Marriage Vote: ‘Yes’ Wins

After a long, protracted and often bitter few months of debate, electioneering and controversy, the vote is finally now in: the “Yes” vote has won. The results have just been released, and the percentages are these; 62% yes and 38% no. This is a tremendous disappointment in so many ways.

Of course it is a non-binding vote, but the activists already are pushing their homosexual marriage bills. Many of the bills, such as Liberal senator Dean Smith’s bill, will offer basically no protections at all for religious freedom, freedom of conscience, and freedom of speech for those who still believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

Thankfully Victorian Liberal Senator James Paterson issued a media release on Monday offering an alternative bill that would seek to safeguard many of these various freedoms. It said:

“I’ve long believed that same sex couples deserve the freedom to marry, just like every other Australian. That’s why I was proud to vote ‘Yes’ in the same sex marriage postal survey, and have consistently argued in favour of changing the law since I was first publicly asked about the issue in June 2011.
“I’ve never believed that allowing same sex couples to marry needs to come at the expense of the freedoms of other Australians. I have always argued that parliament is capable of ensuring there are no negative consequences for anyone else from allowing gay Australians to marry. Allowing same sex couples to marry is not mutually exclusive with preserving our freedoms, with the right bill.
“Today I’ve released a draft bill that achieves these two important objectives. It draws on the work of the Senate select committee inquiry into same sex marriage, which I was a member of.

The bill:
-Expands the definition of marriage to include same sex couples, granting them the freedom to marry for the first time in Australia.
-Ensures ministers of religion and celebrants who hold genuine belief in the traditional definition of marriage have a right to refuse to solemnise a same sex wedding.
-Establishes a limited right of conscientious objection, to ensure no one is forced to participate in a same sex wedding against their sincerely held beliefs.
-Protects freedom of speech so that Australians can discuss their view of marriage without fear of legal penalties.
-Enacts a narrow anti-detriment clause that prevents governments and their agencies from taking adverse action against someone with a traditional view of marriage. It does not apply to non-government organisations, businesses, or individuals, preserving freedom of association.
-Guarantees parents’ right to choose their children’s’ education by allowing them to opt-out of classes that conflict with their values.

“These protections are important because it should be possible for Australians with different values to live harmoniously alongside each other. All Australians should be able to live their lives according to their own values. No group should impose their values on another group.
“If the parliament opts for a narrower bill with fewer protections, I fear we will see some Australians seek to impose their values on others, with court cases and other legal mechanisms. No one should want to see the messy court cases that have occurred after same sex marriage was legalised in other countries.
“This bill is not a reason to delay legislating same sex marriage. If a ‘Yes’ result is confirmed this week, this bill could be passed by the parliament as quickly as any other bill. I believe the parliament should do so before Christmas, with additional sitting weeks if necessary.”

This is a big improvement on the various other bills. Of course I must say that I myself can never agree to call a sexual union between two men or two women “marriage”. It is not. It is fake marriage. It is exactly what Abraham Lincoln once talked about: “How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg? Four. Saying that a tail is a leg doesn’t make it a leg.”

No bill has yet been accepted or voted on. So we are simply in the next round of lobbying, debating, making our case, and so on. The days ahead will continue to be intense and hardcore. Now is not the time to give up or go on vacation. Much work still remains to be done.

So the fight continues. But we must acknowledge all those who did so much hard work and so much praying over the past few months. They rightly deserve a mighty round of applause. And while singling out a few names here would be a disservice to all the others, still, let me do so nonetheless.

One public face of the campaign was that of Lyle Shelton of the ACL. Being so public, he received his fair share of abuse. It has not been easy on him and his family during this period. So thank you Lyle. You are a champ, as are so many others.

And on the prayer side of things there would be numerous saints to thank, but let me mention just one. Warwick Marsh of the Fatherhood Foundation has for decades known of the value of prayer and intercession. He has helped to lead the charge here with lengthy periods of prayer and fasting.

In sum, all your efforts were not in vain, and we must continue to stand up for what is right, even if the majority sides against us. When it comes to doing the right thing, one man plus God is still a majority, and we must keep standing strong. Four quotes from Margaret Thatcher may well be of some help here:

“You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.”

