In the nineteenth century, most Christians remained silent about the horrors of slavery. In the twentieth century most Christians remained silent about the horrors of Nazism. In the twenty-first century most Christians remain silent about the horrors of abortion.
There is blood on the hands of the Christian church. We have remained silent when we should have spoken out. We have looked the other way when we should have paid attention to the sins of the land. We have surrounded ourselves with comfort and ease, when we should have lived a Christlike sacrificial life.
And there are wolves amongst the flock spreading lies and deception, yet the church has allowed these false brethren in, and even welcomed them. Jesus made this crystal clear when he said in Matthew 7:21-23:
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
Those are terribly strong words, but they are necessary words. There are all sorts of people running around claiming to be Christians who are clearly no such thing. Jesus said in the verses immediately preceding this passage that we are to judge a person by his fruit (Matt. 7:15-20).
On the issue of abortion it seems we have a lot of rotten fruit-bearers. Those claiming to be followers of Jesus who militantly support the killing of the unborn are a key example of this I would think. And consider one blatant case: American president Barack Obama.
While he likes to tell us he is a Christian, this simply does not square with the fact that he has been the most pro-abortion president in US history. He has declared war on the unborn, and has consistently worked for pro-death legislation.
Consider what he has just said as the US marked the 39th anniversary of its infamous abortion decision, Roe v Wade. He called it a “historic anniversary”, and actually said this: “we must also continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams”.
There you have it folks: for Obama, abortion helps daughters “fulfill their dreams”. Incredible. Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing. What about the dreams of the daughters in the womb? What about their future? What about their constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
For Obama the charlatan, it seems that the feminist gospel is all that matters – as long as women can pursue a career and the like, that is all that matters. Who cares how many babies are slaughtered along the way? That does not mean anything to the current president.
One person who is a real Christian and who refuses to remain silent about abortion is Kelly Clinger, a former backup singer for pop star Britney Spears, who had two abortions when she was in her early twenties. She is now very outspoken about the evils of abortion and the need to smash the wall of silence on this.
She has just recently written a moving piece about returning to an abortion mill where she had her own baby killed some 12 years ago. I offer part of her story here:
“As I pulled into a parking spot, I sat in the car for a minute and closed my eyes. I wanted to pray that I wouldn’t fall apart; but before I could utter a word, a movie began playing in my head. I could see that hurting, desperate 23-year-old girl who pulled into this very same parking spot in 2000. And suddenly I remembered it all:
“Every room in that building. The faces of the nurses. The pictures of angel’s wings on the ceiling. I remembered tripping on my way to the car because I was drugged and crying uncontrollably. I even remembered the abortionist’s hands. Perhaps I was being naïve, but I wasn’t prepared for the flood of emotions that came.
“I also didn’t expect to be overcome with compassion for the mothers and fathers who were arriving one after the other and were convinced that killing their child was their only choice. I could tangibly sense the despair and the hopelessness they felt. I remember it so well.”
She concludes with these powerful words: “As I left, I tried driving through my tears. How do you get past the heaviness that you feel for the babies and for the women who will suffer depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts, and lifelong regret?
“However, once I stopped crying, I became very angry…like Jesus-turning-over-tables angry. My friend John, who prays outside of this clinic every day, said that he cannot get one church to support him. He wasn’t even talking about financial support…he was talking about prayer support, sending people to pray, anything. This infuriates me. Honestly, this makes me never want to step foot in a church again.
“There are hundreds of churches within a 15-mile radius of this Orlando abortion clinic. While they are updating their offices, paying for sound systems, and preaching their fluffy messages, babies are dying…over 3000 a day. Friends, hear me, we must shake off our dullness and be SILENT NO MORE…and STAGNANT no more!
“I am angry with pastors who never mention abortion and will not lend a hand to people like my friend, John. I am angry with those who think that writing a check is enough and never think about actually doing anything for the unborn. I am angry with Christians who do nothing to stand for the least of these and still call themselves Christians. GOD HAVE MERCY.”
Enough silence. It stinks to high heaven. Christians in general, and Christian leaders in particular, will give an account of this deadly silence one day. What will they say? What excuses will they make? How will they try to justify their appalling silence in the face of this great moral holocaust which took place all around them?
Will the church of Jesus Christ stand condemned because of its despicable and cowardly silence on the abortion holocaust? Or will it rise up and speak out on the great moral issue of our day? The choice is ours. We must choose quickly, and we must choose wisely.

