Countering the Porn Plague: Selected Resources

Pornography is a social tsunami destroying our societies, ruining our marriages, busting up our families, enslaving our men, and killing our kids. I wish I could say this was just happening outside of the churches. But sadly the Christian world is being just as decimated by this problem as anyone else.

It is vital that all Christians take this challenge seriously, and seek to do all they can to keep free of this addictive smut, and help others to do the same. Fortunately there are many good resources out there to help us with this. There are both Christian and non-Christian books and videos available which we all need to make use of.

The following are some of the better resources out there which discuss the porn plague, document its nefarious effects, and provide practical help on getting free and staying free.

Organisations

Also there are ministries devoted to helping those who want to be set free from this. Consider some of the following organisations and their resources:

http://www.pureintimacy.org/
http://just1clickaway.org/
http://www.covenanteyes.com/
http://www.dads.org/strugglewithporn.asp
http://www.purelifeministries.org/

The statistics on porn are roughly as follows: 85 per cent of men struggle with porn, and the other 15 per cent are liars. That is probably pretty close to the truth. In that case we all need help here, and these resources are a good place to begin. And what almost all of them will tell you is that you can’t lick this problem alone.

We need each other to overcome this, and other addictions we struggle with. Get into an accountability group now if you have not already done so. And check out this great Promise Keepers site for more info on accountability groups, and the sorts of questions you should be asking each other:

  1. Hi Bill, are you familiar with the Life Keys Valiant Man program and resources developed by Dr Allan Meyer? Our church has run Valiant Man in our church in conjunction with other local Alice Springs churches for several years now. While it does not eliminate the problem facing all men, including Christians, it does provide insights and practical tools for keeping one’s self pure(r), both physically and mentally.

    Job 31:1-4 (World English Bible):

“I made a covenant with my eyes, how then should I look lustfully at a young woman? For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high? Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity? Doesn’t he see my ways, and number all my steps?”

  3. Have you ever heard of a group in Australia that is fighting a frontline battle against porn and have seen amazing successes. It is known as the Australian Federation for the Family.
    Jack Sonnemann

  4. Thanks Jack. Yes there are a number of great pro-family organisations in Australia fighting the porn issue, including yours. Others include the Australian Family Association, FamilyVoice, Life Ministries, and Salt Shakers. They all offer great resources as well.

  5. Hi Bill, the challenge is as always, changing the public’s perspective and attitude to it. Practically every man I speak to at work considers it quite O.K. to indulge, from watching it on their i phones during meal breaks, to purchasing it from the illegal dvd sellers who come around to the work-sites.

Amazingly they do not even consider the fact that those sad wretched souls (the women) in the industry are not participating because they want to, but rather because of financial need. Even when this fact is pointed out to them, it is scoffed at.

Thank God for the organizations (many listed above) fighting against the porn problems. Sadly it would require an effort from government via media control (mainly internet) to make a real difference, but then of course that would be an impediment to peoples ‘freedom’ of expression and would be seen as being ‘intolerant’. The slippery slope just keeps getting more slippery.

  6. IF only our church leaders would teach the truth AND oppose all forms of sexual immorality, including adultery, homosexuality and pornography.
We don’t justify sin, we don’t live in sin, we don’t look for loop holes contrary to Bible living.
    Judith Bond

  7. Hi Bill (and others),

Are you aware of / familiar with: http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com

I strongly recommend it. It has many courses which present God’s principles to walking in His freedom and vicotry.

Specifically to the problem with lust, sexual addiction, and porn, it has a course called “The Way of Purity”, a 60 lesson course.

    Again, I highly recommend it!

    Blessings,
    Jeremy Hopwood

  8. Bill,

I was also going to recommend settingcaptivesfree.com as a very good Biblical resource for people struggling with temptations but I see that Jeremy beat me to it.

I would recommend them over others you have listed that are less Biblical like xxxchurch.com
