America, Trump and Abortion

Unprecedented prolife activities in the US:

Three things happened this week that have never happened before in the US. One, the Trump Administration issued an official prolife proclamation. Two, Trump attended the annual March for Life – the first time ever that a sitting President did such a thing. Three, he gave a stirring prolife speech at the march.

For those not in the know, there is significant historical background to all this. On January 22, 1973 the US Supreme Court, in a 7–2 decision, declared that there is a Constitutional right to abortion. It struck down the laws of all 50 American states, and basically gave the US abortion on demand.

Each year since then a prolife rally has been held in the nation’s capital in cold wintry conditions to stand up for life. Now, 47 years on, we have these historic events taking place with President Trump. And be aware of what has been happening here. Since that fateful decision, some 62 million babies have been killed in the US alone. https://nrlc.org/uploads/factsheets/FS01AbortionintheUS.pdf

One meme making the rounds recently puts it like this: “If you’re under 47, you are an abortion holocaust survivor, and one third of your generation did not survive.” Thankfully over recent years abortion rates have been dropping, but the mother’s womb in America is still one of the most dangerous places to be in.

But let me speak to what has just occurred over the past few days. While Presidents like Obama were quite happy to attend functions by pro-death groups like Planned Parenthood and sing their praises, this is the first time a sitting Commander in Chief attended the annual prolife event.

The “Proclamation on National Sanctity of Human Life Day, 2020” was issued on January 21. It says this in part:

Every person — the born and unborn, the poor, the downcast, the disabled, the infirm, and the elderly — has inherent value. Although each journey is different, no life is without worth or is inconsequential; the rights of all people must be defended. On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, our Nation proudly and strongly reaffirms our commitment to protect the precious gift of life at every stage, from conception to natural death…

My Administration is also building an international coalition to dispel the concept of abortion as a fundamental human right. So far, 24 nations representing more than a billion people have joined this important cause. We oppose any projects that attempt to assert a global right to taxpayer-funded abortion on demand, up to the moment of delivery. And we will never tire of defending innocent life — at home or abroad.

As a Nation, we must remain steadfastly dedicated to the profound truth that all life is a gift from God, who endows every person with immeasurable worth and potential. Countless Americans are tireless defenders of life and champions for the vulnerable among us. We are grateful for those who support women experiencing unexpected pregnancies, those who provide healing to women who have had abortions, and those who welcome children into their homes through foster care and adoption. On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, we celebrate the wonderful gift of life and renew our resolve to build a culture where life is always revered.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 22, 2020, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. Today, I call on the Congress to join me in protecting and defending the dignity of every human life, including those not yet born. I call on the American people to continue to care for women in unexpected pregnancies and to support adoption and foster care in a more meaningful way, so every child can have a loving home. And finally, I ask every citizen of this great Nation to listen to the sound of silence caused by a generation lost to us, and then to raise their voices for all affected by abortion, both seen and unseen. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation-national-sanctity-human-life-day-2020/

And here are parts of the speech he just delivered at the March for Life in Washington:

It is my profound honor to be the first president in history to attend the March for Life. [applause] We are here for a very simple reason: to defend the right of every child, born and unborn, to fulfill their God-given potential. [applause] For 47 years, Americans of all backgrounds have traveled from across the country to stand for life. And today as President of the United States, I am truly proud to stand with you. [applause]…

The life movement is led by strong women, amazing faith leaders, and brave students who carry on the legacy of pioneers before us who fought to raise the conscience of our nation and uphold the rights of our citizens. You embrace mothers with care and compassion. You are empowered by prayer and motivated by your unselfish love. You are grateful and we are so grateful – these are incredible people – to be joined by Secretary Alex Azar and Kellyanne Conway. [applause]…

As the Bible tells us, each person is wonderfully made. [applause]

We have taken decisive action to protect the religious liberty – so important – religious liberty has been under attack all over the world and frankly, very strongly attacked in our nation. You see it better than anyone. But we are stopping it. And we’re taking care of doctors, nurses, teachers, and groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor. [applause]

We are preserving faith-based adoption and to uphold our founding documents, we have appointed 187 federal judges, who apply the constitution as written, including two phenomenal supreme court justices – Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. [applause]

We are protecting pro-life students’ rights to free speech on college campuses. And if universities want federal taxpayer dollars, then they must uphold your First Amendment right to speak your mind. And if they don’t, they pay a very big financial penalty, which they will not be willing to pay. [applause]

Sadly, the far left is working to erase our God-given rights, shut down faith-based charities, ban religious leaders from the public square, and silence Americans who believe in the sanctity of life. They are coming after me because I am fighting for you and we are fighting for those who have no voice. And we will win because we know how to win. [applause] We all know how to win. We all know how to win. You’ve been winning for a long time. You’ve been winning for a long time.

