On the Crucifixion of Cory Bernardi

There have been two main groups targeting Cory Bernardi all week: the rabid secular left which always hates anything coming from a conservative and a Christian, and so-called “Christian” feminists. I am not sure which group is worse in terms of the damage they have caused, and the dangerous slander they are peddling.

You of course expect all this from the secular left. The angry atheists, the hating homosexuals, the crusading commies, and the serial-pest secularists are all experts at hate, abuse, bullying and intimidation – all in the name of tolerance and acceptance of course.

bernardi 2So their orchestrated campaign of hatred, name-calling, ugly abuse and demonic filth is sadly to be expected. Consider the book site amazon, which has his new book, The Conservative Revolution. Within hours of it being posted there hundreds of vicious, vile and disgusting “reviews” appeared.

Of course it was instantly obvious that 98 per cent of these folks did not have the book and of course did not read it. Indeed, many of them said exactly that. They said they had no intention of reading it at all, yet they were quite happy to trash the book and the man regardless.

But we all know that the homosexual hate squad is expert at bullying, intimidation and stand-over tactics. And I had something to do with all this as well. Less than 24 hours after I posted my own review of Bernardi’s book on amazon, there were already 105 votes on my review – with only 29 positive! At the moment the numbers are 44 positive out of 146. And check out some of the nasty and diabolical comments posted under my review.

Just like most of these folks have not read his book, most had not even read my review. They certainly have not dealt with the evidence and facts. The homosexual tolerance machine has certainly rallied the troops to smash Bernardi and anyone who dares to defend him. Such lovely people indeed: http://www.amazon.com/review/R12U70EWIUAFFP/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1922168963&linkCode&nodeID&tag

Not much intellectual integrity and honesty there. And in Australia the Fairfax Media of course swung into full gear with one sordid attack on Bernardi after another. And we find the same scenario: it seems that not one of these foaming-at-the-mouth critics actually extended to Bernardi the basic courtesy of reading his book.

It was all attack mode from the get go. So full of hate and animosity is the Fairfax press to anything even remotely Christian and conservative that everywhere you looked and listened, there was one blistering and blustering attack after another. All to be expected of course.

But what should not be expected were all the so-called Christians who also jumped on the bandwagon in pillorying Bernardi. And again, the overwhelming majority of these folks has not even bothered to read his book. They just chimed in with all the other bigots, spewing their anger and slander.

As I said to more than one of these Christian critics: Did you even bother to read his book first before you join in with the attackers? Did you even extend to him this Christian grace? Please tell me this: if you wrote a book, and it was attacked far and wide simply based on a few paragraphs ripped out of context by hostile critics, how would that make you feel? Would you say that was fair and proper?

One Christian feminist in particular spent the entire week publicly bashing Bernardi. Every opportunity this gal could find she was laying into him. Whether on radio or the newspapers, she seemed hell-bent on bashing this man and his work. It was one of the more appalling things I have witnessed by someone claiming to be a Christian.

She claims we need to have a discussion on all this. Hey, that is exactly what Bernardi has been saying all along. But constantly attacking one of our most pro-life and pro-family Christian Senators is hardly the way to do this. Very disappointing indeed. And the fact that our most secular left feminist newspapers were happy to run with her stuff is also very telling.

If this person was at all interested in genuine dialogue, and treating a fellow Christian with a bit of respect, there would have been a much more appropriate way to do things. Engaging in some private communications with the Senator would have been a good start.

And even if she insisted on publicly dumping on him, there are better ways to do this, if there is even the slightest concern about maintaining a bit of Christian unity here. She could very easily have changed the way she said things and it would have been quite alright, eg:

“Cory is quite right to emphasise the overwhelming importance of two-parent families for the wellbeing of children. But we must not overlook those in other situations. And I know Cory is aware of this as well. In our family policies we must…..”

Something like that would have been fine. But no, she turned the Senator into an enemy and a pariah, attacking him just as all the secular lefties and feminists have. That is not helpful; that is not conciliatory; and that is certainly not Christian.

