Major Court Victory on “Conversion Therapy”

This good news offers hope for so many:

Let me start with a scenario: a person who says she is addicted to chocolate, or to buying too many clothes, goes to a friend to get some counsel on how to change. Prayer might even be asked for as part of this. Yet the state has declared that anyone offering such counsel or even just praying for the person can be fined or imprisoned.

Far fetched you say? Simply change the addictive behaviour to unwanted same-sex attraction and you have the reality found in many Western nations. Those who offer advice, counsel and prayer to homosexuals who are struggling with their sexual desires are said to be engaging in “conversion therapy” and that is now against the law in much of the West.

And consider one more irony, before I look at the new court case ruling. If a guy thinks he is actually female and he goes down the path of irrevocably altering his body with chemicals, surgery and the like, what is he doing? He is engaging in “conversion therapy”. Yet here the state and others affirm and promote these dangerous bodily mutilations and irreversible procedures!

That is why the recent US Supreme Court decision striking down Colorado’s conversion therapy ban is such a huge win – not just for Christian counsellors but for everyone seeking help for unwanted conditions. Gerald Posner said this about the outcome:

Today’s 8-1 Supreme Court decision is another turning point in one of the most contentious areas of modern medicine and culture: pediatric “gender affirming care.” The court ruled that bans on so-called “conversion therapy” may violate the First Amendment when they restrict what licensed therapists can say to their clients. This is not a narrow technical ruling. It goes to the heart of whether the state can dictate ideological viewpoints in therapeutic conversations.

One report put it this way:

The LGBT sex cult has banned Christian counsellors from helping people who struggle with sexual sin in 23 states. SCOTUS just said that’s unconstitutional. The case involved a complaint from Christian counsellor Kaley Chiles, who was banned by the state of Colorado from talking about their clients’ unwanted same-sex attraction.

In other words, Chiles’ clients were people who voluntarily sought the help of a Christian counsellor to help them work through sexual sin. But Colorado, and many other states, have banned this based on the government’s ideological viewpoint that LGBT people are “born that way,” a theory that is not supported by science and yet is being upheld as the law of the land. https://notthebee.com/article/supreme-court-strikes-down-conversion-therapy-ban-in-major-win-for-christian-counselors

Importantly, eight out of the nine SCOTUS judges affirmed this ruling. So a large majority of judges saw these bans for what they are: unconstitutional, among other things. Many people directly involved in this arena have said how important this ruling is. Detransitioner Chloe Cole said this about the minority opinion judge and the decision:

Ketanji Brown Jackson is such a stain on our country it’s embarrassing. She stands with made up “trans rights” instead of the rights in the constitution she swore to defend. There has never been a more obvious free speech issue on the Supreme Court….

“Conversion therapy” in its lawful definition includes talk therapy that doesn’t affirm a trans identity. This means that until this SCOTUS ruling, psychologists in blue states were forced to participate in the trans delusion. Trans is a mental illness and now it can be treated.

The Finnish politician and Christian Päivi Räsänen who has fought lawfare on this matter for years now said this: “The U.S. Supreme Court defends freedom of speech and overturns a law that would criminalize so-called conversion therapy.” See my recent write-up abut her ongoing battles with the woke mob here: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2026/03/27/europes-ongoing-war-against-christians/

Comments by three other female conservative commentators can be shared here as well: January Littlejohn said this:

This is incredible news! Therapists have been under the threat of losing their license in states like CO for simply helping a child feel comfortable in their body, which is the compassionate & evidence-based treatment for gender dysphoria. This issue is akin to anorexia & now therapists have the freedom to treat this mental health issue ethically. God bless Kaley Chiles and thank you ADF Legal!!

Megan Basham tweeted the following:

So an interesting side note in this case. The woman who formally ran the Rosemead counseling center at Biola University filed an amicus brief in this case that took the same position as far left Justice Jackson. She didn’t want Christian counselors to be able to tell gender-confused kids that God fearfully and wonderfully made them male and female. She didn’t want Christian counselors to be able to help kids overcome their gender dysphoria and embrace their created identity. After I reported on this at realDailyWire, she was removed from her position. This is the power of real journalism, investigating Christian institutions. It isn’t done to attack them, it’s to preserve them.

