Abortion Is Not Just a Social or Political Issue

The pro-aborts are imaging their real mentor:

It is imperative for the Christian to always view things from a much bigger perspective – not just in terms of economic or political or cultural aspects. There is a spiritual dimension that lies behind all the crucial issues of the day. Certainly when it comes to things like the culture wars, we are foolish not to bring in the spiritual considerations.

Indeed, to ignore spiritual realities as we discuss the main controversial debates of the day would be like a painter to ignore every colour on his palette and just use black and white. If he were painting a major snow storm that might be alright, but if he were painting deciduous trees in autumn, it would be unduly limiting.

At the very least, we know that spiritual warfare is part and parcel of the battles we fight – be they political, ideological, cultural or intellectual. We will never get very far if we ignore or downplay spiritual realities. The battles over marriage and family for example are not simply cultural and social matters, but at their heart are spiritual matters.

As such, either we side with God and how he intended marriage and family to be, or we go with Satan and buy into his attempts to ruin every good thing God has created. In such a spiritual war, prayer and intercession are of course needed as much as political lobbying, writing letters to the editor, doing street protests, and voting for onside candidates.

All this may make no sense whatsoever to the non-Christian, but all Christians should understand this quite clearly. All of life is being fought over on a daily basis. It really is a battle between good and evil. And at heart it is a spiritual battle. It was C. S. Lewis who rightly said: “There is no neutral ground in the universe. Every square inch, every split second is claimed by God, and counterclaimed by Satan.”

Abortion as spiritual warfare

With the above thoughts in mind, it should be clear as day that something like the abortion wars are not just fights over personal choice, autonomy, the ‘rights’ of women, and so on. Since abortion really is a life and death issue, it most certainly is a spiritual battle.

Indeed, one of the most important things that Jesus said about the devil and his hirelings fully explains just what is going on here. In John 10 Jesus contrasts himself as the good shepherd over against those who are not. And in verse 10 he says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

The contrast could not be any greater. And the abortion battlefield is as close as you will get in seeing this fully fleshed out. The pro-aborts quite literally are doing their master’s bidding: to steal, kill and destroy – certainly babies at least. Pro-lifers on the other hand are here to give life and to save life. It is the difference between night and day.

The most recent and obvious example of Satan fully enraged and fully going on the warpath concerns the decision by the US Supreme Court to revisit Roe v. Wade, the 1973 abortion case. It was recently leaked that it just might be overturned. All hell broke out over that one.

Angry and fanatical pro-aborts have declared war on SCOTUS, churches and the pro-life movement. There have been plenty of death threats already, and numerous cases of vandalism and fire-bombing taking place. Satan is mad as hell, and so are his followers. As but one example, consider this recent BBC news item:

A California man is facing a charge of attempted murder after his arrest near the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Nicholas John Roske, 26, had planned to murder a Supreme Court justice and was armed with a pistol and tactical knife, court documents said. The suspect was taken into custody at about 01:00 local time (06:00 BST). Protection for the justices has been beefed up ahead of a landmark ruling on US abortion rights.

While most of the mainstream media never reported on this, it certainly is not an isolated incident by any means. Steven Ertelt, editor of LifeNews said this:

As I write this email to you, things are getting really scary for pro-life Americans. This past week, an abortion activist was arrested near the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh after threatening to murder the conservative justice. The California man cited the leak of the draft ruling to overturn Roe as his motivation for trying to kill Kavanaugh.

Meanwhile, radical abortion activists who firebombed the office of a pro-life group in Wisconsin and Oregon, and who have vandalized over a dozen churches and pregnancy centers, struck again. Police and fire departments in Buffalo, New York responded to smoke and fire at CompassCare, a pro-life medical office and pregnancy center that helps women and children. The building was firebombed and the windows in the reception room and nurses’ office were broken and fires lit.

Graffiti on the building left by the arsonists refers to the abortion terrorist group Jane’s Revenge reading, “Jane Was Here.” The group took responsibility for the other firebombings, violence and vandalism. As if that’s not enough, these violent abortion radicals are planning to blockade the Supreme Court tomorrow to literally try to prevent the justices from releasing an opinion overturning Roe.

Thankfully one American media outlet has been keeping tabs on most of this. It has just released an account of this violence and hatred. Here is how the piece begins:

The Washington Stand has found that there have been at least 41 separate incidents of violent attacks against churches, pro-life organizations, and pro-life property across the country since the May 2 leak of a draft Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case that indicated the overturning of Roe v. Wade. These attacks include arson, vandalism, property theft, and property destruction.

These incidents do not include at least nine other occurrences of physical violence against pro-life advocates, threats of violence against churches, and illegal disruptions of church services that have unfolded within the same time frame.