“Don’t follow the crowd, let the crowd follow you.”

“I am in politics because of the conflict between good and evil, and I believe that in the end good will triumph.”

“First you win the argument, then you win the vote.”

In this case it seems we did not first win the argument. Politics always flows downstream from the culture. So to have success at the ballot box you must first target the culture. We have much more work to do in this regard. And this can only be done when we commit ourselves to the long haul.

Back in 1996 Robert Bork said some important words about all this, and we must pay careful attention to them:

Elections are important not only because of the policies adopted and laws enacted but as symbolic victories for one set of values or the other. But it is well to remember the limits of politics. The political nation is not the same as the cultural nation; the two have different leaders and very different views of the world. Even when conservative political leaders have the votes, liberal cultural leaders operate and exercise influence where votes do not count. However many political victories conservatives may produce, they cannot attack modern liberalism in its fortresses. If conservatives come to control the White House and both Houses of Congress, there will be very little change in Hollywood, the network evening news, universities, church bureaucracies, the New York Times, or the Washington Post. Institutions that are overwhelmingly left-liberal (89 percent of journalists voted for Bill Clinton in 1992) will continue to misinform the public and distort public discourse. The obscenities of popular entertainment will often be protected by the courts. The tyrannies of political correctness and multiculturalism will not be ejected from the universities by any number of conservative victories at the polls. Modern liberals captured the government and its bureaucracies because they captured the culture. Conservative political victories will always be tenuous and fragile unless conservatives recapture the culture…. This is at bottom a moral and spiritual struggle.

Yes it sure is. In sum, and speaking as a Christian, this is indeed a rather sad day. But it is not the end of all things. It is simply the beginning. The battles will continue, but we all know who ultimately wins the war. So with the view of eternity in mind, we keep on fighting. We must never give up.

We must keep on keeping on, so that we can say with the Apostle Paul:

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

And again: “Fight the good fight of faith.” 1 Timothy 6:12

It was always going to be an uphill battle when media like the ABC simply refused to allow any real debate and have made out for well over a decade now that there are no arguments against the redefinition of marriage. This is a very sad day for our culture when we have become so morally stupid that we can’t tell the difference between a sexually functional relationship and a sexually dysfunctional one. When blood relationships now mean little or nothing. Whether the less than three percent of the population were truly disenfranchised by a correct definition of marriage is debatable but what we have now is very clearly over a third of the population disenfranchised. Not only that but we have all the fundamentals in place for more loss of human rights including the very fundamental parental rights. Whether a reasonable bill to protect human rights is put in place is the battle now but the evidence is that whatever protections are put in place these will be completely unwound by the now completely debauched and corrupted Labor Party.

But the height is not end, it is the level of difficulty that we face.Christ faced his passion- a very diffcult time but his passion death and resurrection were together an almighty victory over sin and Satan.     China – China has had a long history of homosexuality among its people and because of such a long standing practice God judged them and in 1948 they became a communist nation losing their freedoms.

    Japan – Homosexuality flourished among the Japanese culture for centuries. Many Buddhist Monks took male lovers to themselves.

    Celts – Aristotle stated that the Celts were also heavily into homosexuality. The Celts history goes back to about 1200 B.C.

I’ve given it consideration that seeing as the church has the same rate of fornication & divorce as the world…I am not entirely surprised that God has not listened to our prayers – as though throwing our own sin back in our face. The old Rock & the Hard Place: If we judge it, and do not live up to the righteousness we prescribe for others – then He will judge us.

  8. You hit the nail on the Head Bill. Out of all the sins listed, homosexuality takes center stage. What is the one sin which is being focused on and even endorsed by the people of this world? It is homosexuality. On every TV show they slip in a sodomite relationship. The NRL and the AFL now endorse this filthy lifestyle. A politician cannot even take office here in the Australia unless they embrace homosexuality. Homosexual marriage is being accepted in many countries and the rest will follow. They are only 2% of the population and yet they are determining the path for the other 98%. Through all of this, the church has remained absolutely quiet and that is because this sin must continue to bellow forth until the time God has appointed to destroy this world and all that is evil.