Of course all Bernardi did was state the truth: he rightly thinks that in terms of the well-being of our children (which should be of paramount concern to all of us), a fence at the top of a cliff is always far more sensible, humane and helpful than a fleet of ambulances at the bottom of the cliff. Instead of being rebuked for this, these Christian critics should be congratulating him and supporting him.

Quiz time – who said this: “We know the statistics – that children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime, nine times more likely to drop out of schools and 20 times more likely to end up in prison. They are more likely to have behavioural problems, or run away from home, or become teenage parents themselves. And the foundations of our community are weaker because of it.”

So, was it Bernardi? Fred Nile? Jerry Falwell? Nope, it was President Barack Obama in a Father’s Day speech in 2008. Did this same Christian critic and all the others jump all over Obama at the time and chew him out, mounting an organised campaign of hate and vilification against him? Um, no.

But if a conservative Christian dares to speak the exact same truth, all hell breaks loose, even from supposed Christians. Go figure. But I am not alone here in my concerns. A few others are now publicly backing Bernardi. Let me quote part of Paul Sheehan’s article which appeared today:

Let’s look at the timeline of hate.
Monday: the first story that suggested Bernardi’s book was controversial appeared, as night follows day, on the ABC. Within hours of the ABC report, and interview by Bernardi on ABC TV following up on that report, Bernardi’s office in Adelaide was inundated by phone calls. ”The office was overwhelmed with calls,” Bernardi told me. ”There was clearly an orchestrated campaign of abuse which was levelled at my staff.”

Tuesday: The phone and email campaign extended to Amazon, where hundreds of negative reviews of The Conservative Revolution were published by people who had not read the book. and the comments at the office became more personal. ”There were questions to my staff like ‘Can you ask Cory how I should insert my tampon, as he wants to tell all women what to do?”’ Bernardi said. “My female staffers were told things like, ‘How can you work for such a bigoted c—‘, and ‘You have betrayed the sisters by working for him, you treacherous bitch’. Some left recorded messages. It was clearly an orchestrated campaign.”

Wednesday: Entsch weighs in via Fairfax Media, insinuating Bernardi is a self-loathing homosexual and asking what Bernardi would think if a member of his family turned out to be gay: ”Would he advocate sterilisation?”

This is despicable, and there is a subtext to this. After the Coalition won government last year, Tony Abbott dropped Entsch from the position of chief whip. And Entsch is friendly with Malcolm Turnbull, who is openly contemptuous of Bernardi. Entsch even mentioned Turnbull in his attack on Bernardi, saying Turnbull had been raised by his single father and was not a lesser person for that.

Thursday: a reaction to the hate campaign, with a heavy flow of supportive calls and emails. ”Interestingly, the email feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Bernardi said. All week, Fairfax Media has published a string of negative reporting, commentary and remarks about Bernardi, yet in this coverage no one has even pretended to have read the book.

If they had, they would see Bernardi quotes a plethora of studies and that it was a British Family Court judge, Sir Paul Coleridge, not Bernardi, who came up with the phrase that traditional families should be the ”gold standard” as the best protector of children’s welfare. Based on his Family Court experience, the judge said family breakdown was the root cause of most social ills and warns: ”What is a matter of private concern when it is on a small scale becomes a matter of public concern when it reaches epidemic proportions.”

Everything Bernardi has said is backed up by a mountain of social science data. As I have said so often now, to express an ideal in terms of public policy is not to denigrate any individual. It is about doing what is best for our children. Single-parents need all the support they can get, and many are there through no fault of their own.

What we are simply saying is reckless social experiments such as homosexual marriage, singles granted access to IVF, and so on, is a deliberate case of bringing children into the world without the two most important people in their life: their own biological mother and father.

To deny children this is simply a form of child neglect, if not abuse. So shoot me already. But I will always side with the well-being of children, and the wealth of social science data which supports the “gold standard” here.

  1. Once again I back Senator Bernardi and yourself in this debate, as well as Senator Madigan.
I was very pleased to read Paul Sheehan’s article and to hear a more moderate voice in this discussion.
Perhaps we should try to count the amount of supporters Cory really has.

