Recommended Reading On the Doctrine of God

To offer in effect a bibliography on God might seem to be a wild and reckless attempt. There is no greater subject in the universe (or outside of it) and there are millions of books written about God. But here of course I am being much more circumspect and am simply offering some good titles on the doctrine of God.

And the God of the Bible is my focus, with the titles here generally reflecting the more or less conservative or evangelical or Reformed position. Thus there are no books here on Allah or Shiva, and the authors here are mainly Protestants.

And I limit things even further, with mainly theological, academic or scholarly works here, as opposed to popular level volumes – although some of those appear here as well. And I break it up into four sections: general volumes about God, his nature, his character and his attributes; books on the doctrine of the Trinity, volumes addressing the issue of God and his relationship to time; and philosophy of religion type volumes. Thus the last two sections are a bit more philosophical or apologetical in nature, for those so inclined.

Many more volumes could have been included here, and undoubtedly you will have your own favourites to add. But these 65 or so volumes should be a good place to begin if you want to learn more about the God we follow. And that you should, since theology is simply the study of God, something which all believers need to be involved in.

Happy reading and a word of advice from C.S. Lewis: “If you do not listen to theology, that will not mean that you have no ideas about God. It will mean that you will have a lot of wrong ones.”
