Doug Wilson on the Islamo-Commies

The threat that we must face and resist:

When someone pens a useful book dealing with quite important issues, and then revisits it a decade later, it is worth looking at both. That is what I will do here with a book and an article written by the American Christian thinker and pastor Douglas Wilson.

If you are a fan of Wilson, you would have a number of his books, read many of his articles, and viewed a number of his podcasts. All that makes me a Wilson fan. And if you have read some of my articles here, you will know that I have penned various pieces on the Left’s embrace of Islam – and how that will not end well for the Left.

Well, an older book and a new article by Wilson tie all this together. Let me start with the book. Back in 2016 Wilson released Empires of Dirt: Secularism, Radical Islam, and the Mere Christendom Alternative (Canon Press). In it he looked at the two main contenders to the Christian faith and worldview: Islam and the secular left.

In the Introduction he explains some of the key terms he is using. He first mentions the much-maligned term “theocracy”. He says that “all societies are theocratic, and the only thing that distinguishes them is which God they serve. I want a theocratic society that maximizes human liberty, including liberty of consciences, and since this is a good thing, this means that we have to worship the God who gives all good things, the true and living God.”

And he says this about other key terms:

By mere Christendom I mean a network of nations bound together by a formal, public, civic acknowledgement of the lordship of Jesus Christ and the fundamental truth of the Apostles’ Creed. I do not mean establishment or tax support for any particular denomination of Christians, but it is possible (and necessary) to avoid such establishment without falling for the myth of religious neutrality. Religious neutrality is an impossibility. So mere Christendom stands in contrast to sectarian Christendom on the one hand and complete secularism on the other. Approaching these alternatives from the middle distance are the claims of radical Islam, about which more in a minute.

 

Secularism refers to the idea, popular for the last few centuries, that it is in fact possible for nations to be religiously neutral. This impressive trick is managed by having everyone pretend that secularism does not bring with it its very own set of ultimate commitments. But it does bring them, and so secularism has presented us with its very own salvation narrative, in which story the Enlightened One arose to deliver us all from that sectarian strife and violence. The horse and rider were thrown into the sea, and this is why you can’t put that Christmas tree up in the county courthouse….

 

Radical Islam is a Christian heresy, but one of the features that it retained in its departure from the truth was the idea that religious claims are total and absolute. Islam functioned in this way for many centuries, competing head to head with the Christians, before the Enlightenment arrived in order to demote all forms of religious totalism (except for its own). Muslims who have accepted the claims of this secularism are now called “moderate” Muslims, while Muslims who are faithful to the older, all-encompassing claims of Islam are called radical Muslims. The word radical comes from the Latin radix, which means root. Radical Muslims have gone to the root of the matter, and they are the ones who at least understand the nature of the conflict. If Allah is God, then follow him. If he isn’t, then we shouldn’t.

 

And I would say the same thing about Jesus. If He is Lord, we should do what He says. If He is not, then we needn’t bother.

Skipping through the next 250 pages, we arrive at the book’s final chapter. Two paragraphs from it are also worth sharing – especially since folks might think Wilson is calling us to take up arms to make America and the West Christian again:

Societies need to know God just as individuals do. If a society does not know the true God, the only God, then they will commune with idols. When they commune with idols, nothing good comes from it. You cannot, Christian, dispense with the Saviour and keep the salvation. When Jesus Christ is declared to them, in their office of nationhood, the biblical process of biblical transformation gets underway. If not, then not. Jesus said to preach to every creature. Jesus said to baptize the nations. Jesus said to disciple the nations. Whatever do you suppose he meant by it?

 

The means that he ordained for the conversion of this sorry excuse for a world was the folly of preaching. We will not bring this about because we have reached into our arsenal and pulled out our armies and navies, our parliaments, our laws, and our ivy-covered halls of learning. The next Christendom will come to be when Christian preachers speak it into existence through the folly of preaching.

Needless to say, I omitted a lot of material from the book. But I want to have room to discuss his latest article which just appeared: “The Rise of the Islamo-Commies”. In it he discusses his earlier book and what he tried to say in it, and then he goes on to look at how things are now going, ten years on. He especially highlights how Islam is gaining such a powerful foothold in the West:

But even back then, the secularists were playing footsie with the Muslims in the most incoherent ways. In their eyes, the condemnations of homosexual perversion in Leviticus and Romans made Christian schools a theocratic threat to the republic, while at the very same time the Islamists back in their home territories were throwing homosexuals off tall buildings. Said Muslims were part of the diversity that was supposed to be our strength, while the evangelical cake baker, reluctant to use his skill in icing to celebrate sodomy, was clearly a hate criminal. But all of that nonsense was just mild-flirtation footsie compared to what we have going on now.

 

This is how the terrain is now different. This is what has changed. We are still dealing with the same three alternatives—Islam, secularism, and the Christian faith. But what has happened is that for the secularists and the Islamists, in their version of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, the footsie flirtation turned into something far more steamy. They are now all in bed together, and with all their clothes off too.

He continues:

The rise of the Democratic Socialists in the Democratic Party has been quite a striking thing to behold. Mamdani, the major of New York, is a full-tilt commie . . . and a Muslim. Rashida Tlaib is a Muslim. Ilhan Omar is Muslim. The nominee for the Senate seat in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, is a Muslim. He claims he is not a full-tilt commie, but then again, he wants to get elected in Michigan. So give it a bit of time. He might see which side of the bread the butter is on. But maybe not—commies don’t have any bread. Or butter for that matter. And Hasan Piker, the commie commentator and firebrand extremist, was raised Muslim.

 

On top of that, if we look at the shock troops of the power play that is unfolding, whenever somebody drives a van into a farmer’s market, or an airplane into a skyscraper, or there is a shooting at a military base, or a bombing, or a beheading, the chances are excellent to outstanding that the perpetrator’s name is not Chaim or Ehud or Moshe, despite the Jews being the real threat around here according to some, but rather someone with a name like Mohammed, along with motives that remain unclear.

 

Now what do communism and Islam have in common? How did this odd bedfellow thing come about? There are two commonalities that I would like to mention here.

 

First, if there is one thing we should have learned from the postmodern theoreticians, it is that all postmodern theories are power plays, and so here we are. This is a power play, and as a power play, it does not have to make any logical sense. All you need is a set of fingers willing to grab. Communism and Islam both provide a rationale and framework for doing so. They each provide justification for total control. So that is the name of the game right now—total control. The only thing standing in between them and that total control is the New Jerusalem and all its suburbs, which would be the second thing.

 

They both hate the Christian faith and they both hate anything that reminds them of the Christian faith.

He discusses the upcoming US midterm elections and then says this: “We need to be geared up to vote against everything commie, commie adjacent, commie simpatico, commie-in-denial or, coming to the point at issue, Islamo-commie. And when you go into the voting booth, you should go into the booth looking like Aragorn at Helm’s Deep. Yes, things have only gotten worse over the past decade. The idiotic desire of the secular left to keep hopping into bed with militant Islam cannot end well. Indeed, the sad truth is this: Leftists think they will usher in socialism in the West by teaming up with Muslims. But what is going to happen is this: Muslims will usher in Islam in the West by teaming up with leftists.

And once that happens, the clueless idiot leftists will be the first to find their necks on the chopping blocks.
