The Sexual Revolution: A Readers’ Guide

I just penned a piece on the tumultuous counterculture, 50 years on. I mentioned that a major part of this social upheaval was the sexual revolution. What promised to bring liberation and happiness to many has instead brought slavery and grief to millions. It has caused untold damage, and we are still reeling from its deleterious effects today.

As with any topic of such vast social, moral and cultural impact, there is a large library of books on this. Plenty of them of course are written in defence of the revolution. The volumes here are rightly concerned about it and critical of it. They highlight the dangers and downsides of this 50-year social and sexual experiment.

These volumes – which also go back to a half century ago, and extend right up to today – deal with a wide range of issues concerning the sexual revolution. Thus there are books on pornography, feminism, sex education, the counter culture, marriage and family, and so on.

Many more volumes could have been added here. But these are some of the better books available on these issues. While not all volumes are penned by Christians, probably a majority of these books are. They mostly all come from a conservative perspective, warning about the destruction, dangers and downside of the sexual revolution.

Some topics that arise here require separate bibliographies. So for those interested in learning more about the many volumes on the pornography plague, see here: www.billmuehlenberg.com/2012/06/02/countering-the-porn-plague-selected-resources/

And of course homosexuality requires its own biblio as well, so see here: www.billmuehlenberg.com/2012/06/12/homosexuality-recommended-reading/

Obviously the abortion holocaust is also a direct outcome of the sexual revolution, so see this bibliography: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2011/07/06/recommended-reading-on-abortion/

Those three bibliographies are all a bit dated now, so new updated versions will hopefully soon be forthcoming, just as this is an updated version of a 2012 bibliography. The 74 books featured here are invaluable if we want to understand and respond to the sexual revolution and its massive impact.

It has caused so much damage that a fightback is in order. And be forewarned: to take this on – in any of its forms – will not be taken lightly by the sexual liberationists. They do not like it when we critique their radical revolution. As David French rightly said a few years ago,

“It took me a long time to realize the following truth: No matter how compassionate, charitable, winsome, and kind you are, if you oppose the sexual revolution you are the enemy. And in many ways, you’re not merely the political ‘enemy,’ you’re also a reprehensible human being.”

So here is my list. Happy reading.

  1. We recall the hopelessness of the Hebrew against the overwhelming odds of Egypt. By what power could they hope to be set free? Even Moses indicated it would take a God to free the Hebrew as the power of Egypt was overwhelming.
Today it seems, we face the same question as it appears that every misinformed and ‘I don’t wanna get involved’ have sided with the corrupt so as to retain some semblance of perceived peace.
Throughout Exodus, we see how it was the Hebrew that were constantly put to the test and not Egypt as God unleashed the great plagues upon them to force the hand of Pharaoh so that Israel could choose for themselves right from wrong and who to pay homage to.
Presently, God, I believe, is testing us to see who sides with who and what, and once the great plague is unleashed, the righteous and the corrupt will fall prey equally – ‘sort out the wheat from the chaff’.
We cannot simply say we are Christians for there are responsibilities that go with the title and remaining silent or keeping out of trouble does not match Christian responsibilities.
God has made it clear that adultery and homosexuality must be put to death especially bestiality and LGBTIQ promote every conceivable corruption under the banner of EQUALITY.
To my understanding, we are on the Titanic steaming full speed in a collision course with the deadliest plague in history caused primarily by homosexuality, and moral decadence will fuel the disaster to its bitter end. All the signs are clear for all to see but like Pharaoh, we are too proud or too comfortable to be bothered or to see the dangers.
God will not withdraw the plague as he warned that if we do not carry out his edicts he will turn his face from us – in other words, we are on our own as were the Egyptians.
All that we are asked to do is to remain faithful and do our best as representatives of God on Earth.

  2. Thank you, Bill, for your tireless effort in helping build a Christian worldview in the minds of your readers – including me. Thanks for presenting such a fine resource list on this subject.

Your comments in various articles have inspired me once again to visit the works of Francis Schaeffer, whose work I find is still very relevant for today.

  3. Hi Bill,

Thank you for your latest post and list of recommended reading.

May I suggest the following two important recent books for you to add to your list?

