The Ongoing Suicide of the UK
Suicidal empathy and the death of the West:
Much of the Western world is now in its death throes, with various elites and political leaders allowing Marxism and Islam to destroy their once great nations. Much of Europe is gone, and places like Australia and the US are following close behind. One of the worst examples of this is the UK.
With hard core leftists firmly in charge of the Labour Party, and too often not much better leadership in the Conservative Party, it has all been downhill there for decades now. The grooming gang scandals keep being swept under the carpet; two-tier policing is now the norm; and mass migration of legals and illegals is transforming the nation as we speak.
Earlier this year Matt Goodwin released an important book on all this titled Suicide of a Nation: Immigration, Islam, Identity (Northstar). I have already penned a review of it – see here: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2026/03/23/the-suicide-of-the-uk/
But given the daily stories we hear coming out of the UK, it is worth revisiting. One key set of frightening figures is this:
The numbers are not just astonishing; they are barely believable. From 2018 to 2025, nearly 200,000 illegal migrants crossed the Channel in small boats, enough to fill a city the size of York. This is more than the combined number serving in the British Army, the Navy and the RAF. It is more than those who took part in the D-Day landings in June 1944.
Add to that the estimated 700,000-900,000 illegal migrants already in the country and a further 180,000 illegal migrants forecast to cross the Channel before the next general election, and Britain could soon have 1.3 million illegal migrants — a city larger than Birmingham.
When they arrive, the British people are then forced to watch open-mouthed as those who are breaking their laws are not marched out but ushered in. They are handed cash cards, smartphones, medical care, school places, hotel rooms, driving lessons, free public transport and university places.
In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis and deteriorating living standards, taxpayers read about discounts for illegal migrants on martial arts lessons, days out on dinghies and half-price e-bikes — benefits more generous than those offered to British veterans and pensioners.
While the National Health Service is treating British people in corridors and car parks, it issued nearly one million HC2 certificates to asylum seekers and illegal migrants in just five years, entitling them to free prescriptions, eye tests, glasses and contact lenses, dentistry, wigs of three different grades and travel to receive treatment. Asylum seekers account for 60% of these certificates, which were designed to help British people on low incomes. There is even a taxi service. In 2025, one illegal migrant revealed that after being moved from one hotel to another he ran up a £600 fare for a 250-mile round trip to visit his GP about a sore knee. How is any of this fair, many people ask? (pp. 88-89)
Shocking stuff indeed. No wonder there is a widescale populist revolt, with parties like Reform UK and Restore Britain on the rise. The people have had enough – and rightly so. And given that this was the fault of not just Labour but the Conservatives as well, the people are rejecting the Uni-party big time.
And daily we read even more such horror stories. The latest example of the UK elites happily bringing in those who want to destroy the nation is that of a Hamas operative who was granted asylum and British citizenship – only to plan more terror attacks. One news report says this:
Britain granted asylum and citizenship status to a former bodyguard to the leader of Hamas, it has been reported. Named only as Mr X for legal reasons, he then allegedly plotted an anti-Semitic terrorist attack before the second anniversary of the Oct 7 massacre, according to the Sunday Times.
The suspect served in the personal security detail for Ismail Haniyeh – Hamas’s leader in Gaza between 2007 and 2017 – before moving to Britain more than 10 years ago. It poses difficult questions for the Home Office, MI5 and MI6 because Mr X was able to build a life in this country despite knowledge of his background. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09/27/hamas-chief-former-bodyguard-british-citizenship/
And this madness is not just recent. Toward the end of Goodwin’s book he speaks about the downfall of London. He makes it clear that what we just read about in the news has been going on for a very long time indeed. He writes:
The city’s welcoming embrace extends even to those who hate us and want to destroy us. As early as the 1990s, London was harbouring so many terrorists that French security forces came up with a new nickname for it: Londonistan.
In another classic expression of suicidal empathy, the British state has thrown money at people who hate everything about us – our values, our culture, our country. Consider Muhammad Sawalha, allegedly a leading fundraiser for Hamas, the extremist Islamist group that murdered and raped 1,200 Jews in October 2023.
