Our Naming and Shaming Corona Pharisees

It is time for the meddling moralisers to chill out:

I know I am not alone in getting rather sick and tired of all the corona alarmists and their incessant moralising, preaching and finger pointing. Sorry, but I will not bow down to your bullying, intimidation, and ugly naming and shaming. Indeed, I refuse to obey your newly established greatest commandment: “Thou shalt live in fear.”

I am fed up hearing all the time about how selfish I am because I think freedom is important. And that I am selfish because I think over-reactive government lockdowns are doing more harm than good. And how selfish I am because I have plenty of legitimate and unanswered questions about government tracing apps.

And I don’t care who is pushing this baloney, be it a politician, a journalist, or some arrogant celeb. I have already highlighted many of these sanctimonious folks and their patronising nonsense, such as Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt telling me this rubbish: “Want to go to the footy? Download the app.” Or faux conservative Paul Murray on Sky News telling us we must download it for the sake of Mother’s Day!

Um, no, I will not be bribed or blackmailed. I will not be treated like a child. I will not be spoken down to. I will not be treated like some low-life scum. I will not put up with your patronising and condescending assault on my freedom. So back off now, thanks.

Nor will I take it from smart aleck journalists who think they know so much better than I do what I should and should not do. There are far too many of these moralising media types out there. Let me mention just one (and I won’t dignify their fearmongering by providing a link to it).

Some know-it-all by the name of Angela Mollard had an opinion piece entitled “Coronavirus app: Why you should download COVIDSafe now”. It began this way: “If you are not willing to join millions of Aussies in downloading the government’s new coronavirus tracing app, you’re just plain selfish.”

Um, take a hike mate. I will tell you who is being selfish here: all these fat cat media meddlers and celebs and politicians who all enjoy very comfortable lifestyles with guaranteed pay cheques and heaps of money in the bank who keep lecturing us poor plebs that we just need to suck it up and do what we are told.

They are not worth listening to. And plenty of Christians are quite happy to take the high moral ground here as well, all the while revealing what utter Pharisees they are. One of the more appalling things I read from one of these folks was this:

To protesters of stay-at-home orders:
Find something worth protesting and learn self control for the sake of others. The leading fruit of the Spirit is self-control.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law”–Galatians 5:22-23.

I was strongly tempted to say this in reply:

To insensitive corona alarmists:
Find something worth whining about. 30 million Americans have lost their jobs. They have bills to pay and families to feed. Learn some Christian charity for those who are suffering so greatly now. Treating them with contempt is neither edifying nor godly. The leading fruit of the Spirit is love, especially for those who are in such hardship.
“Be careful, Jesus said to them. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”—Matthew 16:6.

But I thought that I should show him more grace than he was showing to all those unemployed people who are wondering how they will make ends meet, and how they will get food on the table for their loved ones. And what really irked me is the fact that this guy would have a cushy job at a Christian seminary in a very nice part of the country.

I do not doubt for a moment that he has a nice guaranteed income, and a very nice home in a very nice part of town. Yet he has the audacity to sit in judgment on those who are not as well off as he is, and pontificate about how they need to be more spiritual – like he is. Hmm, Jesus had a lot to say about the Pharisees.

While this guy happens to live in the Rockies (tough gig if you can get it), what I said a few weeks ago about all the egotistical and annoying celebs preaching to us about how ‘we are all in this together’ is worth repeating: “Yeah right – as if. I am getting really sick and tired of all these bozos claiming we are all in the same boat. Um, no: they of course are in their 20-room mansions, their yachts, and their villas on the beach. Their lockdown is a whole lot easier to handle than mine and yours!” https://billmuehlenberg.com/2020/04/11/corona-and-the-rule-of-law/

Last week an American commentator said something very relevant to this discussion which I readily shared. It is worth sharing again. Matt Walsh put it this way: “New rule. If you’re criticizing lockdown protestors, you have to preface your criticism by saying whether you still have an income. Because if you’re criticizing people for wanting their income back even as you still have an income, that’s important context for us to know.”

Quite so. If this smug professor wants to open up his home and let a few dozen unemployed fellow Americans into his home, or better yet, if he wants to sell his home and vehicles and give the proceeds to the new poor created by these austere government lockdowns, THEN he can start lecturing us about Christian morality and spirituality.