Week after week that train whistle would blow. We would dread to hear the sound of those old wheels because we knew that the Jews would begin to cry out to us as they passed our church. It was so terribly disturbing! We could do nothing to help these poor miserable people, yet their screams tormented us. We knew exactly at what time that whistle would blow, and we decided the only way to keep from being so disturbed by the cries was to start singing our hymns. By the time that train came rumbling past the church yard, we were singing at the top of our voices. If some of the screams reached our ears, we’d just sing a little louder until we could hear them no more. Years have passed and no one talks about it much anymore, but I still hear that train whistle in my sleep. I can still hear them crying out for help. God forgive all of us who called ourselves Christians, yet did nothing to intervene.

Now, so many years later, I see it happening all over again in America. God forgive you as Americans for you have blocked out the screams of millions of your own children. The holocaust is here. The response is the same as it was in my country – SILENCE!”

As American Christians, we have become so comfortable in our lovely buildings and padded pews. We have beautiful fellowship halls for our many banquets. We have the latest sound equipment for our praise and worship. We have computers to keep our records. We gather together each week and shut ourselves inside our buildings. We raise our voices as loud as we can, all in the name of God.
And yet, in the heavenly realm, our voices raised in praise are drowned out by screams of agony from millions of babies who are being executed before they are born. We can’t see them. We can’t hear them. But it is happening right now!
Babies are being aborted UP UNTIL THE DAY OF BIRTH in this country. Their organs and brains are “harvested” for use in medical experimentation. In Wichita, Kansas, the smoke stack from the furnace of Dr. Tiller’s abortion clinic belches out black smoke and the sickening smell of burning flesh. These are the bodies of 7th, 8th and 9th month old babies being “disposed of”.
If the Christians in the old man’s church had done something, they would have probably been killed. That is not the case with us. We don’t even have that as an excuse for our silence.
Years from now will you be like that old man trying to explain your apathy as millions were led away to slaughter in abortion clinics? Or will you raise your voice and cry out in protest for those who have no voice! The choice is YOURS!

A handful of Right to Life Australia volunteers maintain a presence and reach out and offer help to mothers and their babies on just two mornings a week. They have saved several babies’ lives and stand as a tiny Christian witness to the evil – but are very vulnerable. And to the shame of Protestants, every single volunteer is Catholic.
If Christians won’t do anything to stand up to such evil on their very doorsteps, what hope is there for the church? What power can its preaching possibly have?

Praise God! If we did something, it would be good works, and that would spoil our salvation by grace through faith, which is not of works, lest any one should boast.
Don’t turn the glorious gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ into a social gospel. How can we get to heaven if we are so earthly minded that we get tangled up in the dirty business of justice? That is for the worldly.
Come on folks, turn up the volume of the guitars, hammer on the drums more vigorously, and sing the choruses with much more gusto, then we will be really spiritual, and not have to be troubled with the dirty business of the ways of the world.
And besides, if we noticed the injustice of the world, then we may have to do something about the members of the church who also fornicate and then procure abortions, and that would be so legalistic and judgmental. No one is perfect. We need to be much more tolerant of one another. Besides, God understands. How could we possibly worship a God who would show displeasure at our simply being human?

We as Christians must be involved , otherwise we are not doing that which God has called us to do. The Church I attend has a very small group that is fighting the spectre of euthanasia as this is being debated here in South Australia, with many of our politicians pushing for its legalisation. I am working with them, and also do my best to convince politicians of the evil of abortion, however, most of this falls on deaf ears. At least I can stand in front of the Lord, and say “I did my best – with your help” I just so hate this culture of death we have now in this Country.

