When Freedom Disappears

The problem with any slow and gradual process – whatever it may be – is that many will not even realise that it is occurring. We are certainly seeing this in the political and social arenas. All around the Western world we are slowly and gradually losing our freedoms and witnessing our very democracies being destroyed.

But because it is occurring incrementally, it seems that many folks are not even aware of it. Presumably there would be a great outcry if a Western leader – or an overseas tyrant – overnight clamped down on most of our freedoms and decimated our democracies.

Yet this is exactly what is happening, but being a slow and behind the scenes process, few are aware of it, and few seem to be concerned about it. We are living through our own execution, in other words, but hardly anyone seems to even notice. Let me give you one clear example of this.

courtLast night I attended a meeting about marriage, family and faith. The keynote speaker was the greatest tennis player the world has ever seen. No one has achieved on the tennis court what this woman has. And yet, the meeting had to be a secret meeting, not advertised to the general public.

How in the world could this situation come about? Why hide a meeting about something most people fully support, and keep things hushed up about this terrific, world-renowned woman? I will tell you why. Because the militant homosexual lobby has declared war on democracy and freedom.

It will not tolerate anyone who dares to stand against their destructive agenda. Thus in the name of tolerance they will shout down and shut down any public gathering which stands up for truth, for faith, and for family. This meeting had to be held in secret simply so that it could go ahead.

Just think of the early church where believers had to gather secretly in the catacombs and elsewhere because of the great persecution and opposition they were experiencing. But now we are returning to exactly those same sorts of scenarios. Now Christians and pro-family folk have to meet secretly in order to hold their meetings.

The reason for this need for secrecy is quite evident, and we saw a clear example of this just a few weeks ago. Last month I shared the stage with the amazing woman: Margaret Court. She and I and a Jewish rabbi spoke to over 500 people at her own church.

Yet I had to run the gauntlet. The militant rent-a-crowd was there: small in number as always, but very vocal and determined to inflict maximum damage. So around 50 obnoxious and noisy protestors were there to disrupt the meeting and further undermine our democratic rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech.

The only reason that the meeting in fact took place was because we had to spend a lot of money on getting a heavy presence of security guards, along with police. They even had the riot squad on standby! All this simply so that a Christian pastor and former tennis great could hold a public meeting on the importance of marriage and the wellbeing of children. I wrote about this experience here: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2012/04/25/shouting-down-the-opposition/

Do you see what is happening here? Freedoms are being lost, and democracy is being dragged in the mud. The activists – all in the name of tolerance and acceptance – are going around the West on search and destroy missions. Anyone who dares to take a differing view from them must be hunted down and totally silenced.

No wonder they are known as the gaystapo, or the pink mafia. For that is exactly what they are – they are homosexual fascists who have declared war on freedom and democracy. So now Christians and pro-family folks have to hold clandestine meetings simply so they can continue without fear of being shut down.

That is not how a democracy is supposed to operate. That is not what freedom is all about. This is not why our sons went overseas and shed their blood – so that the homosexual jackboots could intimidate, bully and threaten anyone who happens to think marriage is between a man and a woman, and that children deserve having their own mother and father.

A distinguished and honourable Christian gentleman from Melbourne just yesterday was hounded out of his position for simply daring to affirm these two truths. To even speak up for traditional marriage and the wellbeing of children today is very costly indeed.

This great man of courage and principle has paid a very heavy price, and more nasty ramifications of his brave stance may yet be forthcoming. I have written about this Christian hero here: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2012/05/15/equal-opportunities-are-only-for-some/

All over the Western world brave men and women like this who simply wish to voice their concerns about the wellbeing of children and the state of the nation are being bullied and attacked by the pink mobsters, and many are having to pay quite a big price for this.

And we are all paying a heavy price: the steady erosion of our freedoms is one obvious thing we are all paying. Freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of conscience are all under direct assault by the militants. And democracy itself is unravelling at the seams, as these roving gangs from the tolerance brigade seek to bust up meeting after meeting.