Until then I suggest that he just zips it. He is helping no one by taking the high moral ground here. He is just making things worse, and giving biblical Christianity a real bad name along the way. But I am not picking on just this guy, as there are many thousands of other self-righteous Christians just like him doing the same thing, and saying the same nonsense.

Here is the bottom line: if these folks want to stay paralysed in fear, lock themselves in their (often quite comfortable) homes, never go out, and do everything the State tells them to do, that is up to them. But they really should stop lecturing me and millions of others about the choices we think are the best to make for ourselves during this time of crisis.

Postscript

While I am at it, let me share one more issue that gets my goat. Another thing that bugs me is this: the media going on and on about how the corona death toll keeps rising. Um, guess what? It cannot UNrise – it cannot go backwards. It can only go in one direction. So even if we get a handful of deaths a week, yes, it will rise! Duh. Let me repeat the actual numbers: Australia has 25.5 million people. 95 have died from corona so far. Um, in the same period 5000 Australians have died from cigarette smoking.

  1. Thanks Bill. Keep plugging the line. Did you see Martin Isles’ recent video? At the beginning he gives a far better analysis of the functions of the app than I’ve seen anywhere. If the government had spelled it out so clearly I’m sure there would be a greater uptake.

    Cheers,
    Bill

  2. Sorry they’re getting up your nose, Bill. I can understand why you are the butt of their criticism. The problem is you tell the truth and they don’t want it known. However, there are millions out here who depend on your words and take great heart from them, even if we don’t always say it.
May God keep giving you faith and courage.

  3. Many in the US stand with you. I’m 69 and not afraid because I know who holds my future and it’s not the mamby pamby government. I don’t take vaccines of any kind, I will not shelter in place and I will not wear a mask.

    God bless,
    Vicki

  4. Thank you Bill for refusing to bow down to fear and being so open and honest.

  5. I’m amazed at the lack pf logic in the developer of this app. The most at risk group of people are the elderly. I have a ninety -two yo acquaintance – extremely independent, living alone, the type who would benefit form such an app, surely? Only problem is, she doesn’t own a mobile phone, never has and never will (stupid contraptions she call them). Not being able to drive, she normally takes the bus to the shops and outings weekly. Public transport, more likely place to contract COVID. And I believe there would be many like that around. Question is- do the powers that be know this and couldn’t care less?

  6. These shamers, these snitchers, I do wonder what God has up His sleeve for them. We have em by the bucketload in Britain too….wagging their fingers at us, do-gooders for the State, they’d have not been out of place in the Nazi movement. In fact, in conjunction with the mainstream media, they’ve been so successful that it is said the majority of British are too scared to return to work. Fear. All running on fear. But the light is beginning to dawn, I believe.

  7. Bill, Your tone is pretty sharp this time. It reminds me a little of the tone Jesus might have used in clearing the temple of mercenaries!
There comes a time when truth needs to be proclaimed in a voice that cuts through the slushy, murky communications being sent from the Ivory Towered elite. You are on target! Godspeed!

  8. Absolutely love this article. Again you’ve put the bad guys in their place & exposed their hypocrisy.

  9. Isn’t it funny how many hypocrites occupy the “moral high ground”??? Pharisees indeed! Far too many of them in the West today and far too many clueless sheep following them. Tickle our ears and tell us only positive things. Shame those who speak negative things for God only desires us to be happy.

  10. Paul, writing in prison a letter to the church of Philippi (Philippians 1:27-30) points Christians toward what we need to remember during these perilous times… especially verse 28

27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,
28 **and (be) not frightened in anything by your opponents (government, authorities, snitches, etc.). This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.**
29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,
30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

  11. Thank you again Bill, so poignant to the issue of lock-down. It seems that the loudest pro stay-at-homers are the ones living in their ivory comforts. Knowing your pay cheque will continue through this and at the end certainly has blinded many folks. While the coronavirus is serious, and any death is unavoidably tragic, many other deaths are continuing without much though to report. For example, according to ‘the religion of peace’ website, so far in 2020, there have been 599 Islamic attacks, 3235 people killed and 2480 injured. Did you hear anything on ABC News about this…hmmm silence. These elites needs to shut up and leave the hoi polloi alone. Yes, we can wash our hands, practice social distancing and go back to work to put food on the table. don’t need an Ap to do this.

