Plenty of informed and concerned voices have warned for years now about the expansion of Islam in Australia, the failure of multiculturalism, and the plague of political correctness sweeping the land. Taken together we have a recipe for disaster. And today’s front page headlines make this absolutely clear.
The main set of headlines have to do with pre-dawn raids which took place this morning. Hundreds of police have swept on over a dozen properties in Sydney and Brisbane as part of an anti-terrorism campaign. Here is how one news item begins its report:
A series of anti-terrorism raids were sparked by intelligence reports that Islamic State supporters were planning a public execution in Australia, Prime Minister Tony Abbott says. Details of the planned attack have emerged in the wake of the biggest anti-terrorism operation in Australia’s history, involving hundreds of police officers in co-ordinated raids across Sydney and Brisbane this morning.
Mr Abbott was briefed on the police raid on Wednesday night, which included intelligence that public beheadings were planned. “The exhortations, quite direct exhortations, were coming from an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIL to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country,” he told reporters. “So this is not just suspicion, this is intent and that’s why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have.”
NSW Police will allege that some of the Sydney men arrested in the operation had communicated with the Islamic State organisation while developing their alleged plan to seize a random member of the public and behead them live on camera. Fifteen men were arrested during the co-ordinated raids across Sydney early this morning, with one, who police will allege was a principle in the alleged plan, due to appear in a Sydney court today.
And as this story is being played out just now, with new details emerging throughout the day, we also find this utterly shocking headline in today’s news: “Sydney Christian school targeted by death threats from ‘Islamic State’ flagged car.” The story opens:
A Christian school in Sydney’s west has reported death threats aimed at Christians this week. The principal of the Maronite College of the Holy Family in Harris Park told police that men made the threats from a car outside the school about 2pm on Tuesday. Sister Margaret Ghosn said the threats were general and then directed towards a staff member of the school. “They said, ‘We are going to kill all of you here,’ ” Sister Margaret said. “They were threatening to kill all Christians.”
The car reportedly had a flag, similar to those brandished by Islamic State jihadists, hanging out the window.
Witnesses told police the small triangular flag had Arabic words similar to “there is only one god and Muhammad is the prophet”. About 1200 boys and girls attend the Maronite College of the Holy Family, an Arabic language school formerly known as the Our Lady of Lebanon School. Earlier reports of the threats referred to the Our Lady of Lebanon Church directly across the road from the school. A priest from the church said the people in the car threatened to “kill the Christians” and slaughter their children.
Wow, Christians are now being targeted in Sydney! It is no longer just a case of the Islamic war against Christians occurring in Iraq or Syria or Lebanon. It is now going on right here in Australia. How much more blatant and obvious is the threat of Islamic jihad right under our own noses?
Yet once again our clueless, spineless and PC leaders have bent over backwards to deny the obvious. All this has nothing to do with Islam they insist! Thus Prime Minister Tony Abbott just said, again, “I just want to completely dispel any idea that this is about religion. It’s not. I want to completely dispel any idea that this is about particular communities. It’s not.”
Um, when Muslims planning to do Muslim things in the name of Islam are arrested in terrorist raids, then yes, Islam is involved big time. When Muslims carrying Islamic flags threaten Christians, then yes, Islam is involved. Yes it does have to do with a particular religion. Yes it does have to do with a particular community.
But still we have PC pollies insisting that this has zippo to do with a religion beginning with the letter ‘I’ and ending with ‘slam’. And so much of this plain denial of reality is sadly all about politics. Politicians without principle care only about one thing: getting votes. So they are willing to put the whole nation at risk, just to chase a few votes.
And Labor is even worse on actually clearly naming and identifying the enemy. And this is for a very obvious reason. Consider the situation in Sydney. The reality is this: there are 20 Western Sydney Federal seats, all with growing Muslim populations, 19 of which are held by Labor. As Miranda Devine rightly notes:
Labor is craven and obstructive on Islamist extremism because they don’t want to alienate Muslims in marginal seats in south-western Sydney and west of Melbourne. The most populous Muslim electorates in the country are Labor. Blaxland, held by Jason Clare, has a Muslim population approaching 25 per cent, Watson, held by Tony Burke, has 20 per cent. Next comes the Labor seat of Calwell, in northwest Melbourne, with 16 per cent. The fourth most populous Muslim electorate is the Sydney seat of Reid, with 10 per cent, the only significant Muslim electorate held (barely) by a Liberal, Craig Laundy.
According to our latest census, Muslims comprise just over two per cent of the nation’s population, yet we have cowardly politicians obsessed with placating Muslims and winning their vote. As a result, they refuse to put two and two together.
Yes terrorism is a big problem here. But it is Islamic terrorism which is the problem. Unless we address the real issue and actually identify the main culprits, we will never be able to defeat this foe. It is time to stop playing political games and start facing reality.
The reality is, Islam is a very real threat. We have regular beheadings done by Muslims in the name of Islam in places like Iraq, and increasingly in places like Britain. And now we were on the verge of seeing this happen in Sydney. Thankfully some of this has now been detected and stopped.
But this is not the end of the matter. We need to start implementing realistic and effective policies here. Much stricter immigration laws need to be enacted, and we need to be willing to expel any known jihadists, Islamists, IS members, or their sympathisers.
Both Federal SA Senator Cory Bernardi and NSW state politician Fred Nile have recently resumed calls for a ban on the burqa. That is the very least we can do. Yet as usual they are both being demonised for even raising this as an option. Go figure.
Let me tell you one thing: A nation is pretty much curtains when politicians get more criticism for their concerns about the political ideology of Islam than do those who are actually promoting terrorism, jihad and bloodshed.
