The US election is now history, but there is still plenty of discussion about the election of Barack Hussein Obama. His supporters and detractors are still slugging it out. Indeed, in my discussions with other Christians I find a constant – and quite disturbing – theme heard time and time again.
When I tell people why Obama was not my choice and they ask me why, I begin by saying, “Well, he will be our most pro-abortion and pro-homosexual President thus far…” But before I am allowed to finish, these Christians blurt out, “Yes, but…” They then go on to make a whole lot of excuses as to why the abortion issue is not really such a big deal, and that other issues are just as important, if not more important.
When I try to point out that not all issues are morally equal, and try to get them to think about what they are actually saying, they often will quickly throw up their hands and say, “Oh, I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” They certainly don’t want to talk about it. But the truth is, they really don’t want to think about it. They are quite happy to justify their voting for this hyper abortion proponent, yet not even think about the moral and biblical ramifications of it.
Obama and abortion
Lest people question whether Obama is in fact ferociously pro-abortion, let me offer a few details here. I have already documented this in earlier articles, but let me add some more information.
Obama has been consistently pro-death. For example, he has opposed banning partial-birth abortions and he has opposed an Illinois bill recognising the human rights of babies who have been ‘born alive’ after failed abortions.
He supported legislation that would repeal the Hyde Amendment, which protects pro-life citizens from having to pay for abortions that are not necessary to save the life of the mother and are not the result of rape or incest. He also promised that ”the first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act”. FOCA will create a federally guaranteed ”fundamental right” to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. The pro-abortion National Organization for Women has proudly noted that FOCA will “sweep away hundreds of anti-abortion laws [and] policies”.
Obama also voted against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois, which sought to protect babies born alive after “botched” abortions. He said at the time, “I would have voted for the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois had it been worded the same as the federal bill. I think that’s the position the Democrats should take.” There is one minor problem here: Obama had prevented his committee from adding the federal wording to the State legislation.
While Obama opposed Born Alive in committee, he in fact voted “present” – neither “yes” nor “no,” but merely “present” – on the state Senate floor. During the primaries campaign Hillary Clinton said this was one of many “present” votes that Obama made, indicating that Obama lacked leadership skills.
Obama also opposed the ban on partial-birth abortions when he served in the Illinois legislature, something which even many ”pro-choice” legislators would not do. And he condemned the Supreme Court decision that upheld legislation banning these late-term abortions.
Obama told Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, this on July 17, 2007: “We know that a woman’s right to make a decision about how many children to have and when – without government interference – is one of the most fundamental freedoms we have in this country.” I would have thought that the most fundamental human right is the right to be alive.
He also said this in his speech: “I have worked on these issues for decades now. I put Roe at the center of my lesson plan on reproductive freedom when I taught constitutional law – not simply as a case about privacy but as part of the broader struggle for women’s equality. Steve and Pam will tell you that we fought together in the Illinois state Senate against restrictive choice legislation – laws just like the federal [partial-birth] abortion ban that are cropping up. I’ve stood up for the freedom of choice in the United States Senate and I stand by my votes against the confirmation of Judge Roberts and Samuel Alito.”
And since his November election win Obama has wasted no time in naming pro-abortionists to work with him. For example, within 24 hours of being elected, he offered the White House chief of staff position to Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, who has a 100 percent pro-death voting record.
Kathleen Gilbert on LifeSiteNews (on Nov. 25) offered a list of other “Obama appointments so far who have a track record of opposing the pro-life movement and actively promoting the anti-life cause”:
“-Commerce Secretary: Bill Richardson – The governor of New Mexico calls himself a ‘Catholic’ and says he is personally opposed to abortion; yet the Democrat has worked against true marriage and pushes so vehemently for unrestricted ‘reproductive rights’ he was named a ‘Champion of Choice’ by NARAL in January of 2007.
-Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS): Tom Daschle – Daschle gained notoriety for his consistently pro-abortion voting record in his years as Democratic Senate majority leader. Daschle blocked votes on five major pro-life bills that passed the U.S. House, and in 2002 wrote a letter to his constituents asking for donations to NARAL.
-(One bioethicist who will likely join the ranks of the new HHS committee, along with Daschle, is Dr. R. Alta Charo, an avid supporter of embryonic stem-cell research who has called pro-life bioethicists leaders of ‘the endarkenment.’)
-Secretary of Homeland Security: Janet Napolitano – The Arizona governor is a well-known abortion supporter who vetoed a partial birth abortion ban, and in 2005 earned praise from NARAL for forcing Arizona pharmacies to distribute the morning-after pill despite moral objections.