In the same 40-day time period, there has been a single instance of violence against pro-abortion advocacy groups, in which a woman is suspected of committing arson at an abortion facility under construction on May 25 in Wyoming.

Despite the wide disparity in violent incidents between the two groups, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a “Terrorism Threat” advisory bulletin on June 7 that appeared to equate the amount of violent incidents from activists on both sides of the abortion issue. It stated, in part, “…individuals who advocate both for and against abortion have, on public forums, encouraged violence…”

The recent spike in attacks against churches and pro-life organizations is part of a wider pattern of violence that has seen a marked uptick in the last two years. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops released a report in early June that catalogued “at least 139 incidents … across 35 states and the District of Columbia since May 2020” against Catholic churches and organizations, including “arson, statues beheaded, limbs cut, smashed, and painted, gravestones defaced with swastikas and anti-Catholic language and American flags next to them burned, and other destruction and vandalism.” https://washingtonstand.com/news/churches-and-prolife-orgs-have-been-attacked-41-times-in-the-last-40-days

All this is not just a matter of differing social views. Christians and most prolifers know what a major spiritual battle this is. A number of prayer meetings and movements have already taken place, pleading for God to offer protection from the militants. Yesterday for example in the US we had this (written just prior to the event):

Stanton Public Policy Center/Purple Sash Revolution will have a candlelight prayer vigil asking for God’s protection over the Court and Justices and also for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. The prayer gathering will be on Sunday, June 12, at 7:30 pm at the Supreme Court. This prayer gathering comes after an assassination attempt of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and threatened blockade of the Supreme Court on Monday morning.

Stanton Public Policy Center is a women’s advocacy and educational group that works on issues of human rights and justice which empower and inspire women. It is affiliated with Stanton Healthcare which has life-affirming women’s health clinics in America and internationally. Rev. Patrick Mahoney, Chief Strategy Officer for Stanton Public Policy Center, states,

“It is deeply troubling that death threats, assassination attempts and acts of violence are being made against Supreme Court Justices and the Court itself. Violence has no place in American life and must be unequivocally and universally condemned. We are gathering tonight to pray for God’s protection over the Supreme Court and all the Justices. We will also be praying for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and an end to abortion violence which has taken the lives of 64,000,000 innocent children.”

We need to keep fighting the good fight on all levels. But above them all is the spiritual level. Spiritual warfare is crucial as we stand for the unborn. Please keep praying thanks.

  1. Hi Bill,

Fully agree neutrality is a myth. Secular worldview is diametrically opposed to the LORD and his word.
It is Christ or chaos … in terms of worldview lived out consistently.

Through God’s restraint of evil and common grace and his building of his church, he does not allow secularists to live consistently with their worldview. Hence freedoms and order have not been extinguished in the world, thankfully.

His purposes cannot be thwarted as he frustrates evil counsel (Psa 33).

But, as you have pointed out many times, Xtians are commanded to be engaged in contending for truth and the faith, prayerful spiritual war. That involves practical involvement too! Fighting against the destruction of marriage and abortion – the 2 biggest societal evils, I believe – while simultaneously sharing the gospel at every opportunity.

  2. Thanks Bill for letting us know what is really happening in the world as the news media definitely isn’t, in fact I was only thinking tonight, there is nothing much on the news. The devil is really trying his best tactics with Roe vs Wade but his antics wont last long as people are seeing what his followers are really like.

  3. Hi Bill,
Whilst reading your article I instantly thought of Eph.6:12 (NIV):
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” And of course you mention John 10:10 that the thief comes to kill and destroy!
A few years ago I compiled a list of Profound Statements and will share a few from the section on Abortion:
“Anything that must be killed in order for it to be terminated is alive.”
“That which develops into a human being, begins as a person.”
“If you say that a fetus is not a human, why does it have to be killed?”
“Abortionists say a fetus is only a potential human. God says it is really a human with potential.”
“If it is wrong to stop a beating heart outside the womb, then why is it not wrong to stop a beating heart inside the womb?”
I wonder how those who are against God’s gift of life (Abortionists) would respond to these Statements?
Unfortunately they are deceived and deluded.
Spiritual Warfare is certainly needed to restrain their evil agenda in continuing to murder millions of innocent babies.

  4. I was totally undone watching the movie “Unplanned” which came out about 3 years ago. A Christian movie documenting Abby Johnson’s personal story based on her book. I would encourage anyone having any doubt whether abortion is wrong, go watch it. All your questions will be answered. Every Life is a precious gift from God, as everyone is made in the image of Our Great God. Abortion is evil. I would even say it is demonic. Period.

