‘But It’s For Your Own Good’ – On Not Learning the Lessons of History

Yet even more hellishness in Victoria:

One of the many problems with rulers effectively making themselves dictators for life is the masses can end up with sentences of life imprisonment. People suffer immensely when power-drunk rulers so readily love to lord it over others. This continues to be the case in Victoria, with a Premier so addicted to power and control that he keeps insisting that we all must stay under house arrest.

With more Chicken Little gloom and doom fearmongering, and with his newfound emergency powers extending for 6 more months, there may be no end in sight to this – and to Dan Andrews’ thirst for complete control. Victorians are paying a heavy price. Well, some much more than others are, such as sole-traders and small business owners. Those who are public servants on guaranteed incomes will not mind it quite as much.

So here we have even more misery and pain inflicted on the bulk of the people. I sure did not vote for this guy. And no one voted for the Chief Health Officer. These folks have become megalomaniacs who think they are little gods. They expect us all to obediently bow down and embrace their every decree – and even thank them for it!

Indeed, he has so very kindly offered to take an extra hour off our curfew – from 8pm to 9pm. How wonderful of you Premier! You are so generous! Um, when rulers take away our rights and give a few of them back, we no longer have rights – we have permissions.

And never mind the horrific outcomes of all this: the shattered economy, millions unemployed and underemployed – perhaps for life, the shocking rise in mental health problems, depression, drug addiction, suicides, and so on. These seem to mean nothing to our rulers – it is all about dodgy numbers concerning Covid.

And never mind that more and more medical professionals are saying these severe lockdowns are actually doing more harm than good!

Victorian surgeon Dr Geoffrey Wells says a growing number of doctors in the state believe the lock-down is “causing more harm than good”. Mr Wells is one of over 500 doctors in Victoria who have signed a letter to Premier Daniel Andrews concerning the controversial State of Emergency bill which he recently pushed through parliament with crossbench support. He said the doctors were yet to receive a reply from the Andrews government. “What we’re seeing is that the number of referrals from general practitioners to specialists has markedly decreased, it’s probably down about 70 per cent”.

Mr Wells also highlighted a study recently published in the Lancet which concluded there could be an increased death rate of about 4,000 people in the United Kingdom because of the delay in specialist medical support. Because patients are coming to see specialists at a later date, the disease is more likely to have progressed making it in turn more difficult to treat. Mr Wells said he supported a “two-pronged approach” which protected the elderly while acknowledging those in the general community were at far less risk of suffering a fatal outcome from contracting the virus. “If you’re under 65 years of age, then the chance of dying from the virus is markedly decreased, it’s about one in 150,000”. https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6188159219001

Yet so many of our rulers do not seem to give a rip about all this. As Brendan O’Neill put it a few months ago:

But they don’t think about it. Not seriously. They treat it as incidental. The economic devastation being wrought in the US, the UK and elsewhere gets a few column inches here and there or is an afterthought in the nightly news. But it is rarely the story. Lockdown fanatics are so convinced of their moral rectitude, so bound up in anti-Covid zealotry, so enjoying their part in the culture of fear and the culture of condemnation against anyone who breaks lockdown, that they just zone out the terrible things that they are helping to bring about.

Indeed, and all those addicted to power know that to keep the masses enslaved they must first be enslaved in fear and terror. As one law professor has said:

Thomas Jefferson is reported to have said: “When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.” I have investigated and prosecuted dictators and their henchmen for most of my professional life. I have studied their lives, personalities, their rise to power and how they governed once achieving that power. The one common theme in their theories of governance is fear. It is easier to govern and dictate to citizens through fear.

As Hannah Arendt wrote in her book, The Origins of Totalitarianism: “A fundamental difference between modern dictatorships and all other tyrannies of the past is that terror is no longer used as a means to exterminate and frighten opponents, but as an instrument to rule masses of people who are perfectly obedient.” The infamous dictators of the twentieth century, such as Stalin, Hitler, and Mao Tse-tung among others, understood this all too well. Their theory was that a frightened populace will allow their government to take drastic measures to protect them without protest, usually from perceived evil that threatens their society or country externally.