-Communications Director: Ellen Moran – Moran is the current executive director of EMILY’s List, a major political action committee dedicated to helping elect solidly pro-abortion Democratic women to political office. She supports tax-payer funded abortions, and opposes any bans on partial birth abortion.”
And don’t forget Obama’s new Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who of course has been a long-standing pro-abortion crusader.
Also of major concern is the fact that Obama will be able to appoint pro-death Supreme Court judges who will remain in power long after he leaves. The decisions of a few Supreme Court judges will determine the direction of the life-issues in America for many decades to come.
Yes, but…
So when I point out to fellow Christians these facts, I still hear from many these words: “Yes, but…” They respond with remarks such as: “Yes, but these are not the only issues that are important.” “Yes, but he is working for unity and harmony.” “Yes, but, he is good on social justice issues, etc.”
My Christian friends who make these claims – and there are many of them – really seem to think that the killing of unborn babies is just one of a number of social issues – no better or no worse than say, tax cuts or social security reform.
But can I suggest that this is not just another social issue. It seems to me it is a fundamental and absolutely crucial issue, which we cannot take lightly. We can go easy on such issues as road infrastructure or changes to trade policy. But we cannot go easy on such a basic human rights issue as the right to life.
But since so many believers do not seem to get this very crucial distinction, let me try using an analogy – albeit an imperfect one – to help illustrate my point.
Suppose two Christians in the 1930’s were debating the recent election of Adolf Hitler in Germany. One Christian says, “How in the world as a Christian could you have voted for this guy? He is intent on murdering whole classes of people, simply because he does not consider them to be human beings.”
But the other Christian limply responds, “Yes, but there are other issues. We can’t just focus on that one narrow issue. Think of all the important social justice issues he is running on. He will be restoring law and order. He will bring unity and cohesion. He will make Germany once again a strong and proud nation. So don’t just pick on this one little issue.”
Hopefully most Christians would see – at least now, with hindsight – that such a response is just not acceptable. The Holocaust may have been just one issue among many for Hitler, but it was an enormously significant issue. All other issues fade in comparison.
I would think that a similar situation exists here. Obama wants to do all he can to promote abortion as a fundamental woman’s right. Of course that means he wants to deny every individual the fundamental right of simply being alive. He in effect wants to wipe out a whole class of people because he does not consider them to be human beings. Sound familiar?
It seems all the promises of Obama – whether bringing the troops home, fixing the economy, or restoring harmony and justice to Americans – means absolutely zippo to those whose innocent lives are snuffed out before they even get to enter the world.
Sorry, but I just do not buy this “Yes, but…” baloney. It is a copout and a sign that moral, biblical and intellectual vigour is not always a high point of many Christians. If we cannot even get this most fundamental and basic of moral and conceptual truths right, then we are a very messed up people indeed.
As in an ealier response to the same subject, Bill, what we are seeing is reheasal for 2 Thess. 2:11-12, the great delusion where men would rather believe a lie. In 2 Tim 4: 3-4, Paul also said would befall the church.
We need men like you to tell it as it is, as did Jeremiah, but mankind will mock and ridicule you as they did him, as they prepare the hearts for the coming of the Lawless One.

I have had more than a couple of people give me that ‘abortion is just a single issue’ baloney and I invented an analogy to help them understand (perhaps) that it is not quite as simple as that to dismiss.
Suppose you are having a really fruitful conversation with 2 friends about some important issues – affordable housing, looking after the poor, education standards, etc. Over on the other side of the room another friend suddenly gets attacked by an intruder who seems to only have interest is clobbing your mate to death with a baseball bat. One of your two friends breaks off the discussion, rushes to intervene and help the victim and shouts at you to help also as the attacker is quite powerful and violent. But in response, you instead turn to him and say, “Do you mind? We were having a very important discussion here. We seem to be on the brink of some marvellous breakthroughs on a wide range of very important issues and you want to ignore them to focus on just this one. How narrow-minded of you.”
About 800,000 people get killed by abortion globally each week. That’s more than a WWII Holocaust every two months. ‘Single Issue’? Try telling that to someone in an emergency, or better still, try telling that to God.
Bill and Mark, you both have very good analogies – nothing much imperfect about them. Not only is abortion ‘orders of magnitude’ more important than the other issues usually mentioned by Obama supporters, but even if we grant all the issues the moral equivalency his supporters claim, then I still see not one policy where Obama could be said to have a more biblical position than his conservative opponents.