Together, we are the voice for the voiceless. When it comes to abortion – and you know this, you’ve seen what’s happened – Democrats have embraced the most radical and extreme positions taken and seen in this country for years and decades, and you can even say, for centuries….

And to all the moms here today, we celebrate you and we declare that mothers are heroes. [applause] Your strength, devotion, and drive is what powers our nation. Because of you, our country has been blessed with amazing souls who have changed the course of human history.

We cannot know what our citizens yet unborn will achieve. The dreams they will imagine. The masterpieces they will create. The discoveries they will make. But we know this: every life brings love into this world. Every child brings joy to a family. Every person is worth protecting.

And above all, we know that every human soul is divine and every human life, born and unborn, is made in the holy image of Almighty God. [applause]

Together, we will defend this truth all across our magnificent land. We will set free the dreams of our people. And with determined hope, we look forward to all of the blessings that will come from the beauty, talent, purpose, nobility, and grace of every American child.

I want to thank you. This is a very special moment. It’s so great to represent you. I love you all. [applause] And I say with a true passion, thank you, God bless you, and God bless America. Thank you all. Thank you. [applause] https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/full-text-trumps-2020-march-for-life-speech

Wow. This week has been extraordinary indeed. Please keep praying for America and for President Trump.

  1. Thank You, Lord, for President Trump’s leadership honouring You. Guide him, strengthen him, bless and protect him, we pray.
And thank you Bill for this wonderful post!

  2. Wow and wow again, What a man. Not only that he stands for prolife but that he is out in the open with a large price on his head. Go for it President Trump. More of it and now stop the trade in children for the sexual perverts. Bless him and his team

  3. Thank Bill. I think this will go down as one of his most important speeches.
It is also a call for a kind, deliberate response. And all based upon babies (and so adults) being created in the Image of God, as taught by Scripture.

I hope South Australians take heart and make a noise, – our legislators are on the verge of going in the opposite, evil way, of making abortion legal up until birth. Lord have mercy.

  4. Thank you Bill! And Thank the Lord for President Trump!
Amazing isn’t it? Nancy Pelosi trots out her Catholic Faith, talks about “Not hating anyone!”
SHE IS A GREAT SUPPORTER OF ABORTION, RIGHT UP TO THE DAY OF BIRTH! She obviously HATES tiny, defenseless babies.
    Jennifer Irvine.

  5. What a dramatic contrast: this article today on this website, versus several articles today on Australia’s ABC News website. The ABC News articles without exception convey an impression of an Evil President, so evil in fact that he’s on the verge of being sacked. But thanks to this site we read of a President standing for Good, times three. Thank you Bill for at the very least conveying this news to your readers–I doubt I would have heard of this otherwise.

  6. We watched the live stream on Catholic TV here in America. I’m sure there are many who will say that he only did it to win the Christian vote… but, as a one issue voter, this makes the difference for me. For those who think President Trump is of questionable or even malicious character I’d say – even a bad person can make a good moral choice. As for us, we are grateful and supportive for this man who is leading us back to Constitutional America, which is based upon the Judeo-Christian values of our Founding Fathers.

  7. Thank you Bill for sharing this. I couldn’t help but weep with gratitude and thank Heavenly Father for the truth spoken through President Trump.

  8. Your’e a hero too Bill for publishing the text of president Trumps address at the pro-life rally. None of the MSM will publish this whole, only snippets which they can use to ridicule.
It really was a great day is US history.
    Bill Heggers

  9. As an immigrant, a woman of color, and an abortion survivor, I praise God for President Trump. I voted for him because of his pro-life stance, and he has been true to his word. But now we need to pray all the more for his safety and that of his family.

  10. Trump’s speech is as significant as that of the famous Martin Luther King Jr back in the 60s. Excellent.

  11. Once again I’m blown away by how the Lord is using President Trump. We truly are witnessing an historical event turning Roe vs. Wade around and bringing our Nations back to God and His forgiveness for this worst slaughter in the history of man kind. This gives me so much hope for the future.

Thanks Bill for another excellent article and forwarding this on to us.

  12. It’s interesting how both Job and the prophet Jeremiah cursed the day of their birth. I realise by reading the respective books they endured unimaginable sufferings, but despite all the difficulties and sufferings of life, I could not bring myself to cursing the day of my birth, being the greatest of all days and knowing that babies are being ripped to shreds in the womb.