  2. Bernardi’s critics have demonstrated what a dopey lot they are in vilifying the man instead of countering his arguments.

They can’t, so they resort to abuse which is never a convincing argument.

  3. In his recently released book The Conservative Revolution, South Australian senator Cory Bernardi is reported by SkyNews (6/1) as believing it “unacceptable that the abortion ‘death industry despatches 80,000 to 100,000 unborn children’ in Australia every year.”

The reactions of Acting Australian Greens leader, Victorian senator Dr Richard Di Natale and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to this statement are a disgrace. “ If Tony Abbott fails to clearly distance himself from Senator Bernardi then it will be impossible to escape the conclusion that he is quietly pleased that his dirty work is being done” said Senator Di Natale and“His attitude on abortion represents a massive step backwards when it comes to women’s reproductive health rights,” said the leader of the Labor Party. The only “dirty work” being done is that by Senator Natale’s erstwhile colleagues, doctors who kill babies. When doctors perform heroic deeds they publish diagrams of their surgical feats. But what doctor ever published his abortion handwork ? No graphics here. 80,000-100,000 abortions a year Bill Shorten, is a step backwards, not forwards for women. Senator Bernardi’s lament that so many women every year are delivered into the hands of abortionists to do their dirty work, represents a recognition that abortion isn’t “good enough” for any woman. That we are failing women as well as their babies.

  4. “Christian feminist” is an oxymoron in my book.
As a single mother who blames no one else for her status; who firmly and unequivocally believes that religious, cultural, social and political policies should all give priority to “Married with Kids”; who is grateful for the support and lack of condemnation and judgement for her single motherhood; who is well aware of the natural and unavoidable hardship and social isolation of being a single mother; who is a passionate advocate of adoption and adoption counselling being offered to every single sole pregnant parent and who is well aware and takes responsibility for the harm this status has inflicted on her children…
I say, you are right, Cory and you are right, Bill. Keeping hammering out the truth.
One more thing: it is the prolife Catholic community who have always and unfailingly given me love, affection, respect as a person and who have saved my bacon.
Thank you each and every one.

  5. Good point Denise, there is a culture of silence on abortion. I found a book titled Handbook on Abortion by Dr and Mrs J. C Wilkie with graphic photos when I was a teenager and was shocked and amazed that this was permissible.

  6. There seems to be an increasing amount of people who call themselves Christian but are not in the least concerned with actual truth, which I find strange for professed Christians. In reality they are Soothsayers whom the enemies of God love to point out as justification for their held position. Real Christians who know their Bibles and know their God are not fooled by these nominal ones. The sandy ground they sand on will not hold them forever. We need more Christian people who have built on rock, The Rock. I feel for Cory who has obviously done his homework. He dares to speak truth and is attacked by the willingly ignorant. This sounds more like the Christian experience than the nominal ones whom wouldn’t dare speak the same words as the God they profess to believe in. I’m with you Cory.

  7. Dear Bill,
Thank you for the article. The West Australian also jumped on the band wagon at the weekend “çrucifying” Cory Bernadi by publishing an article by a silly little dolly passing herself off as an investigative journalist. No wonder newspapers are on the way out when they publish such rubbish. Kate Emery, contradicts herself and is clearly incapable of rational argument. I doubt if she had read the book either. The headlines inform readers of the garbage ahead. They read “Education the key to Bernadi OUTBURST” as if his opinions are not legitimate in a democracy. They also use the old chestnut by deliberately showing a very unflattering photo.

Kate begins by wanting it both ways. She blusters irrationally that Cory offends women by his claim, which she naively refuses to believe, “that some women use abortion as an abhorrent form of birth control” when it is impossible to argue with the facts that most women seek abortions for social reasons and few do so for medical reasons. Then she asserts that she agrees with Cory on one point that she doesn’t want to see more abortions either. In that case one would think that it would be reasonable for her to agree to restrict abortions except on medical grounds. However, she wouldn’t agree with that because she says a little later in the article “that a woman’s right to choose is a fundamental one I would happily defend to anyone”

She says “Where the senator and I differ is that I have zero desire to reignite the abortion debate” presumably because if she did the argument about the humanity of the unborn child which she never mentioned once in the article would have to be discussed and like all pro-abortion supporters it is an argument they cannot win and they know it.