  15. It is a bit diffiicult to campaing against it when the media is for it as is most of the parliament. Our thanks to the 35% who voted no. The people who didn’t vote at all have let us down. The Churches were not that forthcoming. I wonder how many “good Catholics” voted for it.

  17. For those writing to their local MP, the parliament cannot use the Dean Smith Bill because it says that celebrants will be presiding over a union of two people to the EXCLUSION OF ALL OTHERS, voluntarily entered into for life.

    ONE. Dennis Altman, a homosexual, and lecturer at Latrobe uni said on a Compass programme discussing SSM that homosexuals do not aspire to monogamy, so there will be no exclusion of all others.

    TWO. Research by homosexuals indicate that 76% of all relationships have others outside of it involved in sexual liaison so again, there will be no exclusion of all others.

    THREE. In a programme shown on SBS about homosexual relationships in the UK, it focussed on two homosexual living together where one of them went to the local homosexual sauna bath every Thursday evening to have sex with as many other men as possible so again, there will be no exclusion of all others.

    FOUR. Again the research shows that the average length of a homosexual relationship is two years so there will not be any entering into marriage for life.

    If they go with the Dean Smith Bill they have to remove this clause and if they don’t they will totally trash the meaning of marriage.

  19. While not unexpected – the media was trumpeting a YES victory the entire campaign, the outcome is still shattering. Think it will take at least a day or two to digest it. In 1933 Germans voted for Hitler, in 2017 Australians voted for homosexual ‘marriage’. Despite the persecution that the former unleashed, Christianity survived. Odds are the latter will unleash persecution, but Christianity will survive. In the East such persecution has allow the church to explode, and at least one Chinese church leader has said that he’s praying that Australia (the West?) will enjoy the same persecution they do i.e. can enjoy the same blessings they do. A lot of us are quite happy with the comfortable arrangement that existed ’til now. The result does rather emphasise the whole alien in an alien land though.

Bill I see a lot of people are feeling sad because of today’s result (yes it is not good) but I take strength from JESUS words which clearly states that in the last days it will be as ‘THE DAYS OF NOAH’ and the coming of the SON OF MAN (JESUS). So I rejoice in his glory and his presence knowing that our saviour and soon coming KING is in full control. We as the body of CHRIST will/should pray for every yes voter and may our GOD bring them to repentance before they see him face to face because the debate and all arguments will stop and fall short at his feet. ‘Every knee will bow and every tongue confess’ willing or unwilling so take heart and look up our redemption draweth very, very nigh.

  22. Folks, it is a sad day in Australia. While most of the media and a significant number of politicians and some of the CEOs support this, the blame needs to be shared amongst the 61.6% of Australians who have chosen this. Here in New Zealand, I recall the politician’s vote was 77 MPs out of 121, or 63.6%.

    I am reminded reminded by the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:13 – 14:

    13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

    It is an uncomfortable fact that many who go by the way that leads to destruction, although I hope that many people see the path to redemption before they die; I hope in this possibility because our Lord didn’t say that many will go to destruction , instead many are going in the way that leads to destruction. A small difference, but one that compliments the command of the Great Commission that Jesus gave. Having said that, verse 14 is alarming in its implications.

  23. Yes God bless you Bill and many others too who have fought strong and hard and have encouraged us all to stand strong too. Yes we must keep fighting as it is not over yet. There have been some supernatural wins for the NO Vote in Parliament over the years, so it can happen again! We must still play our part but it is God’s battle and HE alone will have the last say! This may be a “defeat”, but I am sure He wants to come through with a bigger Victory down the track! So…rejoice and be glad as this is the day that the Lotd has made!! Use every opportunity to give All the Glory to God and thank and praise Him alone in and for ALL circumstances (Eph 5:20). Also use every opportunity to to share the love of Jesus and His saving message with others too. Isaiah 55:12

  24. Yes Bill, in some ways it’s a sad day but I was encouraged to see that nearly 2 out of 5 Australians voted NO. I don’t think that we have that proportion attending church services regularly. Hence I see that Judaeo-Christian values are still influencing millions of Australians.
    The verse that came to me was Mark 13:31 where Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

  25. It is indeed a sad day. I am trying not to feel angry. But all great comments and we will live to fight another day unless Jesus come back. But those of us who been in the trenches so to speak for a long time like you and me are a bit battle weary! I could hardly believe that Anglican priest in Gosford (NSW) getting really excited about the result. And a “lesbian Christian” responding. I suppose she might be same sex attracted but hopefully she is celibate or else she is very confused. As an MP I used to get letters from “homosexual Christians” occasionally attacking me for my well known views. It was always hard to respond. Loving the sinner but hating the sin was the answer but it was not that simple. Anyway my former colleagues and friends Tony Abbott, Kevin Andrews. Eric Abetz and others have responded appropriately and cautiously. Let’s try an be graceful in defeat.