I have had various Jewish friends saying how very concerned they are that what they see unfolding in Victoria is not unlike what took place in Germany in the 1930s. Yes, we must be cautious with analogies, but my point here is not to make an analogy – instead it is to merely point to what the historical record tells us. And history tells us that the masses too often tend to not speak out when they should but just meekly go along with tyranny.

A new book about ten Christians who helped the Jews during the Nazi reign of terror is worth drawing from here. In Defying the Holocaust, Tim Dowley tells their amazing stories, and one cannot help but think of what is taking place in so many parts of the West today.

Let me share some of the story of one of these brave heroes: Mother Maria of Paris:

In March 1942, Adolf Eichmann ordered all Jews aged six and above in German-occupied territories to wear the yellow Star of David on their outer clothing. From 7 June 1942, this order was enforced in occupied France. The same day, Maria wrote a poem entitled ‘Israel’, which opens and closes with the following verses (of which there are several versions):

Two triangles, King David’s star.
No insult, this ancestral blazon.
It indicates a noble way.
It marks a chosen nation.

May you, stamped by this seal,
This star of David, by decree,
In your constrained response reveal
That you are spiritually free.

Many Christians said that Eichmann’s new regulation had nothing to do with them, so did not present a problem. ‘If we were true Christians we would all wear the star,’ Maria responded spiritedly. ‘You are persecuted again, O Israel. But what can human ill-will mean to you, who have heard the thunder from Sinai?”

For the Jews, further restrictions soon followed. From July 1942, Jews were banned from parks, theatres and cinemas, cafés and restaurants, swimming pools, racecourses and campsites, museums and libraries. They could travel only at limited, inconvenient hours and occupy only the last carriage of railway trains. They were not permitted to use the main streets or to leave home after 8 p.m. Jews were barred from almost all public places and could shop for only one hour a day. In effect, they became invisible in public.

Maria was particularly exercised that Jewish children couldn’t spend time in public parks. ‘To forbid little children the sun, the sky and the air! I feel a great anger,’ she told friends, so she took a little group to play in a garden where a retired Jewish man sat smoking his pipe. ‘I can mind the children, Mother,’ he told her. ‘You have more important things to do.’ So he sat with his old raincoat pulled tight to hide his yellow star, until he was arrested the following month.

Wow, so much of that sounds so familiar with what all the inmates in Victoria are now going through – complete with the bans on most activities and even playgrounds, and the 8pm curfews! How can people NOT be concerned about all this?

And I loved what we just read: “I feel a great anger.” We all should! How can we not have righteous indignation welling up within us as we see the devastation and destruction that this government had caused? Andrews says “thousands will die” if these internment camp conditions do not continue.

Oh really? What about the hundreds of Victorians who have already died and will continue to die as a direct result of his utter incompetence in handling this crisis, especially with the disastrous hotel quarantine debacle which led to this second wave and all these deaths.

The simple truth is, instead of 6.4 million Victorians being imprisoned with no end in sight, Andrews is the one who should be in prison for what he has done to this state. Yet so many folks will blindly defend him to the death! How can this be?

Have we really become a nation of sheep, so utterly docile and submissive that we care nothing about the clear destruction of our freedoms, our democratic way of life, and our basic human rights? Do we care nothing of all those resorting to alcohol and drugs and porn to cope with these misguided lockdowns? Do we care nothing about all those who cannot take it anymore and are suiciding?

I care, and I know many others care, and they care greatly. If we all do not learn from history real soon, this will NOT end well. This is clear from the lessons of the past – the lessons too many have failed to learn and to heed.

  1. Many have identified and articulated the problem. Now we need solutions identified and articulated. In fact I would go so far as to call on you and the other brave voices who identify the problems, to start listing and organizing solutions to the problem and posting such on the end of articles such as these. I write letter to politicians, I sign petitions, I share posts, I engage in conversation and debate with family and work colleagues, I organized a guest speaker for our congregation from ACL during the sic safe schools coalition push, I am planning on getting to a peaceful march like march for the babies (living in a remote locale is a hindrance) and I donate to various brave voice individuals and groups. What is the next level of action for what is currently happening seems to be piecemeal? Surely some of you conservative voices are collaborating and working on more large scale plans? Am I not following the right pages? How do the people of Victoria extricate themselves from this mess without going to the opposite extreme of unleashing anarchy which will potentially lead to an even more totalitarian government? Do they simply wait to the next election and vote Comrade Dan out? What can they do to ensure Dan is voted out and is not replaced with yet another dictator in the making? We the people need clear guidance and organisation like Ghandhi was able to acheive to great affect. Keeping in mind the movie Ghandhi was a movie, it still portrayed real events that were effective, notably the mass organised non violent refusal to comply with government dictates in South Africa and India that shook both countries. What can we do here that is equally non violent (from the protestors side) and as impacting?