  12. Good on you Bill,
You’ve echoed my thoughts exactly. We no longer watch Paul Murray on Sky because we’re fed up with his constant bullying for people to “get the app”. We’ve also gone off Morrison and Greg Hunt for the same reason, as well as Hunt’s recent refusal to help kids being permanently damaged at transition clinics.

  13. Here we go again Bill,

Christians wake up we only need one App and that is the Jesus App!

First the environmental climate alarmists and now the insensitive corona alarmists!

Next time you read or hear their Pharisees utterances, you will find that they are fully employed and are not financially or even physically health wise affected, ALWAYS singing from the same song book!

    Cheers & blessings

  14. Hi Bill,
Thanks very much for your Christian stance on contemporary issues and your informative articles.
Have you done one on the Nursing Home scandals in New York.
It appears Governor Andrew Cuomo is purposefully allowing people likely to still have the virus to go to these homes – refusing to test them.
When isolation at the Javits convention centre or the USS Comfort was available.
Is this just bad policy or something more sinister?
    kind regards,
    Kyle

  15. Taiwan is an interesting case – similar population to Oz, minimal lockdown and 6 deaths.
I am not surprised at anything we do as fallen human beings, but this virus and peoples reaction to the scaremongering is fair dinkum ‘alarming’ – thankfully my roots and being belong in another kingdom, but this has been amazing to observe.

  16. Thanks Bill. Your voice is crucially important. People are afraid to speak one word of ‘dissent’ (truth) because there are a dozen or so so-called moralisers waiting on the sidelines to tell them that they need to shut up and sit down. That the government knows best at all times. All it takes is a few courageous people willing to speak out and others will follow.

  17. As at yesterday, the toll from the virus (IF we can believe the government figures) was still less than the road toll even allowing for the reduced traffic. And this applied in EVERY State and Territory of Australia.

According to this website and graph:
    https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert
the peak incidence of cases detected was in the last week of March, just about when the most restrictive regulations were put in place.

  18. I have heard and read from various sources that the Covid numbers are artificially rigged. From a friend in Germany whose mother died of a heart attack, but the death certificate came back as Covid-19. He went back to the doctor and said this is not correct, the did not have Covid and the doctor told him, sorry but we have to list all deaths as Covid-19 “by government pressure”.
The same is done in America, and I think in other countries as well, they are artificially padding the figures.

  19. john that is the way it is with a lot of government solutions the problem is fixing itself and then the government puts it’s solution in place and makes everything worse. Like the so called girl crisis of the 90’s here in the States the girls were catching up to the boys in grades till the solutions were implemented then while girls grades did good boys plummeted. now we have a boy crisis no-one wants to talk about because they are boys so who cares. They cry on and on about the patriarchy but it seems like women have all the power. sorry for the sidetrack.

Imagine what Hitler or Stalin or Mao would have done if any of them had this app??? another post a commenter mentioned deleting the app which could lead them to say they need a more terminate solution one you CAN’T remove! for your safety of course. and “for the children” since that phrase can disarm many a thinking person. (cue Mrs Lovejoy sound effect)

  20. Vic’s premier on moral high ground – “We are saving lives” – in his proclamation as to why he would not lift it one day earlier than he is ready, yet last year his government passed the law allowing abortions up to 30 weeks. Also, in USA, 94,000 abortions last year, so far 65,000 (supposed) virus deaths.

  21. I heard you speak on Vision Radio was so impressed with your honesty and Biblical based views, you put a whole new prospective on all important subjects which affect our Great Nation Australia.
    Thank you so much.

  22. Thank you I have been waiting for a notable Christian voice to word it with this much honesty and rhetorical force. This is what others have been thinking quietly but too scared to word this strongly. Thanks for not doing a 300 word qualification how you “believe in the virus …. … .. …” then get to the but. Thanks for stating the truth of the matter from the start to the finish.