Oh, and I should mention that these bullies have already stated that they will attack Margaret Court once again when she speaks – or tries to speak – in Tasmania tomorrow night. Please keep this meeting in your prayers. And this used to be a free country. This used to be a great democracy. Well not any more, not with roving gangs of the intolerance police making sure they replicate what the Nazis used to do.

Our freedoms are going down the gurgler fast. Does anyone care? Will anyone stand up against the new bullies and brownshirts? Or will we simply stand by and allow all of our freedoms to eventually be stamped out under the jackboots of the peace and love brigade? The choice is ours.

  1. Keep going, Bill. I regularly copy your link and insert it on my page in Facebook. The message is crossing the ocean.

  2. We are losing this game of chess and most people would know, you can’t win the game playing defensive. To win you must attack. So we’re on our back foot, all the time waiting for the next Blow. Their attacking, marching forward and were walking backwards able to deflect some blows.
I thank God for the heroes we do have and I do my bit but it just doesn’t seem enough. It’s almost like a dark cloud is forming above Australia but it’s not a cloud it’s demonic.
It’s all happened before as Wilberforce or Luther or Lincoln and many many others have shown us.
Oh well I guess I’ll Pray.

  3. Another first rate survey of the problem we are facing, and thanks again for the perceptive comments Bill.
As we know there is nothing new in all this. In fact it goes right back to the persecution of Christians in the early years of the church where the Gospel was preached.
Go to Acts 17:5, and again 17:13, amongst others, to see how the Jews so hated the message and messengers that they organised the “heavy mob” to shut them out.

It is right to point out that this, and the courageous Margaret Court experiences illustrate that same hatred.
In the more recent past, the use of the violent and intimidating mob was a stock in trade of the Nazi’s whenever their political opponents organised meetings.
They were systematically disrupted, broken up, and brutal violence quickly intimidated all opposition.
The end result? No more open opposition.
The next step was more overt and dangerous – the notorious “Kristallnacht”, (Glass night) when Jewish shops and other premises were attacked and destroyed overnight in Germany.

We need to point out to non Christians too that it is not only the rights of believers to freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, and of association, which are at stake here, but also that of ALL democratic rights and freedoms, secular or religious, which are under threat at the same time.
This is understood by some, but not by many.
It is interesting that in the UK it is the National Secular Society which has now joined forces with the Christian Institute (temporarily) in order to protect such basic freedoms to overthrow a crucial clause in the Public Order Act on the application of just one word – “insulting”, which has been frequently used to justify the suppression of free speech, and including the arrest of Christians who have criticised the “gay” agenda.
Does anybody care? you rightly ask Bill. A few do, but a tiny minority in comparsion to the massed forces of the militant “gaystapo”, organised, resourced, and clearly “on a mission” world-wide.

As you suggest, it is the blind complacency of multitudes of Christians which is disturbing. It is but a short step from ‘banning’ free speech in the public square, to the church round the corner and banning it there too.

For those who may be only dimly aware of the crucial nature of this battle – please read “The Marketing Of Evil” by David Kapelian for an overview of the strategies and tactics involved in the open warfare being waged against heterosexual marriage, and the institution of the God given family. We STILL need to effectively pray and every day, as we are bidden, “Deliver us from evil”, but also very actively involved wherever we can, as never before.
    Keep reminding us Bill !

  4. We are living in exciting times. Don’t forget that in the pagan societies that many fist preached the Gospel to are in a very similar situation we are facing right now. The Gospel was able to spread into those cultures then and it will do the same now. One thing this is going to do is force people to take sides. Are they going to go with the homosexual movement, or stick with the Bible? This issue is most definitely divisive and it should set out those who are true believers or just in name also.
    Ian Nairn

  5. Yes Ian, this increasing persecution will separate the men from the boys, the wheat from the chaff – so that at least is a good thing.