Baskerville, Stephen, The New Politics of Sex: The Sexual Revolution, Civil Liberties, and the Growth of Governmental Power (Kettering, Ohio: Angelico Press, 2017).

Van Maren, Jonathon, The Culture War (Toronto: Life Cycle Books, 2016).

    Best wishes,
    John

  4. Thanks for that John. You just want me to spend more money! I just ordered Baskerville, but Maren was a bit too expensive, so will hold off on that one for now.

  5. Much revolution is, by its dialectic nature, a never-ending process which leaves in its wake an inevitable trail of human tragedy and social, political and spiritual carnage – all in the allegedly hallowed names of Progress and Liberty. Can anyone tell me, which way is “forward”, please, or is it post-modern to say “backwards” is as equally valid as “forwards”?

  6. However we can know the whole gay agenda from A-Z but unless we counteract it, we are just a talking shop. We need some material on how to engage in a kind of martial arts to overpower the enemy with their own strength.
Satire is a good weapon because it affords us some fun. Without wanting to advertise myself, may offer my attempt at debunking the gay gene myth.

  7. Bill I was sent an email regarding this topic about the diabolical research of sexuality by Alfred Kinsey from the Kinsey Institute which is so disturbing and downright pedophilia all in the name of research – to babies and young kids and yet these people get away with it and write books about it. Thank goodness for Luke 17:2
It is called The Kinsey Institute Exposed – a warning to Parents and Governments throughout the world .

  8. Please be aware the Dean Smith bill is worded the marriage of ‘two people’ (not ‘same-sex’) to suit the demands of the BTQIA cohort.
Similarly the all 22 previous unsuccessful ‘Marriage Equaility’ bills were also worded ‘two people’ not ‘same-sex’.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_same-sex_marriage_in_Australia#Federal_law
And yet, Australians were asked (deceptively?) “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?”
Following the “Yes” vote, Australian law will become the marriage of ‘two-people’ – a world first. And if ‘two’ why not ‘three’?

  9. Helen, as you know our governments claim that sodomy has the potential to completely revolutionise, revive and strengthen marriage and thus create, strong, stable and secure societies. David Cameron, former Prime British Minister claimed that sodomy will create a more tolerant, inclusive and non – discriminatory society where everyone can be themselves [1]. Sodomy has the potential to out- produce in creating children and a nation. Away with the “shirt lifters” and “dirty breeders” and in with clean, surgical IVF and surrogacy. After all money can buy anything these days [2]. Sodomy has the potential for prolonging life and to be the cure for all physical, mental and emotional problems. All sexually transmitted diseases will disappear if sodomy is practised world – wide. In addition having a penis thrust up one’s anus will enhance intelligence and sporting performance. World records will tumble as more and more athletes follow this revolutionary practice. Olympic swimmers like Ian Thorpe can claim that having a penis pushed in his anus has changed his life. It has given him increased swimming speed and bankers like Antonio- Simoes of HSBC banking can claim it has increased his intelligence[3] In addition it has given them a peace , love and joy that they never experienced before.
It is extremely difficult to argue against this belief if the lives of Ian and Antonio back up what they claim. But the question we have to ask is how many people do we know personally in our schools, Universities, and the nation who have experienced the same love, peace, joy and increased lane speed and banking performance as a result of having a penis thrust up the rectum? How many nations do we know who became great and prospered as result of worshipping the phallus [4]?
Britain leads the way, smashes the norm, pushes the boundaries, subverts and is by far the greatest nation to showcase to the rest of the World how this sodomite Nirvana can be achieved [5], especially with the Royal Family giving its full support and royal assent [6]

  10. But Helen “B” presumably stands for Bi-sexual, in which it will require 4 people in the marriage to make it complete if each partner is bisexual.

  11. Nice reading list. However, a key book is missing:

‘Sexual Utopia in Power’, from F. Roger Devlin. It is not written from a religious perspective but it is concise and unforgiving.

The problem with the sexual revolution in a nutshell is that it eventually renders civilization impossible. J.D. Unwin, an English anthropologist, noted in his ‘Sex and Culture’ study from 1934 that there was a positive correlation between the cultural achievement of a people and the sexual restraint they observe.
