A review of Stealth Jihad. By Robert Spencer.

Regnery, 2008.

During the height of the Cold War many Westerners refused to believe that there was an “evil empire” intent on conquering the world. And if they did recognise the overt nature of Soviet imperialism, they were taken in by the covert operations. Thus agents of influence working in the West could use ‘peace studies’, the academia and the media to push their agenda.

In the same way today many Westerners do not want to admit to an Islamist threat, or want to play it down, or somehow blame the West for terror and jihad. And while they may acknowledge overt acts of terrorism, they are ignorant or gullible about covert jihad. Like the Soviets of old, the jihadists have learned that stealth operations can be just as effective as the use of bombs and guns.

Indeed, they are achieving far more by these covert measures than by a direct frontal assault. And they are fooling many in the West, just as the various Soviet front groups did during the Cold War. Anyone doubting that radical Islam is actively working to subvert the West needs to read this book.

Robert Spencer is superbly placed to tackle this topic. He has written numerous books on Islam and the threat that it poses to the free West. In this important volume he documents how the terrorists are winning without terrorism. Jihad has not been rejected; it has simply been temporarily suspended in favour of other tactics aimed at achieving the same ends.

The goal remains the same, says Spencer: “the imposition of jihadists’ ideology over the world”. They have learned how to co-opt and subvert Western education, media, the legal system and even top levels of government. And they have been very successful at this. Says Spencer, “they are well-funded, well-organised, and persistent”.

Although this volume focuses primarily on America, it is certainly applicable to most of the West. Spencer begins by quoting the jihadists themselves, making it clear that nothing less than the complete victory of Islam and the total imposition of sharia law is what is being worked toward.

He examines how radical groups such as the Islamic Brotherhood are working with “moderate” groups such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations to achieve their goals. Indeed, numerous groups which pass themselves off as moderates are really nothing more than front organisations for the radical jihadists and their hegemonic agenda.

A major way in which the jihadists are achieving their goals of subjugation and victory is by using the rhetoric of racism, multiculturalism and victimhood. These groups have been quite adept at getting Westerners to believe that any criticism of Islam is “hate-speech” and “Islamophobia”; is racist and intolerant; and is at odds with a multicultural society. They even now call opposition to the jihadist program “terrorism”!

Thus they intimidate their opponents into silence. And often the West is aiding and abetting this process. So fearful has the West become of appearing to be racist, bigoted, intolerant or judgmental, that laws are being passed and guidelines implemented which severely restrict genuine freedom of speech, all for fear of offending Muslim sensibilities.

Religious vilification laws, anti-discrimination legislation, and “hate-crimes” acts are being passed everywhere. The effect is to silence critics of radical Islam, while allowing the stealth and not-so-stealth jihadists to push their agenda at will. Vocal critics of Islam such as Oriana Fallaci, Mark Steyn and Geert Wilders have all faced legal and governmental opposition.

Consider the issue of education. Spencer documents how school textbooks dealing with Islam are presenting a whitewashed version of events, while being harshly critical of Christianity and the West. Muslims are demanding – and getting – the right to vet what our textbooks actually say. We are allowing this censorship to take place, and providing a platform for jihadist indoctrination and propaganda.

And while Christian students are banned from praying, reading the Bible, or citing the Ten Commandments in public schools, pro-Muslim classes and courses proliferate. In some schools there are exercises in which “classmates will become Muslims”. They memorise parts of the Koran, adopt Muslim names and shout “Allahu akbar”.

Then there is the “Islamic Pledge of Allegiance” in private Muslim schools which begins with these words: “As an American Muslim, I pledge allegiance to ALLAH and His Prophet”.

This indoctrination is certainly occurring at university Middle Eastern Studies departments. Many are now funded by Saudi Arabia, and most now promote the politically correct, pro-Islam agenda. They have become “propaganda mills for the view that Westerners themselves, and Americans in particular, are ultimately to blame for the actions of Islamic terrorists”.

Spencer also discusses how Muslims in Western nations are increasingly demanding “separate but equal” treatment, refusing to blend in but insisting on living free of Western influence, values and law. Spencer also looks at how calls for sharia law are being realised, with a two-tier legal system springing up around the West. These developments are part of Islamic supremacist ideology which argues for the inferiority of anything non-Muslim.

The book concludes with recommendations on how we can turn all this around. But in the face of the extensive, pervasive and ever-increasing stealth jihad, one wonders if these will be enough. Indeed one wonders if America and the West have the resolve to stand up for their Judeo-Christian foundations, and for freedom and democracy, or whether they will cave in to the onslaught of the jihadists.

However things pan out, we cannot say we haven’t been warned. This book certainly sounds the alarm. It is hoped that the warnings are read and heeded. If not, the future looks bleak indeed.