She seems to think that sex education is the cure all for everything from unplanned pregnancies, promiscuity, irresponsible parenting and watching pornography on the internet. She rabbits on ad nauseum for most of the article about how it should be mandatory in schools. Then like a typical left winger she ends with the despotic statement which said that “If Senator Benardi was serious about wanting to take steps that could mean fewer abortions he would promote easy and cheap contraception and emergency birth control for when best laid plans go awry” as if her opinions are the only ones worth considering. This woman sees sex education as the answer to everything but never mentions that it has to be taught along with moral guidelines and responsibility.

As she had an e-mail address I replied to some of her comments including the humanity of the unborn child and THEIR right to life as fundamental because if we don’t have that it precludes all other rights. I don’t expect to receive an answer. This is the second so called journalist I have sent e-mails to discussing abortion and am coming to the conclusion that they wouldn’t get an article printed in the West Australian unless it was pro – abortion.

  8. I have sent Senator Bernardi a note of encouragement, quoting a few lines from the Lord Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount:
“Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth” (Matth. 5:11,12,13a).

I would like to pass on the same to you Bill. Be encourage by Jesus’ words!

    Joost Gemeren

  9. This parable is as relevant for those who claimed to be Jews in Jesus time as it is for those who claim to be Christians today but who justify and join with the atheists who seek Bernardi’s blood;

And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. (Mark 12:1-9 ESV)

  10. Thank you for your ongoing commentary on this and many other issues. I salute both you and Senator Bernardi for making a stand on issues that are central to the life of our families and children particularly.

I have frequently wondered about the motives and intentions of many in Australia’s media. If the golden rule (which is so frequently misquoted in this setting in favour of “tolerance”) is so vital, why will no-one afford it to the Christians and conservatives? It seems that the Orwellian tyrants of our times have defined the very faith that defines what true tolerance looks like out of what is tolerable in our society!

God bless you and keep you. May you speak to our people for many mor years to come.

  11. Rank hypocrites. The Ignorant Bernardi bashers are the biggest bigots of all.

  12. One good thing in all this is the increase in voices against rampant feminism and leftist totalitarianism. I have noticed more Christians and others with some sanity coming out of the woodwork in the past few years, and people such as Bill of course give great encouragement to those who dare to speak out.

Those of us who love the Christian values which have shaped the west must of course realise the ferocity of the opposition and we must show our support to politicians and others who are on the side of right. Perhaps we should sing the second verse of the British national anthem more often-

    From memory-

O Lord our God arise, Scatter our enemies,
    And make them fall.
    Confound their politics, frustrate their knavish tricks;
    One Thee our hope we fix;
    God save us all.

  13. My wife, me and children began praying For Cory and his family last week.
We pray that God will put a force field of the holy spirit around him and his family, to Give them good and restful sleep and that all unclean spirits will pass by Cory and his family.

  14. There is a difficulty in proclaiming the beautiful truth we believe in in an age of sloganeering … nuancing them for a ‘searching’ or ignorant audience is always difficult. Senator Bernadi points out truths; they should be a case of ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’, but so far divorced from reasoning and reality are many modern people, that even the little boy of the story, adapted for moderns, would probably not care that the emperor were naked, and go along with the delusion. Modern man has trouble with logic, epistemological principles, e.g ‘a doesn’t equal not a’ and how to think well. Hence, following Descartes,Kant etc, we can’t know things as they really are, hence we make reality whatever we feel like. So yes, in our heart of hearts we know, Billy should grow up, marries Betty and they have Bertie and Belinda – and live happily ever after – however most are too jaded by their compromises as adults, too wounded by suffering and rejection, to really believe in these truths, and opt for second, third or tenth best, and request others be allowed to do the same, so they’re own tragedy is legitemised/normalised. We must aim our ideals high: we rarely attain them, but aiming low assures us we will achieve even less. I thank God for my single mother, but always yearn for a present, interested father – this was/is my cross. Cory has simply spoken the truth, and Bill has defended him eloquently.