At the upcoming blasphemous “Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras”, which will be broadcast on the GayBC, the sons and daughters of Sodom and Gomorrah will be ridiculing this giant of a president, which the GayBC will most gleefully broadcast. God’s curses and a pox on them and the GayBC!!

  13. Great article Bill, this is one of the reasons I pray for President Trump every day. I would encourage all of your supporters to do the same. Blessings, Kel.

  14. Bill,
Whether we have liked it or not Mr president Donald Trump will fulfill the mandate of the blue print of Jesus.

Isaiah 45. Timothy said in Hebrew that He whom comets to God must approach Him as knowing that He is: Hebrew 11.6

God will reveal Himself to Usward in these last days on earth because He is God.
    Amen.

  15. Wouldn’t Ted Cruz or Mario Rubio also have been pro-life presidents as well, surely? And might I point out that the Governor of Louisiana is a pro-life Democrat? And that Secular Pro-Life, the Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians and Feminists for Life regularly participate in the March for Life these days? It isn’t just President Trump that is behind the momentum building behind the pro-life cause there now. It has been forty seven years since Roe v Wade and the US pro-life movement is broad and diverse. I might also point out that one of the new candidates for British Labour leader wants an end to disability discrimination abortions.

  16. Thanks again Rhona. Based on this and all your other comments, it appears that you really do like to be a contrarian, don’t you! Some folks love to argue because they get cheap thrills out of it. Some love to argue because they are trolls. Some love to argue because they are ideologues. Given that you recently fessed up to being “a true red socialist lass” I guess that basically explains things!

But let me reply if I may. Yes, Cruz and Rubio are prolife – I never said they were not! But they are not the president right now! And yes there are a small handful of prolife Dems – I never said there were none! And yes, as I have documented in my abortion book, there are a handful of secular prolife groups – I never said there were none! Most of the early feminists were prolife, unlike most of today’s feminists. And where did I say that only Trump was behind this? Of course the movement is ‘broad and diverse’. When did I say it was not? And yes there may be one or two prolife Labor candidates. When did I say there were none?

You may at one point want to move beyond all the red herrings, straw men, and non-sequiturs! Logical fallacies do not an argument make! Why am I reminded of the humorous meme making the rounds based on the infamous encounter between Jordan Peterson and leftist English journalist Cathy Newman two years ago? It was such a rip snorter that I did an entire piece on it at the time: https://billmuehlenberg.com/2018/01/24/peterson-contra-mundum/

Anyway, the meme goes like this:

JP: I like dogs as pets.
CN: So what you’re saying is, cat people shouldn’t be allowed to breed.
JP: No, I like cats as pets too.
CN: So what you’re saying is, you’re back-peddling on your previous position.
JP: Ma’am, do you know what a non sequitur is?
CN: So what you’re saying is, everybody should just speak Latin.

OK, enough of the humour. However, one thing always intrigues me when you come to this site: the mental gymnastics you must have to go through to simultaneously love secular left socialism and love the prolife position. The two really are rather incompatible. Generally speaking – with some exceptions – secular left socialism is pro-death. Generally speaking – with some exceptions – conservatives and Christians are prolife.

Socialists love to drone on about generic concepts such as Humanity, while they have a very poor track record when it comes to actual human beings. Conservatives and Christians have no time for vague abstractions about Humanity, and instead actually care for individual humans. Conservatives and Christians have mainly been the ones to march in the prolife rallies, to set up hospitals, to engage in prison reform, to helped raise the status of women and children, etc. One finds very few secular left socialists doing any of this.

Indeed, except for the political ideology of Islam, socialism has been responsible for the deaths of more human beings than any other ideology. Being so passionately devoted to it is hardly a way to demonstrate one’s prolife bona fides! So maybe one day as you reflect on all this you might come to see that if you really are prolife, having a slavish devotion to secular left socialism is not quite the way to go – at least not if you want to have some sort intellectual consistency! But as always, thanks again for your thoughts. Until next time!

  17. Thank you for this: it’s uplifting and surprisingly Christian coming from a US President.

I wanted to inform you and other that some Christian never-Trumpers are out there with their head in the sand. The following is cut and pasted from a compilation made by Dave Armstrong. These guys are nuts.

The March for Life and the “Old” Pro-Life Movement are Dead / R.I.P.

    ++++++++++++++

Didja know that? Were you under the mistaken impression that both were thriving?

