Changing Australian Politics and an Unchanging Jesus

On the Liberal Party spill:

Already numerous expert political commentators have said heaps about the Liberal Party leadership challenge; what led up to it; and what might result from it. I make no claim to being an expert political commentator, but over the past decades I have said heaps about politics, and Christian reflections on it.

Here I offer just the briefest assessment, simply utilising some bullet points. The main emphasis I will present here is how the Christian might look at such things. Some points might be debatable, but hopefully most will be agreed to by most believers.

The facts

-A 15 per cent approval rating for Sussan Ley was simply unsustainable, so a spill had to be called.

-Angus Taylor beat Ley by a vote of 34 to 17, a convincing win. In May, 2025 Ley had beaten Taylor 29 to 25.

-Jane Hume beat Ted O’Brien for Deputy Leader by 30 votes to 20.

-Ley said she will be leaving politics altogether, so a byelection for the seat of Farrer will have to be held.

-The battle between Liberal moderates versus Liberal conservatives will likely continue.

-Whether Taylor is a real deal conservative is a moot point.

-Whether he can bring together a divided and dispirited Liberal Party remains to be seen.

-How all these recent changes will pan out in terms of future electoral success also remains to be seen.

Spiritual reflections

-I have been around for a long time now, and I have been involved in political matters for quite some time, be it in the form of lobbying, commentary, and so on.

-The longer I am around, the more I see how limited politics ultimately really is.

-Politics is very important, and Christians dare not ignore having a political presence in various ways.

-But politics alone will not fix what ails us. Politics will not save us.

-Yes, some political parties are better than others. Some politicians are better than others. Some policies are better than others.

-But what can only fully and finally save us is when God’s people get on their knees before God and repent, pray and seek his face.

-Unless we come to an understanding of this, we will keep being disappointed and discouraged by politics.

-Jesus IS the answer – to everything. We need to seek him more than ever, and not less.

Pray

-I will now add Taylor and Hume to my daily prayer list. They will join folks like Anthony Albanese, Pauline Hanson and others. All Christians should do the same. They sure need our prayers.

-I will pray that God’s will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

-I will pray that God shows mercy and grace to Australia.

-But if God is now giving us over to our own sin and rejection of him, I will recognise that we fully deserve his judgement. And I will pray that we still cling to him as things continue to get worse in the political and social arenas.

-I will thank God for being on the throne and never changing. That reality is our only hope, not the shifting sands of politics.

  1. Thanks Bill.
Angus Taylor instead of Susan Ley? It’s more of the same, in different clothes, and with a few variations here and there.
Meanwhile, One Nation is making the running, and the latest I see from my wife’s Facebook page this morning is that Pauline Hanson is bringing to her team some qualified people, a number of whom are Christians. For myself, I have joined One Nation and hope the surge in popularity translates into votes.

  2. Thanks Murray. Yes as I say, it remains to be seen if Taylor will be any better. And as I also say, Pauline is in my daily prayers. One Nation may be the party conservatives need to support.

  3. I suspect Angus Taylor will be less of the “we need to do everything the ABC says” school of thought which has plainly white-anted the LP. Whether he will be on track remains to be seen.

  4. I agree Bill, a change of Liberal Party leader may not get much more support as their policies need over hauling. They aren’t standing up against zero carbon emissions, gender transitioning or abortion so best to join Pauline Hanson’s One Nation where at least she is against uncontrolled immigration that is adding to ruining our great country. I’ve heard that our Australian government is going to collapse. I don’t know when or how but cannot wait for it to happen as these politicians cost a lot of money to keep, then they resign and we have to have another costly by-election. I’m still with the Australia One Party because they are against full-term abortion, paedophilia, government control etc as I believe the only way for Australians to wake up is to let it all collapse under the upside down policies/ideologies we have let come in.

  5. Thanks for this article, Bill. It’ll be interesting to see if the Libs retain Ley’s seat of Farrer, as Coaltion voters generally don’t like by-elections.

  6. Taylor voted the same as Ley 99% of the time.
They’re just putting lipstick on a pig to fool voters.