His economic, welfare, and health care policies are based on socialism which is an unbiblical pattern for government. His environmental policies are based upon myth and his ‘remedies’ to global warming are just more socialism. His foreign policies are more likely to lean towards appeasement of Islamic hegemony and terrorism, and an abandonment of support for Israel.
So the Christians who support Obama are not just messed up over the significance of abortion, but about all the other major political issues as well.

I would think it is crystal clear to a Muslim fundamentalist as to what Obama is up to. By giving the populace want they want he can cause America to wither through population-reducing abortion and implode by encouraging the natural sterility of homosexuality. Easy to destroy America from the inside out. Just let them destroy themselves.
Meantime, Muslims will procreate and gain a numbers foothold aided by the tolerant laws of the land. From there, they have access to the hearts of the people who feel a spiritual void and their strict rules sound reassuring and secure. Mind you, two of their rules are “no homosexuality” and “no abortion.” And there you have the two-faced approach.
But I still look to a praying church to make a difference in the seeming inevitability. We need to pray for the church to wake up to its warfare in prayer in the heavenly sphere. This was always meant to be our sphere of warfare. And of course, our democratic voice.

It’s appalling but no real surprise to learn that Cizik voted for Obama. When Cizik was out here in early November he did an interview with ABC radio’s AM program in which he said that climate-change was a “moral and spiritual issue”. But worse was what he said about Obama and also Kevin Rudd. Here are a few choice quotes:
“…..we happen to think that Barack Obama exhibited the kinds of values that we personally think are important…..he was the candidate that reflected most of our values in so many different ways…..”
“[Rudd] is the kind of leader that Barack Obama is, and we applaud his stand for action on climate-change, and we want evangelicals here in Australia as well as evangelicals in America to support Barack and Kevin Rudd. They’re a new generation, it’s exciting. I’m proud of what Australians have done and, frankly, I’m a little proud too of what Americans have done.”
In context, I believe when Cizik refers to being “proud” of what Australians and Americans have done, he was referring to the election of Rudd and Obama respectively. The whole 12 minute interview can be heard here. There is no transcript because only a few parts of this interview were chosen to be broadcast in the AM story.

There are other reasons that show abortion to be more important than other social justice issues.
Firstly, it is God’s delight to create! When God creates a human at conception, His desire is to have fellowship with person. He sees that one as another potential sharer of His nature and purveyor of His purposes. For another to take this life away hurts the heart of God, because He can no longer carry our His plan for that child.
Secondly, there is the dehumanising effect on those involved in the killing. Why should we wonder why depression, drug-taking, binge-drinking and suicide are increasing when we know from an increasing number of studies that abortion has this effect on the people involved? The more abortions, the more these spiritual diseases consume us! We need to embrace ‘do not kill’ with more than a nod and a wink!
Thirdly, being involved in abortion makes it hard for people to maintain stable social relationships. The knowledge that one has contributed to the death of another – innocent – human being brings the guilt that drives away trust and love – the essential qualities for successful human relationships. Repress it if we will, guilt still doesn’t make for successful relationships.
In ‘Mere Christianity’, CS Lewis uses the analogy of a fleet of ships to explain why we need an ultimate purpose for our lives; a life-enhancing personal morality; and good social relationships before we can successfully navigate the voyage of our lives. We must have all these functioning for that to happen: involvement in abortion trashes it in all three analogies.

People will look back historically in unbelief that abortion was so generally accepted like they do about slavery. Some of you may have heard today’s news. Given his not-very-biblical views, Cizik has lost his position with the National Association of Evangelicals. The NAE said in part:
“Richard Cizik has resigned as Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE). His resignation, which takes effect today, concludes 28 years of service and leadership in the Washington, DC office of NAE.”
“Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals, explained in a letter to the members of the board of directors of NAE that ‘in a December 2, 2008 broadcast interview on National Public Radio, Richard responded to questions and made statements that did not appropriately represent the values and convictions of NAE and our constituents. Although he has subsequently expressed regret, apologized and affirmed our values there is a loss of trust in his credibility as a spokesperson among leaders and constituents’.”
“Anderson also wrote that “because Richard traveled to a previously scheduled international conference in Europe shortly after the airing of the broadcast it was not possible to meet with him until his return. He and I have recently met together and mutually concluded that his resignation is a difficult but appropriate decision.”
“A December 5, 2008 letter to the board had already reaffirmed that ‘our NAE stand on marriage, abortion and other biblical values is long, clear and unchanged’.”