So sez Proud Mary Pezzulo, in her latest masterpiece of “o woe is me (and us)” liberal pessimism and naysaying, entitled “A Eulogy for the March for Life” (1-24-20)

    ***

In other “pro-life Patheos” news, Stephen G. Adubato, in his piece, “Trump Marches, Catholics Sell Out” (1-25-20) pontificates:

“I applaud the efforts of crisis pregnancy centers, pro-life health clinics, and communities like the Sisters of Life who actually work face to face with these women. And it became clear to me today that the mainstream pro-life moment is less interested in these concrete gestures of solidarity, and is more interested in promoting itself as a political-ideological agenda.”

Not to be outdone, Mark Shea opined on 1-22-20:

So now we live in a regime that cynically uses prolife rhetoric, not to save unborn lives, but to brainwash a demographic that used to be prolife into being fanatically supportive of every GOP initiative to rob, harm, neglect, torment, and kill whatever victim group the Cult of Trump designates as the enemy. The MAGA “prolife” movement are the docile cheerleaders of Yemeni genocide, murdering journalists, kidnapping children, sadistic deportation policies, taking food out of the mouths of hungry kids, sexual assault of refugees by ICE (and by Trump), murdering refugees by thirst, and any other lie, crime, or evil Trump commits. Like a zombie, the MAGA “prolifer” chants “But abortion” as their justification for it all, brandishing their Precious Feet pin as their talisman that taketh away all their sins which now are the real focus of their time and energy. Spitefully making lib snowflakes cry, not saving the unborn, is now the real purpose of the MAGA “prolifer”.

    ***

Lastly, Rebecca Hamilton, now trying to out-Shea Mark Shea (no easy task!), wrote on 1-22-20:

I wish President Trump really was the man his blind followers think he is. But he is not. He’s a monster. And the messiah they think they see is someone they have made up in their own minds.

I don’t have a specific tactic in mind for overturning Roe except to wait and see what the Court does with the law they are set to review. When they rule, then we can formulate tactics for going forward. However, any tactic we devise cannot ask people to support evils such as rape, misogyny or the destruction of America. Satan cannot cast out satan.

This is our house. I won’t be part of burning it down.

    ****

    Patheos Catholic writers all . . .

With friends of the pro-life cause like these, who needs enemies?

  18. No, Bill, I favour a broad based strategically realistic pro-life movement. Look at the New South Wales abortion debate- the prime mover was New South Wales Liberal Premier Gladys Berejikian and she had the support of much of the Liberal/National Coalition state parliamentary caucus behind her. Granted, there were a few courageous pro-life holdouts within the Coalition and also a significant proportion within the Australian Labor Party.

In backing Trump. I fear that some conservative pro-lifers are giving him a blank cheque on other issues and that’s dangerous. I applaud his decision to speak at the March for Life certainly, but I have some major questions about his refugee and border control policies. As a faithful Catholic, many of them are members of my own specific Christian denomination. Added to which, the “American Way” of doing things may be limited primarily to the United States and only applicable to that historical and political context. In the British Commonwealth, it may be a better idea to hedge one’s bets and insure the presence of pro-life contingents within all of the major political parties. That is what has been the case in the United Kingdom for the last fifty three years since the Abortion Act 1967. Unfortunately, here in New Zealand, we are witnessing the results of blindly following political strategies with no reference to political realities. With the exception of Family Life International, most of the local pro-life movement have been rabidly anti-Labour and making it difficult to mount an effective campaign within that party as a result. I fear for the right to life of the unborn as a result of this foolhardiness.

  19. I would also point out that in Louisiana, pro-life Democrat Governor John Bel Edwards is a strong supporter of that state’s attempt to overturn Roe v Wade. And don’t forget, if it hadn’t been for pro-life Pennsylvania Democrat Governor Robert Casey in the nineties, there would be none of the momentum to overturn the injustice of Roe v Wade in the first place. As you can see, pro-life Democrats have played an important and instrumental role in overturning the abortion nightmare in the United States.

  20. Thanks again Rhona, but if I may, let me once more try to bring some clarity here. Sadly I have to again deal with your non sequiturs and straw men. To highlight the obvious truth that socialist left parties overwhelmingly are pro-abortion, and often have abortion on demand as part of their official party platforms, while most conservative parties do not, is not to say that we cannot be thankful for and support the few leftist politicians who are prolife. I never said we should not seek to work with prolifers from other parties and political ideologies. I never said they do not exist. I simply said they are very few and far between. And I happen to know most of the few prolife Labor politicians here in Australia and they are aware of my support of them – at least on these issues.

But that does NOT negate the truth which you keep refusing to believe: as a whole, leftist parties are NOT parties of life. While conservative parties will sadly include some members who are not prolife, these parties usually do not have the same official ideological pro-death positions that most leftist parties do – which is exactly why so few prolife groups would even consider throwing their support behind them. Pretending that there is some sort of moral equivalence here when there clearly is not helps absolutely no one. Indeed, ideology simply blinds people to reality.