  2. Good Afternoon Bill,
    Today’s Bible Reading passage was Romans 13 vs 1 – 10 requiring your interpretation on Passage 1 – 5
After our service a group of the congregation like to discuss the readings, with everything going on in Victoria many but not all interpreted these passages as we should accept what the States proposals are and not question, as the authorities that exist have been instituted by God. As a group we have decided to do more Bible Study I think it is much needed we all agreed to stop being pew warmers and embrace the true word of God. Thanking you in anticipation and apologize for the change of subject.

  3. I followed with extreme interest the ‘Freedom Day” protests yesterday, and especially what was happening to Avi Yememi. It seems that the protest got a little out of hand with some being arrested for bad behaviour, but it is action like this, with good behaviour, that will break the tyrannical power. Good on those people who were willing to say something, do something, pay the fine or even get arrested.
When the government will no longer listen to reason or to the will of the people, there comes a time when we need to be civilly disobedient, and to pay the consequences.
We will more and more need to show that we are not afraid of the government.
We will more and more need to be coldly wise, and fully informed, so that when we are disobedient we can do it with a fully convinced conscience.
Already we need to be giving encouragement and support to the police and other government officials who are disturbed by this and would like to conscientiously object to requests and even commands from their “superiors”.
Giving in to bullies encourages them to go further with their bullying, they want to see tears or anger. We will give them anger, righteous anger, anger not for ourselves but for our wives and kids, for our friends and neighbours, for our communites and towns, for our culture, our States and our Nation.
    Don’t give in.

  4. The metric that Andrews uses – a reduction in covid19 cases and deaths – is simply wrong. You must take a broader view of all effects.

If you cannot consider the harm your own response wreaks by considering deaths from all causes compared to previous years you are simply citing stats without context. It is sometimes helpful to use deliberately extreme hypothetical examples to highlight why this matters.

One such example might be like this – you magically achieve no deaths by covid19, but the government response meant that 50,000 people committed suicide and 100,000 died earlier than they should have from cancer because they could not access medical care as easily. Now, I know that is never going to happen, but it shows why an overall view matters, not one that is focused just on ‘getting covid19 numbers down’.

Indeed, the Victorian Labor government’s narrow obsession with this one statistic virtually guarantees a bad response, as they refuse to consider secondary effects of their own policies as if they don’t exist. At the very least it is childish and immature, at worst it is criminally negligent.

Mark R if he wants a reduction, he has it already: https://www.covid19data.com.au/recoveries

My favourite site for official government statistics but run by volunteer citizens in the community, not by government employees.

  6. Just went to Amazon and bought the book (Kindle version which cost $A10.50).

  7. Hi Bill,
I hear what you are saying and believe me I know how you must be feeling. The feeling of helplessness is are horrible lonely feeling. I know this because I too feel the same way and so we should. If we are truly God’s children then we will feel like Abram felt when God was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. He pleated with the Lord not to destroy the city if there were still righteous people living within it, and as you know except for Lot’s family there were none, so it was destroyed. Like you I write down everything that is in my heart in the hope of reaching out to others, and even though my letters go unnoticed by most it still helps me to release all those feelings of frustration and anger with the expectation that it may at least have helped someone else understand what is going on. I convinced myself that the anger I felt was are righteous anger, however the Lord had to show me that if I start to hate the people that are harming us then I am no longer acting in love. You see love is what it is all about, and so few of us really understand the fullness of God’s love. So few of us know that when we say that Perfect love drives out fear that there is no such thing on earth as perfect love and that is because that Perfect love is Jesus Christ himself. In these troubling times we all need to live in that Perfect love so that the spirit of fear cannot harm us. As much as we all hate what is happening in Melbourne, what we forget is that most of the people that live there are lawless people that want nothing to do with our Lord. What ever is happening over there our Lord is allowing it to happen. He is waking up his church and there is are shaking going on. So hold fast brother and rest in Jesus he has got it all covered. When the Christians over there come out of this, their light will shine and that will draw others towards Christ our Lord. One last note. Look up Col Stringers u tube video called Australia’s Christian Heritage 2014. I found it very inspirational and also at the end it mentions Melbourne which may give you are clue as to why these things are happening over in Melbourne. I look forward to your next article. Keep up the good work. Love Ingrid