  15. Once again, Bill, thank you. As the pool of good men (and women) shrinks.

  16. Dear Bill,

I am just letting you know that Kate Emery did answer my e-mail. She thanked me for my feedback but acknowledged that we would disagree on most things. Then she said that she cared more for individual rights than killing a cluster of cells! I wrote back at once and said briefly that I didn’t know that such ignorance still existed in 2014 and perhaps she would have more empathy and compassion for the unborn if she educated herself a bit more on their development and humanity. I said if she did she would know that by the time most unborn babies are murdered they are much more than a “cluster of cells”. They are fully formed and only have to grow.

Years ago I used to sell raffle tickets for Right To Life at shopping centres with pictures of unborn babies in various stages of development. It was a small but necessary effort to keep the humanity of the unborn child at the fore front of people’s minds as they shopped. Hardly anyone complained but it only needed one complaint to be banned from the shopping centre because they didn’t want to offend anyone. Now it has got to the stage where you are lucky if you can find a shopping centre who will allow you in to sell raffle tickets for Right To Life. This has made the mass slaughter of the unborn even more hidden. This coupled with the fact that the MSM has never given pro-life organisations any publicity for events such as the 40 Days for Life vigils and the regular weekly vigils by the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants which have gone on for decades and which are truly remarkable. This is to say nothing of the agencies which provide practical help to women who approach them. Whilst all this is wonderful the issue does need to be in the public arena because it is the public who will decide that enough is enough.Change has to come from the grass roots and cannot be imposed from the top.

  17. Thank you for your book review This was the information I needed to order multiple copies of the book – so a few of us can be informed and intelligently comment on the popular and often illogical opinions raging through the so called educated citizenry.
I am thankful for writer such as yourself who give us an opportunity to THINK! rather than be led by those who make the loudest noise.

  18. Often when I try to explain what the Koran teaches, I get asked, “have you read the book” I still haven’t finished it, it’s reading I would prefer not to do, but for the sake of the questioner I thought I ought. Intersting double standards.
Christian Feminists? Hmm. “You shall know them by their fruits.”
    Many blessings
    Ursula Bennett

  19. The media crucifixion of Senator Bernardi shows so clearly that the forces of evil are virulent and unrelenting. Anyone who strikes at the heart of Satan’s lies and twisted sociology will become a focus for derision. Although it is not an argument that the media can live with, the fact is that the God that created the first family had an ideal of harmony and stability based on the family ideal that is supported by truthful social science. In families where Biblical principles are followed and the couple have a sincere and honest relationship, God’s love can be found there in abundance. All children deserve to be conceived and born into a family where the mum and dad will protect, love and cherish them.
The good Senator, being defamed for this, is an outrage.

  20. As I was driving home last night I thought with increasing horror that the MSM stands by to immediately censor any news or action that it deems unacceptable to itself. If this is the case, (and I believe it to be based upon their performance), then it places a double burden upon so many and on Christians in particular, because truth is not acceptable, but whatever replaces it is.

It is a double burden because we not only have to consider an appropriate Christian response to the article/s, but evaluate whether the article/s is actually truth. We usually don’t have enough information to make satisfying judgements, but we sense something is not quite right, and that is an unsettling position to be in.

That it appears a group of people stand to pounce on news or events to conceal truth or twist it to suit their agenda is horrible enough, but what is more disturbing is that this means that at a foundational, personal level that truth is not loved (and I mean loved) for its own sake.

Truth needs to be recognised and loved so that we may be free in Christ, but the truth about anything else must be both loved and paramount if a civilisation is to exist and flourish. Without these two things, a civilisation or society (e.g. USSR) will collapse. A lie is no foundation for civilisation or societal trust.

The other stunning thing is Mr. Albanese’s response that Cory Bernardi’s beliefs are “extremist” and Mr. Abbott (and by implication, everybody else) should dis-associate themselves from him. Since when did affirming the human and Christian norms of heterosexual marriage become abnormal and extremist? To think that this man wanted to become our Prime Minister! But it does tell in what direction they want to mould and push us.