What will it take for certain Labor-shilling “christian” lobbyists to wake up to the Christophobia of the current State and Federal Labor governments? “Nowhere is there any of the pre-election rhetoric about ‘dialogue’ or ‘lowering’ the number of abortions.
Hudson says the proposals would entrench the unlimited abortion policies that currently guide the U.S.
“Taken together, the proposed policies would accomplish three things: 1) treat abortion as a health care right, 2) provide funding for abortions by insurance carriers or the government, and 3) put judges and political appointees in place who will protect the abortion and government-funding from future challenges,” he explained.
Hudson also noticed that the pro-abortion policies are couched in less offensive terms — relying primarily on phrases like the “health care needs of women” and “reproductive health services.”
Catholic League president Bill Donohue also commented on the memo and said the proposals in it are anti-Christian.
He points out that, in a section on comprehensive sex education, the groups want Obama to revoke funding for faith-based groups and promote only classes and programs that “do not teach or promote religion.”
“It also launches a preemptive strike against a yet to be released regulation from the Department of Health and Human Services protecting the religious rights of health care workers. The document recommends that Obama rescind the regulation,” Donohue told LifeNews.com.
That refers to a soon-to-be-released HHS regulation revoking taxpayer funding from any state or local government or medical center that forces its staff to participate in abortions.
“Evidently, their passion for abortion rights is so extreme that it eclipses any interest in the religious liberty rights of others,” he said.
“And what are most Afro-Americans saying? ‘Yes We Can! Yes We Can! Yes We Can!’ They are ignoring conscience. They are ignoring The Dream! ‘I have a Dream, that one day, my four little children, will live in a world where that they won’t be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character ….’
“Yes, I believe it would be wonderful to have a Black man as president, but it’s more important for there to be, God’s man as president, and that his character would reflect my values; values reflected in the 10 Commandments and our Declaration of Independence. There are other reasons that show abortion to be more important than other social justice issues.
Firstly, it is God’s delight to create! When God creates a human at conception, His desire is to have fellowship with person. He sees that one as another potential sharer of His nature and purveyor of His purposes. For another to take this life away hurts the heart of God, because He can no longer carry our His plan for that child.
Secondly, there is the dehumanising effect on those involved in the killing. Why should we wonder why depression, drug-taking, binge-drinking and suicide are increasing when we know from an increasing number of studies that abortion has this effect on the people involved? The more abortions, the more these spiritual diseases consume us! We need to embrace ‘do not kill’ with more than a nod and a wink!
Thirdly, being involved in abortion makes it hard for people to maintain stable social relationships. The knowledge that one has contributed to the death of another – innocent – human being brings the guilt that drives away trust and love – the essential qualities for successful human relationships. Repress it if we will, guilt still doesn’t make for successful relationships.
In ‘Mere Christianity’, CS Lewis uses the analogy of a fleet of ships to explain why we need an ultimate purpose for our lives; a life-enhancing personal morality; and good social relationships before we can successfully navigate the voyage of our lives. We must have all these functioning for that to happen: involvement in abortion trashes it in all three analogies.

The slaughter, torture and death of the unborn precious millions and the nearly born ( Obamacide ) is the defining moral and ethical issue of the last three decades. People will look back historically in unbelief that abortion was so generally accepted like they do about slavery. I despair that church leaders never mention this shame on our entire society and continue this unholy sham of moral equivalency. There is no equivalent to the deliberate murder of an innocent life. Some of you may have heard today’s news. Given his not-very-biblical views, Cizik has lost his position with the National Association of Evangelicals. The NAE said in part:
“Richard Cizik has resigned as Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE). His resignation, which takes effect today, concludes 28 years of service and leadership in the Washington, DC office of NAE.”
“Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals, explained in a letter to the members of the board of directors of NAE that ‘in a December 2, 2008 broadcast interview on National Public Radio, Richard responded to questions and made statements that did not appropriately represent the values and convictions of NAE and our constituents. Although he has subsequently expressed regret, apologized and affirmed our values there is a loss of trust in his credibility as a spokesperson among leaders and constituents’.”
“Anderson also wrote that “because Richard traveled to a previously scheduled international conference in Europe shortly after the airing of the broadcast it was not possible to meet with him until his return. He and I have recently met together and mutually concluded that his resignation is a difficult but appropriate decision.”
“A December 5, 2008 letter to the board had already reaffirmed that ‘our NAE stand on marriage, abortion and other biblical values is long, clear and unchanged’.”