  8. Bill in response to Bob Stephens letter and what I have already mentioned to you. Look up YOUR WILL BE DONE by Arthur A. Chresby on the internet. Instead of doing protests get everyone to write letters to the Queen…….it can’t hurt. By pass the Governor General who is useless, and go directly to the Queen. This will be something that has never been heard of before. Everyone does protests, and Andrews is only going to turn it against them. If the Queens gets hundreds and hundreds of letters complaining about Andrews rolling up to her door it can’t be ignored and you can bet the media and the UK Government will get are wind of it also. It will certainly put Andrews in the hot seat and it can’t hurt anyone.

  9. Dear Bill, keep at the task Bill you are doing the work our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ called you to do and you have proven faithful.
To Bob Stephens, there is huge obstacles to getting a message out as seen by what the Victorian police have done in the last three days. They even called on their counterparts in New Zealand to interfere with an Australian living there for her own safety. She is a true warrior against the Paedophiles who are known to the police in Australia. They called accusing her of covid propaganda – something she is not involved in.
So where is the private and rapid responce mechanism? Australia Post? How many letters, how long to get a message out to All?
The gathering in Melbourne on the 5th was limited due to three very public arrests, Ballarat was cancelled for the same reason. If Bill was to post something, how long before he would be arrested, shut down or disappear altogether? We are in extremely poor Circumstances.

  10. Hi Bill. My thoughts are with everyone in Victoria. We too are incarcerated within WA but we are not locked up in our houses praise GOD! We have freedom to move about within the State but can’t leave the State. I think the crux of the matter is this ‘For GOD has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.’ 2 Timothy 1:7. This whole thing has been generated by fear. We have been force-fed fear for months through the media and stringent restrictions and we have yielded to that fear and in return we have reaped the opposite to power, love and sanity (a sound mind)! I don’t think Australians have ever experienced such powerlessness, helplessness and despair at the hands of those in authority over us. Neither have we ever experienced such hatefulness, harshness, hypocrisy and hard-heartedness, meted out by those imposing these draconian restrictions and deprivations of our freedoms. Many have commented on ‘the madness of it all’ and yielding to fear has seen an insanity we have never seen in Australia before. By this we know for sure we are in a spiritual battle and in my opinion nothing will save us except for National repentance and revival. Things will just go from bad to worse. Without GOD man descends to his lowest order and we only have to look at recent history and the horrors of World War 2 to see evidence of this. We are looking at the correlations with then and now and would be hard pressed to deny that history is indeed well on the way to repeating itself. But – GOD always helps us when we humble ourselves and pray and turn from our wicked ways! If only we would! Come on Aussies – it’s time! GOD bless you Bill.

  11. Thanks Bill I hear you, however in my own way I was referring to hardness of heart in reference to myself, however I will take on board what you said. I think Cheryl has explained it real well, and I agree with her in that what has to happen is repentance, however it needs to come from the churches first. Rev 3 1:7. What has happened to Australia today, happened on our watch. Also my suggestion regarding writing to the Queen in this instance was directed towards Bob Stephens who was actually asking for solutions. It is really interesting because there was are marked contrast between his response and Mark’s. Clearly Bob is not giving up to easily and I want him to know that he is not on his own, there are many of us of like mind that are doing the same. Like both yourself Bill, and Bob I keep putting pen to paper, writing to our Leaders and engaging with others. I even had are few choice words of wisdom emailed to Andrews, I was so angry at him for what he is doing to you guys. (Which is where hardness of heart came in and the Lord had to correct me in that area). These days that is all that I think about and my family think I am going mad. My heart goes out to you all and my prayers are with you. We all need to keep fighting the good fight in the ways that the Lord has called us to do, and through the power of his love which has no place for fear. We all need to get to that place to be used effectively by our Lord and Savior. Oh in regards to West Australia where I live also, we may be protected now, but once the next election comes……who knows……..god knows, so Cheryl be prepared that could be us next.