And Allie Beth Stuckey made these remarks:

Wow, praise God! A win for free speech, a win for truth, and a win for people. Everyone should be free to access care and counseling that points them to Biblical truth and supports them in their struggle against sin. Mental health professionals should be able to. True, damaging “conversion therapy” is the kind that convinces kids that they’re the opposite gender. Affirming reality to children isn’t “conversion,” it’s truth-filled love.

Why all this matters

I have been writing about these diabolical “conversion therapy” laws for many years now. For example, back in 2018 I began one such article this way:

The endgame of the militant homosexual lobby has always been this: the complete and final elimination of any and all opposition and criticism. Not only that, but the compulsory promotion and celebration of this lifestyle has also been actively sought after and worked for.

And the biggest obstacle to all this has always been the Christian faith. The radicals have long known that the full acceptance and enforcement of their agenda can only take place when the Christian church is completely silenced. When it is muzzled by the heavy hand of the law, then the final triumph of homosexual activism will be complete.

Christianity insists that we are all born sinners, but that Christ came to deal with the sin question, as well as provide a way out of our chains. Christianity is a transformative religion in which people really can become new creatures in Christ. And that means even homosexuals can be transformed if they want to be.

But that threatens the very core of the homosexual narrative, depending as it does on the myth that homosexuals are born that way and can never change. Never mind all the honest homosexuals who have disagreed with this, and all those ex-homosexuals who prove this to be a lie.

So without question there is a massive conflict between the homosexual gospel and the Christian gospel. They both cannot be true at the same time, and only one can prevail. The homosexual militants know this full well, which is why everywhere they are seeking to make “conversion therapy” illegal and turn it into a major crime.

I went on to say this:

The term itself is a pejorative term, invented by the activists. Also called reparative therapy, all that it really involves is the offer of genuine assistance for those who want it. It has nothing to do with forcing anyone to do anything. If a person does not like his unwanted same-sex attraction and wants to get some help or counsel, they should be able to.

And that usually can take several forms: some just want the ability to stay celibate in this area, while others want to have some help with the actual attractions. And there are plenty of walking, talking examples of this very thing: many ex-homosexuals speak about how even their attractions have diminished, or disappeared altogether.

I happen to know many of these people personally. They were fully into the homosexual lifestyle for many years, but then they found a way out, and are so glad they did. Yet the activists want to make it a crime for anyone to offer this much needed help.

Imagine denying any sex addict the help they need and want. Should people struggling with various compulsive sexual behaviours be told they CANNOT seek any help, and they must remain exactly where they are – for life? I thought the other side was all about choice and freedom?

Here they are denying choice and saying people cannot be freed – even if they desperately want to be. But sadly one government after another has bowed down to the radical homosexual agenda, and is passing laws making it illegal for anyone to offer such help – even to those who really do seek it. https://billmuehlenberg.com/2018/12/11/the-war-against-conversion-therapy/

So this has been a massive win for free speech, for genuine counselling, for those needing help, and for basic reality and biology. Hopefully many other countries will also come back to common sense and stop the persecution of those wanting change, and those offering change.

  1. Unfortunately we have no such Constitutional protection in Australia and Australians do not seem to be waking up to the problems.

What we once had was common law protection but when things can be redefined, pretty much at random, that is no longer very much of a protection at all.

  2. Thank you for explaining this ban Bill, as when I first started reading about it, it looked like SCOTUS had stopped Colorado’s conversion therapy ban on transgendering, but SCOTUS is really scrubbing the ban so therapists and pray-ers can have free speech on transgendering so helping victims make a decision in the right way. All so confusing Bill. But one other thing I learnt from your article is that same-sex attraction is like being addicted to chocolate or alcohol, drugs, battered and processed foods etc. With God’s help we have to say ‘No’ to these things before we get addicted to them so we can choose the right way for our bodies.

  3. As always, Bill, your explanations of the truth about human sexuality are a breath of fresh air. Your time-consuming presentations are utterly inspiring as you pack in so much necessary, RELEVANT detail. Thankyou and God bless and protect you always.