Despite the BBC Panorama television programme suggesting that Sawalha had ‘masterminded much of Hamas’ political and military strategy’, he was still allowed to settle in Britain and given social housing, once again paid for by the British people. British taxpayers did not just fund his social housing; they helped him buy his property through a Right to Buy scheme, including a discount of £112,300, and for good measure made him a British citizen. Homes for British families? Not a chance. Homes for Hamas? Absolutely.
Nor is this the only example of the British people being forced to subsidise foreigners who hate Britain and the British people. Take the four-man Islamic State terrorist cell their captives nicknamed ‘the Beatles’ on account of their English accents. These Beatles were not Scousers. All four grew up in that very place elites tell us is a beacon of diversity: London.
The group was active in Syria and Iraq, but appeared on screens around the world in grisly videos of the beheading of victims including the aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning. Even by Islamic State’s standards, they were notorious for their brutality – torturing victims and subjecting them to mock executions. They made James Foley, an American journalist, endure a pretend crucifixion.
The most vicious member, Mohammed Emwazi, was nicknamed ‘Jihadi John’. Before joining Islamic State, Emwazi and his family had been subsidised by the British people, living in social housing on the Mozart Estate in Queen’s Park, where more than half of all social housing has gone to households headed by somebody who was not even born in Britain.
Goodwin continues:
Another extremist funded by the British people is Egyptian al- Qaeda hate preacher Hani al-Sibai. He was suspected of radicalising Jihadi John, as well as the group that recruited a gunman who murdered thirty British tourists in Tunisia in 2015.
He praised the 7/7 al- Qaeda suicide bombings in London, which killed fifty-two people, as ‘a great victory’. In 2005, the US Treasury accused him of ‘training and providing material support to al- Qaida, as well as conspiring to commit terrorist acts’.
Nonetheless, the British state still handed him a cosy three-storey, four-bedroom home in leafy Ravenscourt Park, worth around £1 million, a neighbourhood where half of all social housing has gone to people who were not even born in Britain. He and his wife also pocketed some £48,000 a year in welfare benefits again, paid for by British taxpayers.
My critics will say I am cherry-picking cases. But I could go on for a very long time. What about the hook-handed Islamist preacher Abu Hamza? He, too, was treated to a huge five-bedroom house in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, along with welfare benefits of £33,000 a year for his wife and children, all while he radicalised young Muslims at Finsbury Park Mosque, urging them to attack Britain and the West.
So, too, was Omar Bakri Muhammad, the Syrian- born extremist cleric who became known as the ‘Tottenham Ayatollah’. Despite celebrating the 9/11 terror attacks, creating the extremist group Al-Muhajiroun, calling for an Islamic state under Sharia law, and branding Britain ‘Dar al-Kufr’ – the land of unbelievers – he was given a council house in Tottenham and welfare benefits. Yet another man who returned the British people’s generosity by using the free speech and welfare they gave him to call for the destruction of their country.
Hate preacher Anjem Choudary even claimed housing benefit from the state to pay his own father-in-law, whose mortgage-free house he lived in with his wife. Choudary described the 9/11 terrorists as ‘magnificent martyrs’ and encouraged his own followers to claim what he called ‘jihad-seeker’s allowance’. He justified the claiming of benefits by saying: ‘The money belongs to Allah and if it is given, you can take it.’
Counter-terrorism sources said that Choudary influenced more than one hundred British jihadis. One of his followers was Michael Adebolajo, one of the two Londoners who murdered and beheaded off-duty British soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich in 2013.
‘We have harboured those who hated us’, wrote Margaret Thatcher, in the shadow of the 9/11 Islamist attacks. ‘Tolerated those who threatened us and indulged those who weakened us’. Thatcher was absolutely right then, and she is right now. Look around London and you will find countless examples of the ruling class harbouring, if not prioritising, newcomers and outsiders who hate us, threaten us and weaken us – all in the name of a warped, suicidal understanding of empathy. The same mentality that allowed Pakistani Muslim rape gangs to operate for years now hands social housing, welfare, even passports to men who praise suicide bombings and dream of the destruction of our entire civilisation. (pp. 173-176)
The UK is in a real mess. Will it survive, or will it go the way of other once great nations? Time will tell. And it will in large measure depend on whether enough brave souls like Goodwin are willing to wake up, sound the alarm, and act.