    Yes I feel sick to my stomach, to see our once Christian country go down the gutter, I am finding it hard to come to grips with the fact that so many of “us” have turned our back’s on The Almighty, that we have rejected His laws and made a mockery of our beliefs.
    Looking on the bright side, it would seem as though we now know the wheat from the tares, it will be left to the Reaper to weed out the tares and cast them into the eternal fire.

My husband and i live overseas – have done for 7 years and both of us enrolled to vote as overseas Australians – I was able to vote in the Marriage Vote – but for some unknown reason my husband’s name was removed from the electoral roll – without notification. He only found out after phoning – because of this he was unable to vote.
    I wonder how many other overseas Aussies this happened to, who wanted to vote.
    SHAME on all those supporting SSM as they are condemning the homosexuals & lesbians to an eternity in hell – because they have chosen to substitute the Truth for the LIE of homosexuals and lesbians.

  36. This result is not the outcome of a united country. A one third, two third outcome is very much a divided result, sure 50% plus one is fine when voting for a leader because they can be removed at the next election if that is the desire. But, life changing decisions like redefining marriage are long-lasting. I believe such issues as this, the Canadian split, the republic, or the Scottish exit ought to have a majority of maybe as high as 80% so as to carry the overwhelming feeling of the population. You will notice I did not mention Brexit, after all, if such a bar had been set when the Common Market was introduced the Brexit vote would not have been required a generation later.

I did vote no on the issue-although I did consider abstaining- on a very costly and distracting subject to take the heat off the swamp in Canberra. This issue from go-to-whoa from the very start had extremely biased articles and debates, shunning/shaming people who did not favour of homosexual marriage-yes,that even includes homosexuals who said no.

    The Qld Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003, protects the cuultural heritage of our indigenous population.Principles underlying Act’s main purpose
    “the recognition, protection and conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage should be based on respect for Aboriginal knowledge, culture and traditional practices;
    Other sates have similar laws. UNESCO says something similar.
    Australia is a signatory to the UNESCO convention on the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
    “Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations
    Safeguarding intangible heritage is the protection of cultural identities and therefore the cultural diversity of humankind.  Intangible Heritage includes but not limited to traditional festivals, oral traditions, oral epics, customs, ways of life, traditional crafts, etc.  ”

    Maybe these people have a High Court case if any law on SSM seek to desacralise these beliefs, both as part of the Christian as well as Aboriginal Heritage. Any pro-bono lawyers out there want to run a case?

  39. I see that Magda Subansky uses the throwaway line’ Thank God’. Has she no idea of the insult she is throwing in the face of Almightly God. The first chapter of Romans should be compulsory reading for these Godless hordes who face a frightening future.   40. Thank you Bill for your leadership on this issue. We were in the back blocks of Northern Sulawesi where we have no internet access when we got the news. It was quite a shock that Australia has so decidedly chosen to reject the Biblical and moral foundations of our society. The work of you, Lyle Shelton, Warick Marsh and others is not in vain. The saints need men and women on the front line to lead the charge against sin, wickedness and immorality. May God give you the grace and the strength to continue the battle. There are many who stand with you. Thank you for being one of the leaders of the “small remnant.” Isaiah 1:9 “Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.”

    Shorten knew that irrespective of the result of the SSM survey
    his children are protected from the harmful and diabolical “Safe Schools” Program because “Shorten sends his daughter to a local public school in Melbourne but she is too young to be exposed to Safe Schools until she hits high school. But if she follows her older siblings into independent schools, she, too, is likely to remain blissfully safe from Safe Schools. Do what we say, not what we do, is alive and well among Labor’s elite”.