I hope you continue to keep us informed of what’s going on. Some of your recent articles have been quiet disturbing into the realities of abortion. I just feel that few care now or worse still don’t think there is anything wrong with it. But it is hard now as I know many people hate us. I had a recent experience with someone online is that Christianity caused as much violence as all other religions and that the Catholic led the way especially with its recent Controversies. He wants all religion banned starting with the Christian Church. There is nothing you can say to them as he believes the church is evil and still is. It is impossible to try and say anything to him. He won’t see any good in Christians. I imagine this is one thing he would argue the Church should stay out of.

With these sorts of people your words often go in one ear and out the other though. Reason cannot convert a person, only the Holy Spirit can! We can only pray that these people will listen to the call of the Spirit.

We need sermons that pierce ‘as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow’, and ‘judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart’. I watched a segment of a powerful sermon on YouTube a couple of years back comparing the blood of aborted babies to the blood of your ‘brother’ crying out from the ground. What a powerful analogy. Yes, we are our brother’s keeper! If we are going to be salt and light, we’ve got to be doing something whether prayer, lobbying or just talking to people around us. It may be a cliche but together we can make a difference.

Thanks Luke, he was a ‘friend’ via my Facebook profile, or what I dub my political one. I won’t get into the details how this began but me and many other people had to block him. Most do not believe in God themselves. His mind is set and yes, only the Holy Spirit can convert him. It is just it is the first time I have encountered such a person who believed that religion should be banned and would start with Christianity. It is impossible to say anything to him.

My wife and I have been visiting the local Protestant churches, letting them know and inviting individuals to help. We haven’t yet found anyone willing to assist, but will keep trying.
I remember speaking with a person from Right to Life some years back regarding the placement of the abortion clinic in Croydon. What he said is revealing. He said words to the effect that the abortion clinic opening in a bible belt area would not have any effect whatsoever on the abortion clinic. And tragically he was right.
I wrote to a local church near the clinic that we once attended. They responded to me but did nothing.
We as Christian’s have to wake up and stand up for the unborn babies. Because if Christian’s don’t, who will.

Bill, when I was much younger I invested an inheritance in producing leaflets and flooded my city with them (never really recovered financially). I wrote letters to the editor, and had them published in the local paper. I joined the Right to Life organisation, and was the only Protestant at the meetings. I helped fund a debate on the campus of the local university, which the media miss reported, and basically presented a lie to the viewers about what was said during the debate. I expended a lot of energy around the baby murder issue, as well as expending energy in addressing lots of other issues that were current at the time. Lost a lot of sleep hearing the cries of the murdered babies, screaming from the grave. Still vividly see the silent scream of the film of the same name. I burnt out. I now have to focus on the specific areas that God has specifically called me to address. I wonder if there are other Christians who have had similar experiences. Anyhow, it is important that we all do as much as we can.

Yes, one thing I’ve had to learn is that Protestant Christians aren’t doing nothing simply because of a lack of knowledge. Most people really don’t want to know, let alone do anything.
This should sadden us, but shouldn’t really surprise us. The Christians who stood up to Nazism and slavery were a tiny minority. Should we really expect it to be any different today?
I think at the heart of the problem is that many Protestants follow their denomination’s traditions rather than Christ himself. I get the feeling that it is their relationship with their church and others that is really important to them rather than their relationship with Christ.
It’s probably much the same story in the Catholic church too. But I don’t have direct experience there.
And you’re quite right. To avoid burnout, we must realise that we can’t do everything ourselves, but must do something, and encourage others to share some of the load.

Yes we know what official Catholic teaching on this is, but that is a very different matter from what most Catholics actually do and believe. It is the same with contraception, with the majority of Catholics simply ignoring and disobeying their own church teaching on this. So it is getting individual parishes, priests and individuals to take a stand on abortion that is the real issue here. Much of the same indifference can be found in Protestant as well circles of course.