And desperately trying to find even one or two prolife Democrats when there are hundreds of prolife Republicans around shows us all just how utterly desperate you are Rhona, and how bankrupt your slavish commitment to leftism and socialism is – at least if you claim to care about the unborn. Exceptions do NOT make the rule: the Democratic Party is a fully committed and dedicated pro-death party, just as almost all socialist left parties are.

Sadly you are simply deluding yourself to think your commitment to leftism is somehow fully compatible with being prolife. Instead of straining at the gnat and swallowing camels, why don’t you just finally admit it: most of your beloved socialist left parties care very little for the unborn. You are simply on the wrong side of history here – and of reality. If you really want to help babies, you should seriously consider abandoning your rather bizarre love affair with secular socialist left politics and ideology.

  21. Absolutely extraordinary! What an amazing speech, what an amazing President. There remains hope for those who seek the truth, for those who work tirelessly to protect life. The moral dichotomy appears to be more prevalent since he took office, from those who love life to those who do not. Thank you Bill for sharing.

  22. Who would have thought that President Trump would be such a strong advocate for life. Indeed, a great moment in history.

  23. Praise God! Absolutely amazing.

I posted the speech on Facebook and immediately had Christians trot out the usual Trump bashing: how he doesn’t mean it, he only wants the evangelical vote, he’s a hypocrite etc. Yawn.

Not a single one could acknowledge anything good about this event. I did the whole, ‘even if what you say is true, isn’t it still great that the prolife cause is being backed by the highest office in America?’ No go. And of course I was a terrible person for supporting what went down.

Then I tried the ‘if he’s not converted, isn’t it great that he’s being exposed to scripture and faithful believers? Shouldn’t we pray for him?’. No go there either.

I really don’t get the Trump derangement syndrome amongst evangelical Christians. Even the fact that the voiceless are getting a Presidential voice means nothing if that President is Trump.

  24. As a former Non-Trump (never said never) detractor, I have posted an apology. I was wrong. US Politics are ALL about performance not personalities. Based on his earlier resume, I suspected Trump to be a conservative-campaigner and a liberal-officeholder. I was wrong!
He has kept more of his promises than almost any politician I can remember. I do not give him blank-check support. I will continue to do my job as a citizen and monitor his actions. But as of now I am delighted to acknowledge my earlier error. I was wrong.
He deserves support and appreciation from every person who identifies as pro-life and pro-Christian Liberty.
Your post as usual is spot-on! Thank you!

  25. Well said Donald Trump and Bill for filling in the detail. It’s good to hear a national leader speak up about this chilling subject of abortion, going against the accepted narrative even while the Democrats are trying to take him down with impeachment. It’s not all about the woman’s right to choose. Once a woman is pregnant she is 1 factor of 3 of the process of creating new human life. If one’s heart is so hardened that one can accept abortion at the point of birth, as promoted by Hillary Clinton, then choosing not to give birth should be resolved upon before conception. For all we know, the abortion mills could be part of the United Nations population reduction and sustainability agenda, which would make a woman who does not protect her baby what Lenin described as a “useful idiot”

  26. We watched President Trump making his wonderful speech at the PRO-LIFE Rally.
How blessed you are to have this President, standing for Life, Liberty and America.
Indeed, many women are “useful idiots!” These SAME women go on about “Women’s rights.”
They give NO RIGHTS, to the millions of “little women” murdered in the womb.
The hypocrisy of the left knows no bounds!
    Jennifer, South Australia.

  27. Thank you Bill, standing up for reporting and supporting truth. Such a wonderful, timely speech with deep ramifications for every nation. If only, if only the past could be brought back for the defenseless, the very ones we as Christians should be defending: the orphans. Surely the ones aborted are also the orphans, the cast aside and abandoned of humanity we are supposed to defend and President Trump is doing this, defending the defenseless, we as Christians should be defending.

The ‘pro-choice’ proponents are saying, by their proposal, we are not human when or while we are in the womb.

When are we human? The truth is when we have the same number of pieces of information in our DNA as every other human being ie: 3 billion pieces of information in the human genome/DNA for every one of us. If we took a sample of DNA of the developing human being in the womb, from the very earliest stage, we would find the same number of pieces of information in the genome/DNA : 3 billion pieces of infomation = a developing human being. Once born, the human being continues to develop to completion, about 27 years old for a male and about 24 years old for a female. No question, the developing human being in the womb is definitely Human and should be defended.
