Israel: A Reader

Some helpful volumes on various aspects of Israel:

There would be at least three broad groups of books that can be mentioned when it comes to reading about Israel. They would be: ‘Israel and the Old Testament,’ ‘Israel and the Church,’ and ‘Israel Today’. There is some overlap between these three, but they are nonetheless somewhat distinct. Here I will briefly speak to each grouping and offer some recommended reading. All up, there are 120 volumes featured.

Israel and the Old Testament (60 books)

Those who know even just a little bit about what is covered in the 39 books of the Hebrew Bible will know that it is overwhelmingly the story of ancient Israel. We learn about the beginning of Israel way back in the first book of the Bible (the call of Abram in Genesis 12), and it extends right through to the prophetic book of Malachi.

So to read and study the Old Testament is to read and study Israel of old. And a whole array of volumes can be mentioned here, including OT histories, OT surveys, OT introductions, OT theologies, OT archaeology, OT commentaries, and so on.

With so many volumes to choose from here, I must refer you to an older piece on this that I wrote: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2018/09/16/bible-study-helps-the-old-testament/

Israel and the Church (30 books)

Volumes featured here deal with how we are to understand the relationship between Israel and the church. Matters like supersessionism (fulfilment theology, or replacement theology); how the Old and New Testaments relate; and so on are discussed here. Some of the books do take a fulfillment position, while others critique it.

  1. Thanks Bill.
Just carefully perusing the titles and authors and indeed publishers, is a lesson in itself.
In these days the extremes of views about Israel have been shown, and sadly the popular thing seems to be to pick a camp and eshew nuance.
Many if not all of these writers developed their view over time and some have changed it.
I have kept an eye on Sam Shamoun somewhat over the years and he openly confesses that he favoured dispensational views, but not now.
Sadly he appears to have embedded himself in the supersessionist camp going by a recent discussion he had with a woman from a church that strongly preaches that the Jews are “God’s People” the “Chosen People”.
The scriptures that he used were well chosen and expertly presented, but he did not mention, let alone address Romans 9-11. Nor did he hint at the possibility that there may be some prophesies, Zionist sounding prophesies, that have not, or could not have been fulfilled yet.
I hope that he soon shows some nuance on this issue, indicating that the discussion was limited to challenging the woman; indeed the clip seems to be an extract. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP0aBnwjcFc
    The title of one book stood out esp. to me on this issue;
“Porter, Stanley and Alan Kurschner, eds., The Future Restoration of Israel: A Response to Supersessionism. Pickwick, 2023.
The Amazon blurb sounds promising including the fact that there are a number of essays collected in the work.
“This volume is the most extensive of its kind as a major set of collected essays from a wide range of scholars on the question of the promises of God to Israel. These essays put forward the position that unconditional promises were given to Israel, which have not been fulfilled in the church or any other entity. At the consummation, there will be a continuing role for the Jews, realized through their national and territorial hope of a restored-redeemed Israel. This volume contains an eclectic group of contributors who have reached this position from various approaches to interpretation. The essays exhibit both positive argumentation and engagement with supersessionist literature.”
I think I might get it.