This view shows to me that normalcy is to be banished to the wilderness, and even mention of is to be condemned. I have no other explanation than that of John 10:10, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”

Thankfully Jesus continues to say, “I have come that they may have life, (He’s a Giver by nature, not a destroyer) and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Even in an abnormal world Life is still possible.

    Robert Greggery.

  21. >But we all know that the homosexual hate squad is expert at >bullying, intimidation and stand-over tactics.

Such vitriol repeatedly directed against homosexuals is almost invariably indicative of repressed homosexuality on the part of its instigator. Bill, how about stepping out of that closet and getting yourself some fresh air?

  22. Thanks Todd. Such vitriol repeatedly directed against Christians is almost invariably indicative of repressed Christianity on the part of its instigator. Todd, how about stepping out of that closet and getting yourself some fresh air?

Actually you must be a Christian, since I find it hard to believe that any homosexual activist would publicly embarrass himself with such a moronic claim. You might as well argue that those who stand against rape are actually rapists, or those who speak against pollution are in fact polluters. No wonder no one takes your side seriously with such imbecility.

  23. Hi Bill, Things don’t change, those who are ignorant of the truth always prefer to stay ignorant rather than educate themselves to learn and grow in knowledge of the truth; they will also constantly spew hate at those who share the truth because the truth shines a light onto their ignorance and nobody likes to think they are ignorant. Cory shined the light of truth, you shine the light of truth, onto the ignorance of the secular left and their cohorts and so they spew forth their hatred just as the Pharisees did to Jesus; both of you stand in the company of Christianities great heroes and follow the footsteps of our LORD. I thank GOD for your, and Cory’s, example to the rest of us and pray for you, and those like you, to receive a full measure of His strength to sustain you in these trying times. May GOD continue to bless you Bill.

  24. I actually think the attack on his book is uncoordinated even people who hate Hitler, rate Mien Kampf 5 star for an insight into what makes him tick.

The Most helpful review on Amazon at the moment is one that someone who claims not to have read it and compares the content with Kleenex. If you have read something it may be worth describing the book as soft and absorbent if it is bad but even the most evil books can provide an insight in how the author thinks. Serious critics of Charles Darwin have read the Origin of the Species.

If I were on their side, I would like to think that I would challenge people to read and study the tactics of the enemy. A smart enemy is hard to beat. The tactics against Cory Bernardi that are on display are like the Russian army sending waves and waves of unthinking conscripts to take out the Germans in Stalingrad.

What the critics don’t realise is that they may be participating in the social equivalent of Natural Selection. One day Jews and Christians might be so skilled at political manoeuvre so used to fighting at odds that are certain doom they might take over the world.

I am going to buy the book when I have a chance. The quality of your review compared to the most helpfulcritic on Amazon is like comparing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata with the symphony of neighbourhood cats in F Major. I hope that if I write a book of this nature, I get reviews against me of such poor quality as the attack on Bernardi.

  25. Thanks for your insightful article.

As soon as I saw ABC news about Cory, I emailed CDP and Liberal Party asking them to support Cory. CDP gave me link to your website, but Liberals haven’t responded.

Christians and world need to understand that modern feminism (as VERY distinct from original women’s liberation) is merely re-incarnation of Asherah, Ashtoreth, Athena & Venus goddess cults. There is no ‘Christian’ feminism. God created them, male and female. In His image he created them…BOTH! It’s time for Australia to end the gender wars, and it starts with God’s people.

  26. Having actually read Cory Bernardi’s book on conservatism found it resonated with me, get a copy from your local library, read it, make up your own mind as to its validity. also note Cory being married to the same woman 20 years, most likely is a better track record than many of his critics, he looks up to Donald Trump then he been present in the US to see first hand how he operates. Like Winston Churchill our Australian conservative may be a voice crying alone in the wilderness but over time become defender of the nation as was Winston Churchill, not bad Obama had bust of Winston Churchill removed from its place of honour in the white house, hope Donald Trump reinstates it.