    Bill Muehlenberg, CultureWatch

  6. I agree Bill and Ian. This issue certainly reveals men’s true hearts towards God and their biblical convictions (or lack of).
It is very saddening though, to find out that people you assume are strong Christians, people of high standing in churches or organizations, are actually wolves in sheep’s clothing or some of them just cowards.
It is breaking my heart to see ministers, Christian school teachers, principals, Christian Schools Australia, and even the head of World Vision in Australia and all the other Christian founded charities, be so cowardly on this issue.
    Annette Williams

  7. Thanks again, Bill.
I heard on the radio this morning that today is “Homophobia Awareness Day”, and that today in particular we must be vigilant against all forms of homophobia.

I am aware of this term being bandied around, but I am not at all sure that it has any real meaning, except as a term of abuse, a smack down word, for which it serves very well.
I have heard of acrophobia (fear of heights), pyrophobia (fear of fire), claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces), aquaphobia (fear of water), and hydrophobia (rabies) – all recognised mental or physical disorders for which there are various treatments. But “homophobia”? Is there a course of treatment for this dreaded disease? Is there a pill or a potion, a laxative or enema that will rid me of this appalling complaint?
No? Oh, it’s a morally reprehensible stance and disposition. Sorry, it sounded like a medical condition! Come clean, you advocates of perversion! Is it a medical condition? Then cut all this ‘blame’ terminology, and have some pity on the unfortunate sufferers of this seemingly incurable disease.
Is it a moral position, worthy of condemnation? Then stop making it sound like a medical condition!
So which is it: medical or moral? Make up your minds!

One other thing: these deviants will doubtless accuse me of “hate speech”. Well, how about that! Take it on the chin like the rest of us Christians, and especially Bill, have to do on a daily basis! Stop going, schoolboy style, to politicians, legal eagles, journalists, and like-minded interest groups with a “boo-hoo” story. I’m fed up, and so are many others on this blog.

They will accuse me of making light of a serious problem, as I have above. Yes it’s a serious problem; the homosexual lifestyle and legal approval thereof is bringing Divine wrath upon our communal heads, just as many of the civilisations of antiquity fell because of the same deviancy. But as Elijah ridiculed the prophets of Baal and their profligate deity, so I will ridicule the allegedly equivalent lifestyle of homosexuality and the mealy-mouthed defences made for it. If that makes the objectionists who come on to this board very sensitive and uncomfortable, that’s tough.

  8. Daniel, I agree, we must attack, but not like the world, but like Jesus and those earlier disciples that followed Him so closely.
How did they attack? By speaking the truth unflinchingly and by suffering. I was astounded to read in Eric Metaxas’s book on Bonhoeffer how the carefully planned bomb attack on Hitler failed. These were God-fearing, very concerned Christians who were involved in the attack and I don’t judge them, I would probably have been one of them or at least I hope so, had I been around back then. But it just made me think and wonder if God did sanction doing a good thing, but not in His way. Corrie Ten Boom was given the opportunity to assassinate Nazi perpetrators by a sympathetic Dutch policeman and she refused. She suffered though. Some people seem to think that at some stage our verbal and moral offensive can turn into physical violence and would be justified. I am just not sure and thankfully have not been put into a position where I have to definitely decide one way or another.
Any thoughts on that? Bill, you have probably dealt with this in one of your articles, I just can’t recall.
I am just wondering if now is not the time to understand God’s will in this and decide, for the war is coming closer and more personal, as your article shows.
    Many blessings

  9. I sometimes felt that I was too politically outspoken and as a Christian I should be milder and more withdrawn from the issues.
But you have shown me by your stance how important to address the immorality that is allowed full sway across our land. We have to be loud to be heard, if we are quiet no one hears. Before I was a Christian I thought on the other side, when I became a Christian I saw on the right side, therefore freeing me to be a real person. We have to think of the children, who are 2nd class citizens in all this.
    Fay Allinson

  10. Many thanks Fay. We all must do our bit as God leads, but I am sure we can use a lot more Christians who are willing to speak out and take a stand. Even getting believers to pray about these things is tough going. It is interesting that just moments ago I was reading Ezekiel 22:30: I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.