Don’t be ridiculous Bill. Church leaders aren’t going to speak out on controversial issues that bring ridicule and condemnation from the media and wider public. They prefer to speak out on things that bring accolades and adoration from the media e.g. social justice, foreign aid, refugees etc. anything that gives them a positive media profile. Dear Bill, To get rid of Barrack Obama the Republicans have nine months to get themselves organised. It seems a great group of the support for the pro-life movement in the U.S.A. is the young people. This is because they realise a quarter of their fellow Americans have been killed through Abortion. They believe they are holocaust survivors. More Church leaders in Australia need to speak out about the evils of abortion.

Thanks Luke, he was a ‘friend’ via my Facebook profile, or what I dub my political one. I won’t get into the details how this began but me and many other people had to block him. Most do not believe in God themselves. His mind is set and yes, only the Holy Spirit can convert him. It is just it is the first time I have encountered such a person who believed that religion should be banned and would start with Christianity. It is impossible to say anything to him.

I remember speaking with a person from Right to Life some years back regarding the placement of the abortion clinic in Croydon. What he said is revealing. He said words to the effect that the abortion clinic opening in a bible belt area would not have any effect whatsoever on the abortion clinic. And tragically he was right.
I wrote to a local church near the clinic that we once attended. They responded to me but did nothing.
We as Christian’s have to wake up and stand up for the unborn babies. Because if Christian’s don’t, who will.

Bill, when I was much younger I invested an inheritance in producing leaflets and flooded my city with them (never really recovered financially). I wrote letters to the editor, and had them published in the local paper. I joined the Right to Life organisation, and was the only Protestant at the meetings. I helped fund a debate on the campus of the local university, which the media miss reported, and basically presented a lie to the viewers about what was said during the debate. I expended a lot of energy around the baby murder issue, as well as expending energy in addressing lots of other issues that were current at the time. Lost a lot of sleep hearing the cries of the murdered babies, screaming from the grave. Still vividly see the silent scream of the film of the same name. I burnt out. I now have to focus on the specific areas that God has specifically called me to address. I wonder if there are other Christians who have had similar experiences. Anyhow, it is important that we all do as much as we can.

Yes, one thing I’ve had to learn is that Protestant Christians aren’t doing nothing simply because of a lack of knowledge. Most people really don’t want to know, let alone do anything.
This should sadden us, but shouldn’t really surprise us. The Christians who stood up to Nazism and slavery were a tiny minority. Should we really expect it to be any different today?
I think at the heart of the problem is that many Protestants follow their denomination’s traditions rather than Christ himself. I get the feeling that it is their relationship with their church and others that is really important to them rather than their relationship with Christ.
It’s probably much the same story in the Catholic church too. But I don’t have direct experience there.
And you’re quite right. To avoid burnout, we must realise that we can’t do everything ourselves, but must do something, and encourage others to share some of the load.

Yes we know what official Catholic teaching on this is, but that is a very different matter from what most Catholics actually do and believe. It is the same with contraception, with the majority of Catholics simply ignoring and disobeying their own church teaching on this. So it is getting individual parishes, priests and individuals to take a stand on abortion that is the real issue here. Much of the same indifference can be found in Protestant as well circles of course.

Don’t be ridiculous Bill. Church leaders aren’t going to speak out on controversial issues that bring ridicule and condemnation from the media and wider public. They prefer to speak out on things that bring accolades and adoration from the media e.g. social justice, foreign aid, refugees etc. anything that gives them a positive media profile. Today a local woman had a letter published condemning an earlier letter of mine questioning the push to have RU486 legalised in the Northern Territory.
Her argument was that, as a man, I had no place to comment on a woman’s right to do to her own body as she wished.
Well, I refute such a comment. It is a man’s duty to defend the weak and defenceless. I would be less than a man to remain silent and continue to allow women and men to murder babies in their mothers’ wombs, without calling them to account for their actions.
A baby is not a part of the woman’s body, it is a separate person whose mother has the privilege of caring for, until the baby can be cared for outside the womb.
Even recent government-sponsored adds talk of a pregnant woman having to think for two; herself and the baby in her womb.
O Lord! How long? How long, Oh Lord?