  5. I find a nation gets the consequences of her actions when she abandons God. He gives time for a nation to return but there is a end to that time. His patience with that nation is not infinite. He will cut them loose because they have not returned and have instead heaped up so much sin so much evil deeds so much blood cries out for justice that he can do nothing else but bring the judgement needed. The judgment deserved.

I have observed a correlation between the godliness of a society and the size of its government. The godliest societies, following god and working to please him and keeping his word in their hearts have smaller governments while the ungodliest and atheists societies have the larger even largest governments. This is most likely due to the fact that godly people are governed from within by the Holy Spirit and even non Christians in those societies are governed within by their conscience, that little piece of god inside everyone telling them right and wrong, thus they have no need of external force to get them to do what is right and not do what is wrong. Yet the ungodly people and atheists haven’t the Holy Spirit and ignore their conscience so they aren’t governed from within so they need external force to get them to do what is right and not do what is wrong. At a certain point between the to you will find government expanding but the knowledge of right and wrong is still good enough to not warrant a huge expansion and new laws criminalizing things that were not ever criminal before, things that have no right being criminalized, will be made to justify and continue the expansion.

If you look at Nazi Germany Hitler was elected he didn’t seize power from the outside and in order to gain total control he needed a crisis something to engine an emergency that would allow for special circumstances when handling criminal and so on and only he could declare it over. Don’t be surprised if an emergency happens in various nations across the globe curtailing rights, “temporarily”, within 3-6 months.

    T minus 2 days.

  6. Another thought on abortion: in America nearly 64 million babies have been killed in the womb. That is over 10 times the number of Jews killed in the holocaust. Over TEN holocausts sins 1973 in America just using Jewish deaths. The number for non Jews was 5 million so the total, lowest because their is some dispute on the number of Soviet civilian death so I haven’t included them, is 11 million in the holocaust. Meaning we have had nearly SIX holocausts since 1973.

Worldwide side 1980 we are approaching 1.7 Billion dead from abortion. And from 1920-1980 you could probably add another 500 million for a total of 2.2 Billion killed in abortion! Based again on Jewish numbers that is over 366 holocausts in 102 years! Based on Jews and others in Nazi held Europe that is 200 holocausts in the same time!

We take blind comfort in the belief they were monsters and we could never do what they did. Not like them??? We have become them!

With so much blood CRYING OUT for justice HOW can America, and the world, escape righteous judgment from the Lord? How many souls must have their bodies sacrificed on the alter of convenience, bodily autonomy, and sexual freedom before the judgment is poured out??? I don’t know but with as many as have already been made there is no turning back getting back to a godly society and draining the cup so it isn’t poured out. I say America was lucky to last this long.

  7. Dear Bill,

Thank you for the article. Yes abortion is a spiritual battle and I am so thankful I had the experiences I had in relation to unborn life when I was still a teenager because it has both equipped and inspired me better to help fight it. I remember during the debates about whether to legalise abortion some were ignorant enough to refer to the unborn as ”blobs of jelly”. My early nursing experience on a gynae ward taught me that this was rubbish and I told them so. I said I had seen unborn life with my own eyes from its very early stages in natural miscarriages. Aside from that important witness which I am so grateful for I am also grateful for having been allowed to have a life at all. I thank God every day for my life. If I had been murdered in the womb so many other lives would never have been. My three children, seven grandchildren and soon to be nine great grandchildren would not be here. Years ago while selling raffle tickets for Right to Life I asked a so called educated woman [she said she was a scientist] who refused to buy one when she knew what the raffle was for if she would be sorry if she was robbed of her life at any stage. With conviction she replied ‘Well if I had still been in the womb when it was taken away I wouldn’t know any different would I?’ I said but God would know because he knew you BEFORE you were knit together in your mother’s womb. She said she didn’t believe in God anyway so I concluded that when there is no belief in a Creator God life is cheapened and can be got rid of for any reason which again reinforces the fact that abortion is a spiritual battle. What I find hard to understand is people like Nancy Pelosi who has five children and is a so called practising Catholic can believe in and actually promote the murder of the unborn. The recent decision of her bishop to deny her Holy Communion is long overdue in my opinion.

  8. Pro abortion activists have a long history of violence and threats towards peaceful protesters, pregnancy care centers and churches. This has become more noticeable over the past week. This decision by the Supreme Court has further unleashed savage attacks and demonic type threats and graphic ghastly images. Also the sexualization and open defilement of children fits into this. Indeed this is a spiritual issue also. Many of those screaming obscenities and making threats are deeply troubled people. Often in the light of glaring truths that abortion is taking innocent life, the pro choice crowds will double down and make it the biggest fight of their lives. They double down despite glaring truths in front of them.