Update
Just one more example of the death of the UK as found in this news story:
Five men arrested near a key U.S. bomber base in the U.K. on Sunday may have planned a “complex,” coordinated attack with potentially far-reaching security implications for American military installations globally, a former U.S. intelligence official warned. As counterterrorism police investigated after officers detained the suspects near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, a former Pentagon official also said President Donald Trump will ultimately be the one to decide the consequences if indeed the “trail leads to Tehran.”
The men were initially held on suspicion of offenses under Britain’s Explosives Act before being arrested on terrorism charges in connection with the airfield, a key U.S. Air Force hub and the primary European base for American strategic bombers. https://www.foxnews.com/world/foiled-terror-plot-key-bomber-base-signals-wider-threat-us-military-installations-expert
Pictures clearly indicate that they were NOT Swedish Sunday School teachers. No surprise that they were military-aged men of ‘Middle-Eastern appearance’. We can only assume the UK Government had cheerily welcomed these folks into the country as well, with no questions asked.
[1833 words]
And what do you know? The UK Gov released the 5 terrorists on bail! Fools and traitors! https://billmuehlenberg.com/2026/09/29/the-british-governments-war-on-britain/
Well said!
Thanks Christopher.
Unbelievable Bill. Sounds like Old Testament times when God let the enemies of Israel come into their land and take them over because the Israrlites had turned away from Him. Let’s hope people will wake up soon, get rid of most of the politicians and judges letting these things happen, but most importantly cry out to God in repentance to change what’s being happening. America has done it with President Trump taking charge of the matter sending ICE agents around to import illegal migrants, so why cannot UK and the rest of Europe?
Correct Lynette.
You (and the book you examine) provide excellent evidence of the way unregulated immigration — especially of people who have little in common with the existing society — is harmful and destructive. Lots of podcasts out of Britain also pursue this topic.
The only thing I take issue with is calling it “empathy.” I see nothing empathetic about it; rather, it is just “pathetic.”
Empathy should be directed at those already in Britain who are struggling, in part because money is being wasted on welcoming these immigrants, on excess bureaucracy, and on “woke” insanity of various sorts. Investment in the nation’s infrastructure and looking for ways to improve the economy for British people should be the focus. Only immigrants who go through legitimate channels and prove themselves willing to assimilate and to pull their own weight should be allowed in — and there are a good number of such people. Even then, a nation has the right to limit immigration to the numbers it can handle.
And one more point about empathy — I don’t see how it is empathetic to foster the Muslim faith. How does it show empathy to women who are married off as mere children to men they have never met? How does it show empathy to support extreme Islamic clericalism and the suppression of democracy?
Thanks Marla. Yes quite right and I hear you. Although the idea of false and dangerous empathy comes from at least three key books by three key authors:
Allie Beth Stuckey, Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion (Sentinel, 2024)
Joe Rigney, The Sin of Empathy: Compassion and Its Counterfeits (Canon Press, 2025)
Gad Saad, Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind (Broadside Books, 2026)

Hi Bill,
Apologies if I missed the question in an earlier article, but with all of this, I am wondering when there will be a call to be rid of the Monarchy, King or Queen be gone. I realize they have no real power, but you would think they would be screaming at the top of their lungs to right the ship if for no other reason than self survival. Did I miss your opinion on this in an earlier article?
But, I am so glad you are calling attention to this global problem…thank you
Ron
Thanks Ron. I am not sure if I have written directly on that. Will have to take a look.
I am an American born Brit who served as a minister (FIEC) for 36 years until retirement. I agree with much of your article, but several points. First, while much of the Conservative Party leadership in the past was complicit in nation’s decline, the current leadership under Kemi Badenoch is different. She and her team are pushing back against many of the policies on the economy, immigration and wokery that have caused so much damage. How deep all that is in the party and whether it can regain power and do something if it does remains to be seen. Second, while Matt Godwin has much good to say, he is committed to the Reform Party which gives him a political axe to grind. Third, much reporting about the UK in the US paints too bleak a picture. There are deep problems here, but it is not a dystopia. I live in inner London where life is very pleasant and I feel relatively safe. However, I worry about the direction of travel particularly under the present socialist government that is blind to the problems and pushing policies that can only make things much worse.
Thanks Kenneth. Of course everyone has a political axe to grind. But I pray daily for Badenoch, Farage, Lowe and others, that some major changes might take place in the UK before it is too late.