  1. To talk of Britain becoming the first Islamic state in Europe without reference to the whole picture is a mistake.

Deuteronomy 28 is where we ought to start http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=5&chapter=28&version=31

The first of the Ten Commandments says that we must not worship any other god than the triune Yahweh, the God of Abraham, for this would be idolatrous. We have become idolatrous by allowing Prince Charles, the adulterer, to embrace Islam and proclaim himself the defender of all faiths. http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2003/11/is-prince-charles-a-convert-to-islam.html

We have to look at the degenerate nature of Britain with the Prime Minister openly praising and encouraging filth, such as the Terrance Higgins Trust: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC_NK72YfVw (Gordon Brown’s encouragement of Terrence Hiiggins Trust. Play the video).

Winston Churchill, in 1898 wrote his famous analysis of Islam. All of it was correct except his conclusion that our superior technology would stop us from being overrun. Well Winston, they have overrun us and no amount of technology can save us. Neither can the superiority and enlightenment of the liberals and secularists. Our secularist ideology is putty in their hands.

When Alastair Campbell famously boasted that we in Britain “don’t do God” he was speaking not just for his master, Anthony Charles Lynton Blair (Tony to his friends) but for British politics in general.

Well God is about to do Britain. Britain has only two choices: either succumb to Sharia or reinstate the Bible and the Ten Commandments. There are no other choices. Australia wake up. Be warned

  2. 1) David is right. Many Western ‘Christian’ nations are no longer Christian. For example, the muslim cannot understand how a ‘Christian’ nation can tolerate homosexuality. in some respects, muslims cannot be faulted in thinking that the muslim religion is indeed more righteous and true compared to Christianity. The notion that these nations are Christian is a hindrance to the salvation of muslims.

    2) God has even used Nebuchadnezar and the Pharoahs to fulfill his purposes. Does it surprise us that God may be using Islam/muslims to cleanse these nations, nations that reject His Lordship while having a form of Godliness?

  3. Thanks Henry

Yes the West is certainly becoming increasingly decadent as it heads down the spiritual and moral gurgler. But despite that, I am not yet ready to give up on the West. The features of the West which largely sprang from the Judeo-Christian worldview are still worth fighting for: freedom, democracy, rule of law, freedom of conscience, and so on. All these virtues are absent, or are in short supply, in Muslim-majority nations and wherever sharia law is enforced.

And yes in the Old Testament God could use pagan nations and rulers as his instruments of judgment on Israel. But two things must be kept in mind: 1) Yahweh would in turn judge the pagan nation. Look at how Assyria is used by God and then judged by God in Isaiah 10 for example. 2) The OT prophets would tell Israel when God was using a foreign power as an instrument of chastisement or judgment. We don’t seem to have that same clear prophetic word today concerning the nations.

So while God may well be displeased with a decadent West, that does not mean we should be unconcerned about the threat of militant Islam and the spread of stealth jihad. We should be involved in at least two activities: reviving the church and being salt and light in the West. Some things are still worth fighting for.

  4. Yes Bill, “reviving the church and being salt and light” – this should be our daily prayer.
    Stan Fishley

  5. Bill said: “Jihad has not been rejected; it has been temporally suspended in favor of other tactics aimed at achieving the same ends”. Yes, quite right.
    Stan Fishley

  6. I totally agree. Unless the church becomes what it is meant to be (which means revival and reformation and restoration and possibly martyrdom) there is no hope for the west. Interestingly there are more Muslims than ever coming to Christ, mainly in the Middle East and Asia! That’s where the church is prospering because it is more “on song”: it has to be if it is to survive!
    Jon Newton

  7. I doubt very much the pursuit of democracy, neither do I believe that it ever existed – certainly not in Greece or Rome that were supported by huge slave populations. When have our political leaders listened to the people of God as opposed to the rabble? In 2005 the British government with stiff – necked arrogance, strutting pride and bulging eyes sold our freedom to criticise the idolatry of Islam, in exchange for votes? Danny Scott and Danny Nahlia actually came to London and pleaded with the labour government not to go ahead with the incitement to religious hatred bill. But it was not only physical blindness in the form of David Plunkett and Gordon Brown that they encountered.

We in the West have this illusion, this fancy, this conceit that we live independent, autonomous lives. Surely as our governments become blatantly tyrannical one would think that the scales would be taken from our eyes. No doubt we will still protest with, “but we live in a democratic country” when our Islamic masters say, “ But of course you do,” as we are led out for public flogging, amputation, stoning and beheading.

Though many of the Levitical laws were made obsolete by the blood of Jesus Christ, there are those that amplify the Ten Commandments which in turn are fully unpacked in the New Testament with the Sermon on the Mount. Those laws still stand. “Thou shall not kill” is amplified in Leviticus 20:1ff: “The LORD said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites: ‘”Any Israelite or any alien living in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death…”

Jesus says in Matt 5: 21, “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell“. Surely the unborn baby is even more closely related than a brother.

If Leviticus is correct God cannot shut his eyes to so many millions of babies being sacrificed to Moloch in the West that numbers just become meaningless. 7 million, 20 million, 50 million 70 million. How many? The Economic downturn, the rise of Islam, the lawlessness of our own youths should all make us return to God’s word, and I am talking about Christians, myself, instead of giving it a nodding acquaintance.
