“Hate” Crimes, Double Standards, and the Death of the West

As has been often said, if it weren’t for double standards, most folks on the left would have no standards at all. In the West this duplicity and hypocrisy from the left is ever on display. Countless examples of it can be found, and sites like this are full of examples of such double standards.

While this is found in whatever the left says and does, we especially see it come to the fore when it comes to things like homosexuality and Islam. Just yesterday I looked at a case involving homosexuality and related matters: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2018/06/25/sanders-discrimination-and-leftist-double-standards/

Today we must look at the issue of Islam, and the way too many of our Western leaders, elites, politicians and journalists apply blatant and ugly double standards. Consider the issue of “hate crimes”. These are quite unnecessary, and are politically motivated laws which help no one – except special interest groups, such as Muslims and homosexuals.

They are dangerous and absurd for so many reasons. And they seem so redundant. Most crimes are not committed with love as the motivation. If I steal from a person, I really do not love them – I in fact hate them. The same if I lie about another person, or seek to harm another person, and so on.

Over a decade ago I sought to make the case for why we should be very concerned about hate crimes. See here:

And see here as well: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2012/08/16/hate-crimes-and-lefty-double-standards/

But we find reckless charges of hate crimes being thrown around all the time whenever anyone seems to say or do anything critical of Islam. Yet if a Muslim does the same sorts of things, they invariably receive no punishment – or at best a slap on the wrist.

Consider these two recent cases as a clear example of these gross double standards. Take first a case of how leaving a bit of bacon around can get you into all sorts of trouble. A Minnesota news article describes the event:

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, also known as CAIR, is calling on authorities to investigate an incident as a possible hate crime. Officials with the Masjid AbuBakr Al-Seddiq Mosque found bacon by the front door and in the parking lot of the mosque. The pork product is known to be disrespectful to the Muslim religion, since the Quran prohibits Muslims from eating pork.

“As with a number of similar attempted acts of religious desecration nationwide, the use of pork products to target an Islamic institution is a clear indicator of a bias motive and should be investigated as a possible hate crime,” Jaylani Hussein, CAIR-MN executive director, said…

The Minnesota chapter of CAIR called on local, state, and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate this incident. In response to this incident, there will be a Sunrise Solidarity Vigil for the Rochester Muslim Community. It’s being held outside the mosque, located at 17 North Broadway Avenue, at 6:30 a.m. on Sun., June 24.

As Robert Spencer says concerning this incident:

Was there ever a Sunrise Solidarity Vigil held for the hundreds of thousands of Christians who were killed, driven from their homes, enslaved, subjugated, or persecuted in other ways by Islamic jihadis? When one considers the scope and magnitude of the Muslim persecution of Christians and other non-Muslims in recent years, a few strips of bacon left at a mosque seem rather trivial. A rude gesture, to be sure. The people who did this, if they are non-Muslims, are louts, and if they are Muslims, they’re victimhood-claiming liars, as we have seen so many times in the past. But is this an offense calling for a hate crime investigation and a vigil? Be serious.

Of course this has not been the first time such an incident has been labelled a “hate crime,” often resulting in harsh penalties. As but one more case of this, a man in the UK was imprisoned for a whole year for leaving bacon sandwiches outside of a mosque.

While no Muslim has died as a result of his actions – at least as far as I am aware of – sadly this man has just died in prison while serving his term: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4075328/Man-jailed-leaving-bacon-sandwiched-outside-mosque-dead-prison-half-way-12-month-sentence.html

My second case looks at what does indeed seem quite hateful, but absolutely nothing was done about it. This time it was a Muslim shouting vile and hateful abuse at others, but this was deemed to not be a hate crime – indeed, it was not deemed to be anything of consequence.

Here is how one news item covers the story:

A Muslim businessman who reduced airline passengers to tears with anti-Semitic insults has walked free from court after he blamed his racist remarks on smoking cannabis during Ramadan. Company director Shamraize Bashir, 34, was travelling back to the UK from Israel with friends when he launched a foul-mouthed five minute rant. He was heard to say: ‘You know the really fat Jewish women yeah? Their job is to let their husbands f*** them and make babies for them.’

Fellow passengers on the easyJet flight from Tel Aviv urged Bashir to stop swearing, but he responded: ‘I’m not f***ing swearing – you can’t tell me what to do, even my own mum doesn’t tell me what to do.’ One tearful woman was so offended during Bashir’s outburst that she swapped seats with another passenger.

Hmm. Once more, Robert Spencer offers a bit of sense on all this, highlighting the obvious double standards once again on display here:

Shamraize Bashir doesn’t seem to have done anything besides spew insults, but apparently he ran afoul of the UK’s laws against “racism.” Nonetheless, he walked free. If the roles had been reversed and he had been a non-Muslim insulting Muslims on an airplane, would he have walked free in today’s shattered, staggering, dhimmi Britain? What do you think?

But far worse has been done by Muslims, only to be tut-tutted by leftist judges who seem to think Muslims can do no wrong. We have even had a number of rapes and sexual assault cases committed by Muslims in the West simply dismissed as ‘cultural misunderstanding’ and the like.

One earlier case demonstrates the blatant evil of all this:

An 18-year-old man in the U.K. who raped a 13-year-old girl was spared a prison sentence by Nottingham Crown Court after he claimed that his Muslim upbringing did not teach him to respect women. “Although chronologically 18, it is quite clear from the reports that you are very naive and immature when it comes to sexual matters,” Judge Michael Stokes said when handing Adil Rashid a suspended sentence.

These kinds of stories are never-ending it seems: any criticism of Islam – no matter how harmless or innocuous – is deemed to be a despicable hate crime and meriting the stiffest of penalties. But when a Muslim in the West does some rather obvious hateful things, he often just receives a get-out-of-jail-free card.

This my friends is what is known as diabolical double standards. And this is how the West will perish.

  1. I have to disagree with you on your opening point Bill. Not double standards but an infinite number of standards- such is the world of moral relativism. If each person is the author of their own standard without reference to an objective notice referent, there are as many potential standards as there are people. Its been the case since Eve was convinced to have a munch on the apple. Reject God and his standard and you fall for anything.

  2. Thanks Bill. I recently read a news report on Kevin Crehan who died in prison for the “bacon buttie” crime. It didn’t make clear whether he was murdered or committed suicide as there was a mention of pills. Anyway, whatever the outcome it was harsh and the sentence was the means to his death. The Muslim airplane anti-semitic hooligan strikes me an an arrogant, entitled, spoilt human being who when one (or cannabis) scratches the surface spews out his innate brainwashed hatred of Jews and women. Pity his future wife. I notice that he was able to fly in and out of Israel because Israel does not ban him and is a sane a just country. This man does not have any respect for his own political ideology of Islam as he was smoking cannabis during his own Ramadan f(e)ast, much less anybody else’s. He was probably given community service and a fine so that he could continue to run his business. Not the kind of consideration as you say given to non-Muslims. Never mind. The UK public is onto this double standard now and it is likely that if the Crown fsils to punish, or punish appropriately there will be an increase in the number of private prosecutions brought against people like this.