    Bless you,

  11. Hi Bill,
I just came across these verses this morning (Gal. 6:7-9 NIV). Let us be encouraged!

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature [Or his flesh, from the flesh] will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

    Joost Gemeren

  12. Ursula yes attack like Jesus and the disciples, we have that example to follow. But here is my dilemma. Just how much of a bible believing Christian am i? Sure I think I am but now as Bill’s pointing out and it is completely obvious the stage the world is in, will I crumble into violence or will I turn the other cheek? I’m trying to be very honest with myself or rather feel convicted to be harshly honest with myself. Besides these attacks don’t come in the form of do or die, they come slowly with a cleverly arranged platform, Political correctness.
    Daniel Kempton

  13. When people say that our fight is not with flesh and blood but with the heavenly forces, I believe they misunderstand this to mean that we should confine our fighting to prayer and speaking the truth. However, this to me is a kind of dualism Christ never told soldiers to cease from soldiering or those who kept law and order to put away their arms. I believe that if all else fails to halt the beast, then physical violence is our only option. After all Hitler would have won if the allies had not bombed the hell out of him.

Trust in God, but keep your powder dry.

    David Skinner, UK

  14. Thanks Bill but you finish by saying, “What about Christians and violence? What about Christians and revolution? Can there be a just revolution? Such important questions are certainly related to what we have considered here, but warrant their own careful exposition. More articles are needed to cover all the territory, so stay tuned.”

    I am tuned in Bill.

    David Skinner, UK

  15. Thanks David

Hey, what can I say? I know, I have been a bit slack. I think I can still fit that one in yet. I am already down to just three nights sleep a month, and two meals. I will just cut out a few more of those non-essential activities, and should be good for another dozen articles or so a month at least! So stay tuned indeed!

  16. In the UK the advertising regulator has launched a threatening interrogation of one of the various publishers of an advertisement which supports the current law on marriage. Also the Law Society has banned a pro-marriage conference from its headquarters citing conflict with their policy of diversity.

We are entering the era of the frightening morons – they don’t do complexities and they haven’t had their dinner!

    Rachel Smith, UK

  17. Joost, thanks for pointing out the verse reminding us to keep going and not give up. I really appreciate it and it is so appropriate. It is easy to lose sight of our final destination and feel that what we see is all there is.

Thanks also Bill for your determination and tenacity, sticking at a task where you get little encouragement and lots of opposition. May God bless you richly for the way you share your insights with us.

May God also bless Margaret Court and those like her who refuse to be intimidated.

    Richard Jardine

  18. I frequently wonder how you manage to write so much so quickly and do all the reading you do. Now I know! More power to your elbow!

The Church has been feminised for a long time and a rebalancing is long overdue. Perhaps the totalitarian gaystapo demand to believe that ‘snow is black and that men can ‘marry’ men’ will wake real men up and stiffen their sinews enough to face the new barbarians down.

    Alan Williams

  19. Dear Bill just a short note to let you know that God sees what you do even when men, and women don’t. I often commend you to the Lord, for you are indeed a faithful and true servant.
I was just wondering if we are considered to be Homophobic. Whatever that might mean? Are THEY Christophobic (Afraid of Christ). Maybe someone should tell them that they have, very good reason to be. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and those who do not have a healthy fear of the Lord are on the highway to destruction.
    Keep up the good work.
    God Bless you and yours.

    Pat Tichey

  20. Hi Bill, first a word for Graham Wood, I know it seems like there are so few who care, but it only takes a few good men and/or women, and I don’t think there are that many of the militant gaystapo, they just make more noise than we do because they have mastered the art of intimidation through the use of so called political process and the manipulation of anti-discrimination laws.

So courage brothers and sisters-in arms, most people I speak with even non-Christians (those who are not homosexual) when made aware of the consequences of homosexual marriage and the agenda of the militants, begin to realize that all is not well on capital hill.

So I for one do not believe the surveys that show a large percent of the population ‘want’ SSM. I believe such surveys to be flawed or worded in favor of the militant homosexuals.

So let us keep up the good fight.

    Fred Merlo