  12. “Freedom is never Free” and the longer the people accept the status quo, the worse it will become – very quickly, I might add.

  13. How much evil has been done throughout the years because people said it doesn’t concern me. “The problems of others are not our (my) concern”. Indifference causes as much death as malice. A person can have blood on their hands from not stopping something as much as from participating in something. A quote attributed to Aristotle says tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society.

Education has turned generations into docile submissive sheep when it should’ve turned them into intelligent inquisitive individuals. Look at the mobs especially here in America once told something by a “trusted source” they run with it never checking to see if it is true and refusing to believe anything that doesn’t agree with that source. Never has so much knowledge been available and yet so little intelligence among the populace.

I remember reading in the 90’s here in America that holocaust survivors were leaving for Europe because they saw “it is happening again”. That was around 25 years ago.

  14. Andrews knowingly lies – straight from the pit – in his powerlust to control Victorians.

You are all in our prayers!

  15. saw this on a video and thought I would post it here:

    never cared:
-I never cared if you were “gay” until you started shoving it in my face, and the faces of my children.
-I never cared what color you were, until you started blaming my race for your problems.
-I never cared about your political affiliation until you started to condemn me for mine.
-I never cared where you were born until you wanted to erase my history and blame my ancestors for your current problems.
-I never cared if you were well-off or poor, until you said you were discriminated against, when I was promoted because I worked harder.
-I never cared if your beliefs were different from mine, until you said my beliefs were wrong. NOW I CARE!
My patience and tolerance are gone.
I’m not alone in feeling this way, there are millions of us who do……and we have had enough! -Anonymous

  16. Hi Bill,
I had two high risk pregnancies which took away my freedoms in 2002 and 2006, as I had to stay in hospital for nearly a month for each pregnancy and birth. I couldn’t believe that God had created my daughters with no natural way of getting out of my womb because their placenta was covering my cervix. I was a ticking time bomb with these high risk pregnancies, as well as I had to mentally prepare for the possibility of having a massive bleed, so my daughters were delivered early at around 37 weeks gestation. In 2002, I wanted to leave the hospital to celebrate Christmas and New Years day, but it wasn’t safe so I stayed in hospital. In 2006, I wanted to go with my husband to see the 2006 Commonwealth games in Melbourne, but I had to stay in the hospital with my sick baby. However, these pregnancies have prepared me to cope with the current stage 4 COVID19 restrictions because I now have much more freedom to exercise and shop compared to a hospital room with no fresh air. I am currently enjoying my house and backyard, as our son is living alone in a 37sq metre Unit located 2km away from our house. I now appreciate the small things in life, and I know that God does give me the strength to deal with this COVID19 pandemic. I had to rely on other people to drive me places for 6 weeks post-caesarian x2, so I am grateful that I have more freedom to drive in stage 4 COVID19 restrictions. God does understand our situation with COVID19 restrictions in Melbourne and he can give us inner peace. I don’t blame God for giving me placenta previa x 2, nor do I blame God for giving Melbourne COVID19. These problems don’t get solved by blaming others and I pray that more Melburians will turn to Christ during this COVID19 pandemic. I am praying that my brother can have his 2nd cataract surgery in Melbourne, as God answered our prayer when he had his 1st cataract surgery after the first COVID19 wave. God Bless your faithful ministry.

  17. I think & pray for all of you fellow Australians in Victoria going through this very difficult (and ridiculous) lockdown.
When thinking about how you might protest lawfully, could you go outside your homes into the front yards, on to balconies, or whatever, at the same time before sunset each evening or something? With banners or signs of protest?
Post the vision daily on social media. Get some groundswell of support going (using the NHS clapping as a loose example). The repetitive nature may generate some media interest.
For those who are really struggling with how powerless they feel, it may give them something positive to focus on & help their mental health.
Just an idea that may prompt a more creative person to think of something even better.
